Far Cry
(hx) 02:18 AM CEST - Mar,31 2004

Far Cry is a first person shooter set around 2020 on a set of tropical islands somewhere in the South Pacific. The story and exploits are focused around freelance mariner, Jack Carver. Jack Carver, the hero, has left his mysterious and bitter past behind and dropped out of society to run a charter boat business in the South Pacific. He is hired by a beautiful journalist to take her secretly to an uncharted island in Micronesia. The game begins as mercenaries destroy Jack's boat and he is stranded on the island. You as Jack must find the journalist, help her foil the plans of the evil Dr. Krieger and his evil minions, and get off the island alive.

For a lot of first-person shooters it's easy to simply say it's just another first-person shooter and leave it at that. Fortunately, Far Cry is definitely above average. The first thing you notice about this game when you start is the graphics. They are stunning and everything seems so crisp, detailed and juicy, even at the lowest graphics settings. This is a real island, it's huge, it's green, the sky is a bright blue, the sand is clean and the water sparkles. There are different jungles, rivers, swamps and mountainous beachside cliffs. Of course, there are all of the man-made facilities as well. The physics engine is impressive as well. There's realistic water physics and the foliage provides a realistic amount of cover. Enemies also fall with a rag-doll style effect when shot. Also some structures can be destroyed with the effect being as you would expect in real life. There is no doubt that Far Cry is one of the best looking, if not the best looking, PC game I have ever played. If you are one of those people who has upgraded recently for DOOM 3 or Half-Life 2 you will be in awe. The graphics were impressive even on my non FX - GF4 Ti4600 w/o AA. No game up until now has offered such an incredible sense of immersion thanks to its graphics and style.

The second thing you will immediately notice in the game is that it's extremely difficult, and for good reason - the single-player campaign packs more than 20 hours worth of gameplay. There's no quick save option during the game (developers promised to add this feature in next patch), so you can't manually save your progress. Instead, the game saves at pre-defined checkpoints throughout levels.

Far Cry has pretty unpredictable and intelligent A.I. For instance, if the enemy notices that you're trying to hide, they'll advance to investigate immediately. So, you cannot simply hang back and pick off your enemies one by one - if you try this they actually come and seek you out! It seems the enemies have a very accurate understanding of what the world around them is like and how they can interact with it. Needless to say it puts a lot of pressure on you, giving you a sense of constant threat and danger. Of course, the tension increases when you enter the dark jungles. Even on the lower settings the AI in the game is very alert and smart!

Of course, there are many different kinds of enemies, and some of them are very strange, especially the mutants. There are some scenes when you are up against these creatures that look like they came from the new DOOM 3 that will scare the crap out of you! Weapons are varied and well done. Far Cry features plethora of weapons including Machete, Wrench (if it's needed, you can use it also for melee attacks), Jungle Falcon (a semi-automatic hand-gun), Jack Hammer Shotgun (semi-automatic; perfect for clearing small corridors or rooms with lots of enemies), P90 SMG (it reloads very fast), MP5 SMG (compared to the P90 Submachine Gun, the MP5 is less accurate but comes equipped with a silencer), M4 Karabiner (offers high rate of fire and reasonable accuracy over medium ranges), AG36 Assault Rifle (pretty fast), OICW (Advanced Assault Rifle - equipped with flat trajectory HE munitions), AW50 Sniper Rifle, M249 SAW MG (huge rate of fire; less accuracy), Rocket Launcher (designed to destroy enemy boats and vehicle), Flag Grenades, Flashbang Grenades, Smoke Grenade, binoculars and night vision.

There's also about five different drivable vehicles - Humvee (allows you to transport a lot of people at the same time /in Multiplayer/), Buggy (fast, quiet and pretty strong - designed to get across long distances in every kind of terrain), Zodiac (water's buggy - designed to get across long distances on the water), Gun Boat (fast and strong motorboat, armed with a 50cal, machine gun), Paraglider. In addition, you will be able to drive the vehicles in both 1st and 3rd person, and use powerful mounted weapons while driving.

In terms of multiplayer, the game features 11 maps and Deathmatch, Team-Deathmatch and Assault modes. Two of them are teambased, on of them is single based. The Assault mode is similar to the mode in Battlefield1942. There are also two different teams. One team has the assignment to conquer a base and hold it a certain time. The bases are marked with flags. The other team must detain that. The multiplayer isn't really anything special. But there's Half-Life-like mod loader in the main menu, so we can expect some interesting moods soon.

