Star Trek Elite Force II (hx) 09:00 AM CEST - Jul,14 2003
Three years ago, Activision and Raven have released their first-person shooter based upon the Star Trek Voyager TV series. Now Activision and Ritual return with more Trek shooter action in Elite Force II that features a new in-depth storyline, scenarios and even more tweaked Quake 3 Engine. Was it worth the wait? Let's find out.
Star Trek Elite Force II once again puts players in the role of Hazard Team leader Alexander Munro. The game starts out during the events of Star Trek: Voyager's series finale, Endgame, with the U.S.S. Voyager being trapped inside a Borg Sphere. The Hazard Team's first mission in the game is to board the Sphere and find a way to free Voyager. After doing and returning to Earth, Munro is assigned to Starfleet Academy to train cadets.Through a series of events, Munro and the members of the Hazard Team find themselves transferred aboard the prestigious Enterprise-E serving under Picard. After answering a distress call of a derelict Federation vessel, the Enterprise-E and crew find themselves caught up in the upheaval of tension and conflict between warring species and find out who is behind it all. You will come across many familiar races in Star Trek including the Klingons, Borg, Andorians, and Romulans along with two new races and a horrific new alien race of monsters. Your actions will determine the ultimate outcome of these events.
The gameplay is definitely a lot of fun and extremely intense. There are 11 single-player missions over the course of the game, as well as some smaller scenarios scattered about, in total over 70 levels of gun blasting. There are a few puzzles (from simple pushing button to matching sine waves and rotating power couplings) spread out here and there to keep the game from the depths of a mindless shooter.
The weapons are great too, EF2 offers a a mixture of weapons from enhanced versions of Elite Force weapons to all-new weapons, including Hand-phaser (sometimes a life-saver if your ammo runs out), Compression Rifle (probably the best weapon in the game, along with the Tatryon Gun), Enhanced Compression Rifle (secondary mode which launches grenades), Assault Rifle, Sniper Rifle (isn't as accurate, but still somewhat effective), Grenade Launcher, Tatryon Gun (the Klingon-style chaingun), Energy Staff: of Romulan origin, Infinity Modulator (the only effective weapon against Borgs), Lightning Gun, Quantum Burst Torpedo (a.k.a. the rocket launcher), Radiation Gun (the second Romulan weapon, very similar to a flame-thrower) and Tricorders. The bosses were also a lot of fun playing, because all of them were challenging, but not the kind that frustrates. They are attacking in stages, so it's often like fighting four different enemies in one.
Only thing they could done better is the AI of team members. In other words, the NPC characters in Elite Force II are really dumb and annoying. For example, in Borg sphere, if you're leading the team round an alien environment, the members of the Hazard Team continually walk in front of you when you are shooting. Shame on them! ;)
The multiplayer portion of the game is pretty much the same as the first game (HoloMatch, Team HoloMatch and Capture the Flag), but the levels themselves are done better and with a little more variety. They've added Plasma Bomb Diffusal as a new game type. In this mode one side plants a bomb in the enemy's base. You'll then need to diffuse it before it detonates or successfully wait it out until the timer expires without the other team planting a bomb, depending on which side you're on. Nothing really ground breaking, but still breaks away from the norm. They've also added modifiers such as Control Points, Power Struggle, Auto Handicap, Weapon Score and One Flag. The multiplayer uses the excelent id Software networking code, so games are solid and lag-free. Needless to say that multiplayer in EF2 won't disappoint you.
Although EF2 is not innovative, it is a solid and entertaining game with a lot more variety than most FPS on the market. If you are Star Trek fan or just fan of shooters this is a must for your collection. Personally, I found this game to be a great addition to the unfortunately lacking lineup of Star Trek games. Download playable demo (118MB).
System requirements:
Minimum: Pentium III 600 or Athlon processor or higher, 128MB RAM, 3D Hardware Accelerator Card required - 100% DirectX 9.0 compatible 32MB video card and drivers*, Quad Speed CD-ROM, 1.3GB HDD space,
for multiplayer: Internet (TCP/IP) and LAN (TCP/IP) play supported, Internet play requires 56 Kbps (or faster) modem and drivers, LAN play requires network interface card and drivers
*Supported chipsets: All ATI Radeon, nVidiaR TNT2 and TNT2 Ultra, All nVidia GeForce chipsets , SIS Xabre 400
snd: 5/5 - wonderfully polished, excellent voice acting, great ambient background noise and weapons sounds, music fits right into the action, EAX3 support gfx: 3/5 -
highly tweaked Quake 3 engine, colorful characters, no ragdoll physics, low hardware requirements, try to set 1600x1200 with AA and anisotropic filtering, a little too much cinema playability: 4/5 -
pretty good, engaging plot, great atmosphere, lots of inside Star Trek jokes, some puzzle-solving sequences, 8~15 hours of game play (single-player), multiplayer still rocks!, linear single player, lame AI

