Splinter Cell
(hx) 12:34 AM CET - Mar,15 2003

Splinter Cell is a spy/stealth action game, using the Tom Clancy license - you know, the guy who brought you the Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon series of games, in addition to penning some of the very best military and spy thrillers ever released.

Developed by Ubi Soft, Splinter Cell uses the latest in real time shadows, slick visuals, along with nice ambient sounds and soundtrack. You play as an NSA operative working for a black-ops group called Third Echelon. You are Sam Fisher the "Splinter Cell". Alone shadow-operative in a world where lost seconds can allow terrorist plans to become deadly reality. You operate in the heart of hostile territory - Spy, Steal, Destroy and Assassinate. Just don't ever be seen. Because when the stakes are this high, the choice between leaving a witness or a corpse is no choice at all. When two CIA agents mysteriously vanish in the former Soviet republic of Georgia, the NSA's secret sub agency, Third Echelon, deploys Sam Fisher-its most capable splinter cell operative-to recover them. Fisher soon uncovers a deeper conspiracy: a plot that threatens to destabilize the world order and spark nuclear conflict.

Splinter Cell contains 9 missions across 22 levels through 4 countries : Myanmar, USA, Georgia, Russia. Your goals vary from mission to mission. They usually range from infiltration to extraction, from keeping still (and avoiding alarms) to occasionally open combat. Yeah, this game uses a lot of stealth. You even have a little meter at the bottom that tells you how visible or hidden you are at any time. Fortunately, you'll have plenty of ways to remain hidden. For example, you can turn off or shoot out lights and then rely on your night vision goggles to stay hidden while still keeping an eye on the bad guys. You climb, slide down wires, crouch, interrogate people, hide bodies, and of course kill people. You have many acrobatic moves (diving summersault, ledge hang, pipe climb, peek around corners and shoot, drop attack, drag and hide bodies, close-quarters stealth attack, gunpoint cooperation, human shield), and the game makes you use them all.. Some missions, like the Oil Rig will require you to use almost all of the maneuvers to get around obstacles and get you to where you need to be.

Along with the special moves, you'll get special gear. For all of you weapons buffs, be prepared to be disappointed, there are only two different guns that you get in the game - 5.72mm silenced pistol and a silenced assault/sniper rifle SC-20K with 40mm grenade launcher. This being a sneaky game and all, they decide not to give you any grenades for your handy-dandy launcher, instead SC-20K sports a flash/sound silencer and a muzzle-flash suppressor. The SC-20K also supports a number of alternative types of ammunition. Since guns are usually a last resort in this game, you'll get plenty of special gadgets: remote diversions, lock picks (standard set of picks, wrenches, and probes for bypassing standard cylinder locks), laser microphones, sticky camera, fibre optic camera, camera jammers, and other high-tech tools will help you get the job done. For instance, you can look under locked doors with your fibre optic camera.

As you probably already noticed, this is not a game for everyone. If you're looking for a Serious Sam-style FPS this game is not for you :) Splinter Cell requires you to really think about how to best approach any situation without being caught taking in a lot of things that most would take for granted. The levels in Splinter Cell are quite incredible tough, requiring you to make full use of your stealth skills and abilities while also containing secret areas and showing off the game's graphics engine to staggering effect. One big bonus that the PC version has over all the other incarnations is the ability to quick save and load at any time.

Splinter Cell is without a doubt one of the best stealth games to hit the since the launch of Metal Gear Solid 2. If you are really into the sneaky Thief-style gameplay, want to play with high-tech gadgets, and don't mind a somewhat linear experience, then Splinter Cell is definitely for you. And even if you never played a stealth game before, this is a good place to begin. You can try this playable demo (178MB).