This is definitely a game I would suggest to buy. It should tie you over since DOOM 3 / Half Life keep getting pushed Far Cry is a game that you simply must play. Buy it. You will not regret it.

From what was shown in the demo, this game is horrible. I don't understand how it could have gotten such a high rating. Graphics were great, but that's all it has.

The demo doesnt do much justice to the full game, i wasnt overly impressed by the demo, the full game was so much better imho.

Feels liek Trespasser, looks like Heaven. Just needs a dedicated button for 'push' and make the rocks do damage. Sweet.

I second that. Demo was horrible - in terms of AI atleast. In the FULL game, AI, infact everything, is much better.

Man I could play the 2nd demo on 1024x768 medium details at around 15 fps outside but when I try to enter the research facility it turns into a slidshow 3-7 fps sometimes even down to 2 fps, well my system is P4 1.8GHz 512 ram pc2100 Fx 5200nu. Man I wish I had a way better system want to play this game.

2nd demo and full retail basically runs the same on my athlon XP2000(266mhz bus)@ 2200, Radeon 9800pro. And 1152by864 resolution with high detail except lite & shadows, it runs pretty damn playable, once i lower the resolution ,framerate doesn't really go down all that much either, i suppose its heavy on cpu. my 2cents

first of all, best looking game at the moment, jaw dropping gfx, cant describe it more. at the same time it runs on such a big number of machines (no ones forces you to have a pixel shader card, and it still looked good, played the demo on a geforce2mx and the full game on a radeon 9600xt). the AI is on the average superb, most of the human enemies at the higher levels are behaving realistic and very smart. best i have seen so far. the game is long compared to modern games. the missing quick save option, which can be added very easily through a line in a config file isnt really needed, the auto save option is doing a very good job. now the bad side of things: sound is very buggy on nforce2 chipset and onboard sound, the hardware mixing works sometimes, sometimes not, and simple stereo is no alternative. had to restart the game often to make it work properly and i read in the forums many have the same problem. the story is average, not to say not very original. i had the impression the whole story was moving too fast, the cut scenes were to quick, it didnt feel like they cared much about it or they just didnt have talented people in that department.

I just got it a couple of days ago, also UT2k4 and Splinter Cell : PT. Anyway i only played Far Cry for like 1 hour messing bout my system. NF7-S 2500+ @ 3200+ 2x512DC @ 400FSB 9800Pro flashed to XT @ 460/810. On 4.2 Cats WinXP tweaked service and no background appz running. 2x AA 4x AF my frames where diving 60-35 lowering settings to medium and messing with some other settings doesnt help much the shadows really eat up my frames if i lower em i can get 8FPS+ Im waiting for someone to write a TweakGuide and some forum users to experiment a bit more with ATI drivers to see which one best for this game. Im gona replay this game on NV40 or RV420 with A64 San Diego nF3-250Pro 1 gb ram.. Enough rambaling backing up my files burning cd's getting ready to format(norton ghost image) so i can get ready to play on a fresh system 30+ days no format :S on Windows im too messy with my system...

Zeusposted - Mar, 31 2004 - 05:11
here is how to add quicksave and quickload (although i wouldnt use quickload, on my machine it made dissapear the hud information, i rather load again the way you load normaly in the menu): you have to add followong lines at the end of the file "devmode.jua" Input:BindCommandToKey("#Game:Save('quicksaved_game');","f4",1); Input:BindCommandToKey("#Game:Load('quicksaved_game');","f7",1);) . then you have to start the game always with the additional -devmode, so it has too look like this farcry.exe -devmode in the start link property section. another tip, erase all the other stuff in devmode.jua or save it in another file, most of the things in that file are for testing, so cheats are enabled and ghost function, that turned out to be very annoying during gameplay.

Zeusposted - Mar, 31 2004 - 05:15
to bla, i was using the system system spec, only a radeon 9600tx instead of a 9800. i had shadows to high. 1024x786 resolution, water effects to maximum, the rest to very high or high, 2xaa. the resolution is what makes the game often run slow. try to lower it.

th4t1guyposted - Mar, 31 2004 - 05:27
What is up with this review? It's like the guy just copied it off the back of the box! Multiplayer is pretty lame, since the net code has room for improvement, and Deathmatch usually ends up in a camping sniper taking the lead. The A.I. wasn't really anything special either. There were many times in the full version where the enemy will just be running against a wall, or won't know how to get around an obstacle. Yeah, the game looks pretty, but that's about IT.