..did these actors really voice for the video game?.. they the voice acting is really TOP !!!!
yeah the graphics are a bit dated and when shadows are on.. u can see them dancing around walls and stuff... the same problem seen in Soldier of Fortune 2 and Jedi Knight Outcast.. will Doom3 or the next engine from ID have the same shadow problem? |

gozo200x | posted - Jul, 14 2003 - 09:39 | this is really a fun game and one of the few this year I finished (and without cheating once). Difficulty is very well balanced, you never get frustrated or bored. Also nice to play at 1280*1024 with 4x FSAA and 16x AF without any slowdowns :)
Decent story and to hear original Steward as Picard is always a pleasure! A pity not more of the original crew are present. Also I didn't want to make out with the Idril woman, I was going for my dark haired teammate, but the game wouldn't let me ;) |

Harry "AR15" Wayne | posted - Jul, 14 2003 - 14:07 | : I don't see what's so fun about star trek games since the tv series is boring-a** hell. So now this new title it's probably worst game ever. On the long-run don't bother with star trek, because at the end-line you gonna end up pulling your hair-off if you know what mean. |

UNIT BITCH | posted - Jul, 14 2003 - 17:10 | first i like to say i use the fucking tilda key. if you don't fuck off. I think star trek games will mostly only be liked by star trek fans and sci-fi fans. If your not in that cataegory you still might like it. I think this game is a little too short thats my only beef with it. What do i like well they got hot chicks in the game thats always nice but lets not forget about Captain picard. |

a man | posted - Jul, 14 2003 - 17:10 | clearly wayne forgot his brain when playing this game. |

tom | posted - Jul, 14 2003 - 18:36 | short... typical.. the first one I completed in less than 9 hours, 1 day! Seeing how this is short too I wont buy it and the first game had hardly any servers and a lot of whiners playing. I think I'll skip it. Probably $60 in the stores anyhow.. overpriced for just really a MP game... thanks but no thanks. |

C T Reitzell | posted - Feb, 29 2004 - 22:27 | Finally somewhere to winge about this Horrible unfinished game...EF2 is a HUGE disappointment...EF1 is excellent...FWIW: I'm a big ST fan (prefferring Voyager)... there are only 2 actual improvements with EF2 to my mind: EF2 is graphically superior to EF1 & the Romulan Disruptor Rifle (the big gun that doesn't really work like a flame-thrower; but has 2 firing modes..the small shot which deposits little clouds of radiation which eventually kills opponents when they run thru or get shot with the cloud/radiation mist & if their health is low enough....or the alt fire which fires a radiation fireball that blasts yer opponents to smithereens....that gun is the only reason I play EF2....I wish that gun was EF1...) Game play on EF2 is awful!!!: slow & obviously rigged to frustrate the player. EF1 is FUN!!! EF2 makes me yell & scream about feeling ripped off by the unfinished feel you get from painfully sluggish game play. I don't care much for the quest/story in either game- but the holodeck mode of EF1 is awesome & I've been addicted for a coupla years to it. Gameplay is sooooo much faster with EF1 & player & bots in holodeck are much more even in regard to weapon power & aiming. I mean, just try playing EF2 holodeck on captain level & yer dead before yor first shot- let alone seeing any opponents to fire at...yet, If u play on commander or leuitenant level; u will easily dominate....massive difference in level difficulty... I love the podium at the ends of holomatches in EF1...This podium bit is pretty much left out of EF2....& on EF1 I score pretty well in Captain level on on just about every map (Master/Champion at about 75% Untouchable- I usually set no time limit & point limit 50 to 300 & adjust the run speed to about one third faster (from 400 to 575/650)).
Guns in EF2 take FOREVER to reload (yer usually getting killed whilst reloading)....& bots never miss u when shooting at you (the dern bots ALWAYS show up outta nowhere & steal ammo just in fromt of u...& it's waaaaaay too easy to kill yerself (I always turn falling damage off, but it's really easy to kill yerself firing guns near walls, etc...)...The EF2 holomatches are obviously rigged: if you set the level to captain & play against 4 other bots- you will dominate the 4th match & do ok in a couple others & get hammered in the other two matches. This is soooo maddening....obviously Viacom (my employer fwiw) hassling Activision led to the release of this unfinished travesty....Don't waste yer money or time on EF2- EF1 is a fantastic game, EF2 is a rip off....do yerself a favor everybody & stick with Colin McRae World Rally 04 that is a great game.
I apologize for sounding so negative, yet there is NO WAY EF2 is the "best game ever"....that comment is so far off; it's shocking....to each their own- still my own sez EF2 is no fun compared to EF1