System requirements:
Minimum: 800 MHz Pentium III / AMD Athlon, 256 MB RAM, DirectX 8.1b, 32 MB video card, DirectX 8.1b compatible sound card, 8x speed CD/DVD-ROM drive, 1,5 GB Hard Drive Space
Recommended: 1GHz Pentium III or AMD Athlon or better, 256 MB RAM or better, DirectX 9, 64 MB video card, DirectX 9 compatible sound card with surround system, 8x speed CD/DVD-ROM drive, 2,1 GB Hard Drive Space

Splinter Cell supports the following graphic cards: Nvidia GeForce2 Ti/Ultra/Pro/GTS/MX400/MX, Nvidia GeForce3 family, Nvidia GeForce4 family, ATI Radeon 8500/9000/9500/9700, Matrox Parhelia.

snd: 4/5 - damn realistic sound effects (3D dependent on your area, effects are just remarkable as you'll hear every footstep on broken glass), repetitious music (though never gets that annoying), Sam Fisher is voiced by a great actor called Micheal Ironside (Total Recall, Starship Troopers), voice acting could be better + why does everyone speak English? :)
gfx: 5/5 - gorgeous and full of detail (on a fast system with a high-end graphics card), extraordinary lighting (probably the best shadows of any game to date) , most missions take place in the dark, some collision detection and clipping issues
playability: 5/5 - excellent, great atmosphere, levels are incredible tough, good story (if you like political thrillers), relatively well done enemy AI, 15-20hours of gameplay, ability to quick save and load at any time, load times are very short, pretty linear and scripted, slow pace, some missions require trial-and-error style gameplay, no multiplayer, limited replay value
genre: 3rd-person stealth action
platform: PC, Xbox
release: February 2003
developer: UbiSoft (homepage)
the game is similar to: Thief, Deus Ex, Hitman, Metal Gear Solid 2
publisher: UbiSoft
Excellent
Overall: 88%

GREAT game ! A bit "consolish" but GREAT fun & stealthyness.

the_playerposted - Mar, 15 2003 - 17:38
hi "FGD", open the splintercelluser.ini file and find the "Resolution=640x480" key. Shift to "Resolution=800x600" or Resolution=1024x768" or more!

samposted - Mar, 16 2003 - 03:22
too linear story, too easy. Metal Gear Solid still the best

Livomposted - Mar, 16 2003 - 04:08
Metal Gear is poor. SC is better in all aspects (history, graphics, play, sounds...).

Splinter Cell is 10x better than metal gear solid series...less babbling & more action/real stealth. The game really looks good with FSAA @ hi res!

NOTHINGposted - Mar, 16 2003 - 23:54
How many hours of gameplay is there?

hxposted - Mar, 17 2003 - 09:24
to Nothing: 15-20hours of gameplay...

Tomposted - Mar, 17 2003 - 16:52
just dont see any point in 15-20 hours entertainment for $80.. No thanks. Plus there is no multiplayer so replayability sucks. No thanks.

NOTHINGposted - Mar, 17 2003 - 17:24
Sounds good enough to me. Now to find out prices for it.

TCposted - Mar, 25 2003 - 08:51
Anyone else notice that the thermal goggles look cooler for the Xbox? on the Xbox you can see the details of sams suit and in gun mode you can see the details if his goggles and hair, and in the PC all i see is a red, yellow, green fill in. also people have an aura around them and flames have a big aura around it. o yeah, how dare you guys talk about the one and only SNAKE!

DUFF(y)posted - Apr, 02 2003 - 21:10
Agreeee! Definetely better on the xBox - Why is it that this stupid PentiumIII black box has more real graphics than a 128Mb ATI card on P4 2.3???? The PC version is simply to clean... no feel of texture

koshmanposted - Apr, 04 2003 - 21:45
Metal Gear Solid is the best. This game is also good though.

Masterposted - Apr, 18 2003 - 11:58
640*480 is the only resolution supported for 32Mbyte gfx cards. Patch version 1.2 let you play 800*600.

knightposted - May, 29 2003 - 16:15
true it needs good hardware, but in 640x480 it's stil fun tu play. The hole gameplay is great. Though sometimes it was difficult to complete all objectives the game is very good. (whats wit 88%?)