Zeusposted - Mar, 31 2004 - 06:02
who cares about multiplayers, its a single player game in the first place, and about hte AI, well didnt experience that, and how many times did you see that at how many enemies? and much more important, which game does it better?

ohnoposted - Mar, 31 2004 - 06:43
some of you are *bleep* retarted--this is the best fps outthere, i guess people badmouthing this game just to be *bleep* "different" while there's nothing to badmouth about (quick saves for losers, mp for *bleep* school lan parties), better learn how to set up and tune your PC or *bleep* upgrade (on top of that this game even optimized for lazy *bleep* asses, runs almost on everything). killing gfx, sound, ai, etc. the only things that take 10 from 100 score are the story (again, it's an fps, you're not gonna read a book here) and the ending (rushed out imho) but the whole experience is amazing, you wouldn't be able to look at games the same way after it.

honesty I really hate games like this that try to prove that you NEED a STRONGER videocard and Ghz to even play this game properly... what ever happen to coding smarter and using every single bit of code to improve on performance, it seems that games are continuing to be bigger and bigger requiring more space to be installed...

I saw many people complained about the save system because of the lack of quick save and stuffs. I personally found the save system inconvinence at the beginning as well, but soon I realized how thoughtful it was, because I actually care about not dying and really use all the tools(binocular, throwing stone) to scout ahead and plan my attack. The save points were also very close together which shouldn't cause any problem if you at least play about 15-20 mins at one time. I did want to point out how ridiculously hard the last level was, you can call me sucker but I died over 20 times before I had to turn god mode on...

th4t1guyposted - Mar, 31 2004 - 10:04
There was no way that this game deserved a perfect score. How many of you can seriously say that they will go back and play this game over again when the graphics aren't top of the line anymore? The vehicles are bad enough that they should have never been included in the game. Just because HX is on your buddy list doesn't negate the fact that this review looks more like a screenshot gallery than anything else.

jsolo: I currently have a GF4 Ti4600. But I'm considering upgrading my video card sometime soon :) I usually buy a new videocard every 2 years when my old one seems hopelessly slow in games.

This game is wonderful, but I'm still wondering why everybody wants to kill me? I'd like to walk peacefully... About the sound problems, I solved them by downgrading the general audio quality of my soundcard (in windows directX, not in the game) and now, it's great, like the rest...

vegaasposted - Mar, 31 2004 - 20:26
I really dont know what people are complaining about. This is easily the best FPS available. If you like FPS and you dont play this game, you are really depriving yourself.

@Zeus, "you dont know what you are talking about, at least people can run this game, and it even looks good on older machines and older gfx. most new games require pixel shaders, this doesnt, so whats your point?!? ok so people cant play it in the highest resolution without low fps, doooh, gee what do you expect from a game with the best gfx up to date" actually asking for a well coded game is probably too much especially when people swallow the crap coming out. They could release a really nice looking crap coded game and people go and buy it. What does that do for pc gaming? Nothing, they just know they will sell X amount of copies. I too decided, though this game looks good I'm just not getting it. From what I have heard is, if you can get it for free, get it. If not, just forget it. Not worth the money. So be it. I'm not getting it. I'm waiting for painkiller, good sp fun and the mp is sounding like a lot of fun. As was what I heard about Farcry and poor MP, glad to hear they still released it knowing thier MP sucks.. Oh but that's right, it's up to the community... ya... whatever. Nice escape clause to meet your shipping date guys! Graphics don't make a game, but it helps. Ya but Deus Ex really sucked. Have to agree there. Thankfully I didn't buy that..

Zeusposted - Mar, 31 2004 - 22:01
so actually you didnt play far cry the game, not the demo, and you are judging the game code? on what facts? i dont understand it, the game runs very well, on a wide range of machines, for a modern game i would even say on the widest range of machines, the single player experience is also very good, replayability maybe not very high (cause the game is so long and hard) but i never play fps twice. the ai is excellent. i can recall a recent game with those attributes. and again, ok bash a game cause it has bad multiplayer, i didnt test it, anyway, its like saying bf1942 sucks cause single player mode sucks.-and about painkiller, played the demo, was fun, gfx was good, ai was stupid (ok maybe that will be different in the full game). but i cant see why painkiller should be better in any part. really i dont get why people are bashing this game. i agree on hx review, although most of his review have often the same results, since he is only working with a 5 point system, he should rethink that.

Tomposted - Mar, 31 2004 - 22:10
I played both demos'. Time to finish each was 20mins, played them both about twice and never had the interest to go back to it. like u i play a sp game once and that's it. In 5-6months this game will likely be $19 regular, buy it then if it's not given to me. Painkiller will be a full game, with SP and full MP. As well, Painkiller is not AK's shotties, nades etc. It's different and borrows from older games in terms of the big boss at the end. Painkiller also has amazing gfx. So would I dish out $50 for a game that only really has SP in it or $50 for another just as good game with full MP? Hmmm.. I don't know. As I had 3 friends in the beta testing, I got lots of enough info on Farcry. The most important factor for me for Farcry would have been MP but considering what I have heard, it hasn't progressed much out of beta. It was just a rush to the shelves type thing and worry about bugs after. But Farcy is very impressive in gfx, but then so are a lot of games I have and a lot of games I have already have AK's etc in them. So the value in Farcy just for graphics pleasure, not a big thing for me and many gamers. You say AI is hard? Hmm, meanwhile I been told its pretty easy. P.S. I alway hate games with known bugs in beta testing and they still throw it on shelves with expectation they can patch patch patch. It's a habit that should be broken.

Ok after a fresh format WinXP SP1 Slipstreamed + Autopatcher 4.5 /Cats 4.3 all game settings max its smooth does drop to 40 FPS but way better after format

Zeusposted - Mar, 31 2004 - 23:19
ai isnt easy at all, i play it at medium settings, and it soon after start it gets very hard, and after level 10 there are no easy enemies, only when you can kill em from distance, otherwise you ahve to be careful, one misstake and you might be dead. at the end levels i often waited the human enemies and the monsters to erase each other out cause its unlikely to get alive out of such situations. i cant judge the mp part, didnt test it, and i dont really have interest in it, since i prefer real mp games for that, see bf. i dont see why far cry is only a graphic pleasure, i enjoyed it very much and so did many others too. i think its too easy to push the game into the barbie section of games. i want to see how half life 2 and doom 3 will top that, besides having the advantage of a big fanbase. a new fps round has begun. and i doubt half life can justify its delay.

Jaredposted - Mar, 31 2004 - 23:23
I agree with Tom. The demos only took 20 minutes to complete. The multiplayer from what ive heard sucks. And the AI in the demo sucked, the graphics were the only good thing. Zeus - Because this game ain't Doom. It's somewhat very easy to figure out that todays games tend to have efforts gone to it way many times more from older ones. If they had to tune the game for everybit of code, they will end up with a product like DoomIII, that will be coming. Its over 4 years now that DoomIII is in development. And how about half-life? programming teams are also very important. If you've got a lead programmer and great 6 optimizer programmer, you might get it right, with a less time about a year to pull back 4 years to 3. But then your budget would increase so many more times. They have to keep on the track with their budget. Not everyone has a fortune like john Carmack do :) besides, I prefer a game developed in 2 years with a mere sloppy programming, then I'd have towait for 4-5 years to play it. Jeez 5 years of developemtn is a VERY big time scale. You can easily lost track of your project. You can lose your keen to develop more :)

Well back to topic the AI is amaizing @ Relealitrc they hid ebehind trees move up close when im covering my self from fire. I think only ppl that get pissed of with this is game is those that have crappy PC's no offense, but u need to see the graphics in this game as i hate the syaing "Gameplay is all" its a lie would u like to play Far Cry with Quake1 engine dont think so....

Funny, most of the poster haven´t played the full game or only the demo, but judge the game like real ones. Simpe question: Besides the ones that haven´t a real life, why should anybody read this forum? Maybe, because he/she want´s to know what ppl that PLAYED the full game think about it? Questions over questions... BTW, after playing SP and MP for much more then 25h, i can only totaly agree with HX conclusions about the game.

Tomposted - Apr, 01 2004 - 17:46
demo is a representation of the game. I base my spending on demos. If a demo impresses me, I buy the game. If the demo does nothing for me then I don't buy the game. That's what demo's are for. Not my fault they released crap demos. I saw the pics of the retails and its obvious to see the demo had worse graphics.. who's fault is that?

Zeusposted - Apr, 01 2004 - 19:07
bying a game cause of a demo is the biggest misstake you can make, cause as you said, the game might be better, or even worse, there are only too ways to judge a game, play the full game, or test the full game, by renting it in your local videostore or downloading. everything else is nonsense (of course there are exceptions where demos represent the acutual game like colin mcrae rallye, but those are rare, demos are often renamed beta tests)

Zeusposted - Apr, 01 2004 - 19:10
i am never using ai autobalance ever again, after i used it on need for speed underground, which was named "opponents can close up" or similar. in the end the thing it was doing was that the other cars were always faster than you although you got a much better car and tune ups. i think the ai has to be the way it is meant without balance, you just have to adjust your skills, otherwise playing the game makes no sense, you can go watch a movie instead.

Tomposted - Apr, 01 2004 - 19:51
@Zeus, sorry can't rent games here, it's illegal. Second of all, you should write some game companies and know what a 'demo' is. A demo is a representation of what you can expect by buying the full release. As to NFS, I had ai autobalance on the whole time. I finished the game, it was difficult but I don't see the sense in buying a game and putting it on wussy level, in normal racing cars catch up. I didn't say I wouldn't get the game either Zeus, I said, I'm not getting it now. As I stated from the beginning of Farcry, it's nothing new except that they actually did the game with nice gfx. Gfx alone don't make a game. It's nice to see, but then there's gameplay, AI, multiplayer. AI from everyone i know says it sucks as it did in the demo and was a breeze to walk thry and then multiplayer was crap too and bad netcode and basic. Not worth the price yet, to me. I'll wait.

Zeusposted - Apr, 01 2004 - 20:12
ok i think we have our positions here so this probably my last comment on this topic, let me say, the ai is far far far from sucking, dunno how far your friends played it, but the demo level is level 2 or 3 in the game, so maybe tahts the reason. after level 6 or 7 (of 20), the ai kicks the user's ass. just my oppinion and that of my friends.

Tomposted - Apr, 01 2004 - 20:53
as I said, I'll buy the game when I'm really bored. AI was no challenge, none of my friends who bought it said the AI was anything to write home about. It's a game that can wait.

bdposted - Apr, 01 2004 - 21:04
Tom, don't comment on the DEMO version in this review section of the game you twit! have your 'friends' actually got far into the game? or are they judging the AI based on a couple of 5 minute sessions on the 1st level. I have many friends with the game, and yes, the AI is very challenging at later levels. This game is definately something you MUST buy.

Tomposted - Apr, 01 2004 - 21:20
ya i am commenting on the demo. Look up the word Demonstration, oh wait, I'll save you the time. Again, not my fault they released crap demo's. They release demo's so you can try the game before you buy the game. It's not a new concept people. [DEFINITION OF DEMO] n : a visual presentation showing how something works; "the lecture was accompanied by dramatic demonstrations" [syn: demonstration] v : show or demonstrate something to an interested audience; "She shows her dogs frequently"; "We will demo the new software in Washington" [syn: show, exhibit, present, demonstrate]. Out of 6 people I know, 4 beta testers, 2 people from work. 4 beta testers didn't buy the game. 2 guys at work did, said it's a walkthrough. So I question your skills at fps.

th4t1guyposted - Apr, 01 2004 - 21:57
The A.I. in the full version was nothing to talk about. When you increase the difficulty settings, the enemies just get more accurate and more aggressive, JUST LIKE EVERY OTHER GAME. They still get caught up in the landscape. There's a level where you ride up to this wooden shack in a boat in both the demo and the full version. Try crawling under that shack and shooting the enemies. They know you're there, but they won't do anything about it (unless you do something stupid). And you can take them all out. The A.I. in this game reminds me of Return to Castle Wolfenstien.

I agree with Tom. A demo is meant to show what the full game will e like, and the Far Cry demo wasnt good but it was alright. Painkiller was a perfected demo, and same with Unreal Tournament 2004. An example for anothe so so demo is Joint Operations. I just downloaded the demo for that and nless they make some improvement in the boats and the ability to put vehicles in helicopters and boats, i dont think it will be my favorite game.

bdposted - Apr, 02 2004 - 01:44
Tom, you don't need to get sarcastic with a dictionary response, I was just pointing out that it is always careless to comment on the full product based on how the demo worked. I havent played it personally, but I've seen it run, and got a great deal of people on my msn list that are playing it at the moment, maybe their fps skills aren't up to scratch, I don't know, or maybe searching for cheat spots, such as the one th41guy pointed out... every game has exploits like that.

bdposted - Apr, 02 2004 - 01:45

My rig isnt good enough to run it everything on very high, but I still liked it, so gfx isnt everything far cry has to offer. I personaly like the absence of quicksave feature, pushing F5 and F8 every 10 seconds sucks all the pleasure out and you really dont have to use your brain or skills to achieve smtng. PS. @FurY, no worries you wont change anything here, it's the same person using different identities. @fx5900 I agree but thats not what game makers want you to do. @thunder, agree 100% on the over hype of this game, it's getting rave reviews based on it's graphics not on the merit of gameplay or multiplayer. How many games have had trash reviews because of no mp. Farcry has mp which is plagued by bad netcode and unoriginal game play, did anyone say that? No, but they did for Max Payne and Max Payne 2 even when it was explained many times why there is/was not MP. It was a great game and the followup just as good but it's reviews lacked any emphasis on the engine and gameplay. @comment,it's not my fault I know a lot of beta testers and current game designers/developers. @fx5900, it's also not good to encourage piracy, period. That's what demo's are also for, to stop people from downloading pirate copies, try the demo and base it on that. If you want to dispute that, go ahead but that is what demo's are for. In light of UT2k4 that was a awesome demo and that's why I bought the game.

ya well ur one of few. this game like Tom says is overhyped and poorly rated all around, oh and i was a beta tester and true lots of beta testers don't buy the game after. WHY? cuz usually the game takes a turn for the worse, person doesn't agree with gold status(me), people don't agree with overall direction or people just rather test and move on. i'm not gonna say this game is bad, but it needs a lot of improvement and even as a beta tester i got bored of it. dev's didn't care about mp and it shows in final product and their excuse "we like community to build it up" was just a cheap excuse for, "if we don't release now we will lose a lot of potential sales". this game had a lot of potential to be even better but $$ talks. in my area, this game isn't selling well at all, shelves are full and store clerks say 'it's strange cuz it looks like a cool game'.

first of all you need a graphix card that supports direct x 9 seeing some posts here i think alot of ppl do not have such a card . sorry but your geforce mx is not gonna cut it. AI is good but nothing special multi is alot of fun . tho there shouldbe dedicated servers up for download . instead of putting 4 gigs on the hdd to run one. if we forget all the eyecandy we see a shooter that is fun to play . this shooter came out of the blue for me .. and judging the cover of the dvd i didn't expect alot of it . but to my surprise it is alot of fun . and people who say they where a beta tester ... well .. you didn't do a good job then :p coz tho even the game is fun to play there are some bugs in this game that are so obvious i wonder why they are still in the game . the patch fixed alot but still stuff left . the RL in multi is too powerfull . the engie class needs a better weapon then the m16.

Zeusposted - Apr, 02 2004 - 21:23
well i play the full game on a radeon9600tx, but the demo ran on my old geforce 2 mx, and i thought it looked even then pretty good compared to the games that also ran on that card (call of duty), so the fact that the game 1. runs on mx cards and 2. still does look good (no comparison of course to the new cards) speaks for the good engine. and beta testers well they test betas, i dont expect them or their friends to tell me how bad the beta was, i play the final product and i like it a lot. i had played once SOF2 beta, and i would never have dared to judge the full game by the beta.

Love the game. best looking FPS ive seen and wasnt delayed (I dont think, Unlike HL2 which will be out of date before it even arrives). everyone who moaned about monsters is kinda right, not overkeen as they kill you so easy you have no chance at close distance, although im not gonna go bitch about it. Take this game for what it is, a DAMN good fps build from the ground up that runs nicely on medium spec but looks like it from a animated film (good graphics) the waters cool (nice to see water thats not just a replection on black (see ut series if you wanna know what i mean). anyway its great for what it is and cryengine is a master peice... get off your assess and learrn to program... then your'll all see how hard it is to put a pixel on screen nevermind write a stunning game like this. tits.

well said Delorean, props to you mate =) I've been playing this game literally all day *headache kicks in about now* So far I'm up to the Pier level, hang gliding in all its glory while a helicopter and a boat try to shoot me down. loveely juvvly I haven't yet encountered the monsters, but if they're too powerful... well I didn't know that it made things impossible at close distance, I can see how that would be frustrating. Some of the scripting when the AI are in vehicles seem a little weird, like if I shoot someone in a stationary car from a distance, they don't even drive off (or get out to dodge the bullets). Funny, the AI could do with a tiny bit of tweaking with the next patch, thats about all really. again I say, to whomever stumbles across these messages: buy the game!

The developers of this game have done a great job. Granted it isn't perfect but they have made several strides in the right direction on both the graphics and AI front. So the story is weak but that doesn't come as any great suprise considering the amount of effort spend devoloping the engine and coding the AI. Just wait for the sequel or expansions now the developers have the foundations they can work on a better story.

GREAT GAME. Tense gameplay. Next-Gen graphics. Runs well despite incredible details. Harder difficulty settings does make AI smarter. With the faster monsters, sometimes you have to retreat (you do have a sprint button) and take aim at there heads. You have to aim for the head dammit and these weapons behave more realistically so you can't just constantly spray stuff and expect high accuracy, even the big rocket guys can go down in a few seconds if you concentrate your fire on there neck and head with the heavy machine gun. (I aim for lower neck cuz of gun kick unless its single shot setting)whats odd is rocket launcher doesnt seem very effective in comparison. The medium and smaller monsters are deadly, but can be taken out with ease once you know the best way to take them on (fall back, short burst fire to head). The game is very optimized , I couldn't help but think that many scenes from the game would run like crap if it was in unreal2 (and that uses only directx 8 ). Look at Halo, that used directx 9 effects, but doesn't look anywhere near as beautiful and it acually ran much shittier on my system. Far Cry makes the Halo programmers look like retards.

Ok I played the first demo and was blown away. I had just finished Unreal II so it's not like I just stepped off the boat. Unreall II was a beautiful game with some of the best "shiny" surfaces ever seen in a game. But with FarCry the graphics were even better. The foliage put that found in Unreal II to shame. The ocean wave action on the beautiful beaches with the trees and grasses all swaying independently just like in nature was breathtaking. Then I played the second demo and was a little depressed that the interiors of the buildings weren't a little better. In Unreal II nearly all of the lettering and video displays were fully intelligible. The information they displayed may not have been important but you could read all of it. FarCry dropped a little behind U2 in this regard. Now I have the full game and am up to the archives area where I must once again rescue Val. This may be nearing the end of the game, I'm not sure. The game has been immensely enjoyable and the enemy AI is almost always top notch, killing me more times than I care to count. The save game function has enough save points so that a manual save feature isn't really missed much. If you are killed there are only a few places where you have to battle for a long time to get back to where you were. I have read many complaints about sound glitches and have experienced a few. Delayed sound, missing weapon reports and such. There is one bug however that really Ahem, BUGs me. Occasionally the AI breaks down, the game continues to be playable but the enemies no longer act right. They will float along their normal paths but with their arms stretched straight out without moving their legs. When they fire the ordinance comes from the end of their arms. Sometimes this could be considered a good thing I suppose because with them standing straight with their arms spread they make exceptional targets. And with their arms out if you are in a doorway they have a hard time hitting you with their fire coming from a hand that's behind the wall. All in all I have to say this is in fact one of the best FPS games ever. The story, AI and overall graphics when taken together are far better than Unreal II. The bugs I've encountered I can live with since they aren't endemic. Usually when you reload a game, possibly quitting first and then reloading the engine, are temporary. My conclusion is that the much anticipated Half Life II will have to be something really special to top this game. FarCry is hands down the best SP-FPS on the market today.

great grafic, AI cometitive, real time editor, original idea, but after 3 hours of playing Far Cry starts to be like Project IGI, and this feeling afeected me in a negative way. If you feel like Discoveryng America you better play zis game!

Running this game on the new ATI X800 Pro. no problems at all. cranked everything all the way up and i didnt get so much as a hiccup. Of course the game play is freaking awesome. the demo is 1 level so u cant base shiz on it other than the graphics. which btw in the final release is even better. the only thing about this game that sucks is the vehicle control. other than that it gets a 99 out of 100

I got killed ... then... end of story... WTF? I actually liked the game very much... but now I hate it... some kind of...

This game is one of the best I've played so far. The graphics are out of this world. The textures, shadows and the look on the enemies/allies are superb but the water effects gripped me in and wouldn't let go, especially at night. Just watching the cloudy sky and blue moon shine in the water is a beautiful sight. The levels are very large and filled with intense action that will get your adrenaline pumping. Especially in the dense bushes when there could be a mutant or mercenary around every corner. The music really sets up a creepy atmosphere when you spend your time exploring, and it does well for the action too. Just about everything about outer quality is perfect. The inner qualities of this game are excellent, but far from perfect. I haven't finished the game because of extreme frustration. The checkpoints were coming out through my nose for crissake. What was Crytek thinking when they didn't include a quicksave system!?! This game has some over-the-top requirements as well. Some of the levels got a bit choppy on my rig (P4 3.0 GHz, 2 GB Ram, Geforce FX5200 128MB), which rendered the game next-to-impossible. Fighting off a platoon of elite-mercs at 10 FPS was the hardest part. Looking on the positive side of gameplay, I noticed that the mercs are incredibly smart and agile, the way they should. A job well done on that. The vehicles are very well designed but driving some of the road vehicles was awkward. They seem to slide around pointlessly. Nonetheless, they were fun to drive. The point; this one has some minor flaws but what game doesnt? I think Crytek did a very good job and anyone who thinks this game is horrible should give it another look. You probably missed what this game has to offer your first time. I give this a 94/100 and my final sentence: This game is a gamers best friend, but a computers worst nightmare.

I just beat it, was kinda pissed the ending cut scene was so short and didn't really have much of a story to it, though it did make sense, except for when Doyle said "Their Always Watching".. Who was always watching?

I don't know what everyone is talking about with the ai being stupid. I never experienced an AI bot that mindlessly ran into a wall. Ever. In the Whole game. I played through it on meadium, and i found it fairly challenging (very challenging on some parts.) The only three disapointments i have are 1) too short!!! need expansion !! 2) Dam level i didn't really like (no weapons to start.) I found that very frusterating. Thirdly, I found that the volcano level was waaaaaay to short! Sure, it had one difficult spot, but all in all, it wasn't too challenging (the krieger boss fight was far to easy as well). The only difficult part was trying to kill the million fat boys. The mercs w/ rockets were easy (nads nads nads). Other than that however, the game rocked.

So stop your teeny-bopper, gradeschool whining and LISTEN UP. Let a real man tell ya' where the bears crap in the buckwheat. And, BTW...if you're wondering how I know you are grade-schoolers and teeny-boppers--it's because you can't spel worth a krap!! What a waste of taxpayer's dollars, sending you to public school. Not to mention, none of you asexual, pimple-heads mentioned the biggest flaw in the whole game! First off, the graphics are fantastic. No hype--just fact. That is, if you have a machine capable of displaying them. Most of you little pussies that are whimpering about "poor programming" are just afraid to admit two things--first, you got a whimpy computer 'cause that's what momma bought you, and second, you still don't have any fuzz on your peaches! So shut and keep listening. You just might learn something. The foliage moving in the wind is so kewl that you almost forget this is not a movie you are watching. And the water graphics are almost as realistic. I love the fact that you can grab a pedestal mounted machine-gun and blow away an entire flock of birds, just for the fun of it. Hell, I do it all the time at home! I like the realistic, random movement of the sniper scope when you are standing or crouching. It perfectly duplicates the movement of crosshairs on a real rifle in similar circumstances. You have to anticipate the movement and s q u e e e e z e off a round at just the right moment to connect. There's been a lot of talk about the AI, pro and con. Reading these posts, someone unfamiliar with the game would be totally confused. Typical kids. One guy says it's sux, and the next one says it's the best he ever saw. Instead of trying to defend your position with pathetic, schoolyard arguing and name calling--SHUT UP AND LISTEN!! It's both, you knuckle-heads. Hell, how can you say it sux when the SOB's flank your ass if you stay in one spot too long. And the next thing you know, there's one of the stupid bastards standing sideways to you, twenty feet away, not caring that you are mowing down his buddies with your M4 blazing away! I almost hate to kill him when I finish off his pals. It's sort of like killing a retard--OR ONE OF YOU MORONS. More about the AI when we discuss Val's role. That is a very controversial subject that you pimple-faced little freaks never even mention, because the only thing you know about women is what you find scrawled on the wall of the school bathrooms! But have no fear, I will straighten out your sorry asses on that subject. Speaking of Val, let's get down to what the hell is really wrong with this game. Who is the sadistic idiot that thought of taunting you throught the whole game by keeping you running after Val, hoping to catch more than just a glimpse of her. Man, she is the hottest broad to ever grace a video-chip, and DON"T SHE KNOW IT. To hell with fighting--if I were Jack, I would have been on her like a fly on a dead tuna! Man, when they cut to that scene of her bathing in her undies, well, I can't say enough about the wonderful graphics . But, hell, she didn't stick around any longer than my first wife! Now THAT sux. If I was writing the damn script, we would have had to make a hasty retreat and leave her clothes behind for the rest of the game, and she would NEVER have left my sight. Now for Val's role as an AI. Again, there are pro's and con's. She sux, and yet she is very realistic. Hmmmm...The difference between me being contrary and you people being contrary is I WILL ARTICULATE MY THOUGHTS CLEARLY ENOUGH THAT EVEN YOUR UN-FORMED BRAINS CAN COMPREHEND. Let's start out by observing that Val would no only stand there doing nothing while you were beings shot to hell and back, but she would actually get in your way! NOT very realistic. Yet, Val was about as useless as you would expect a woman who was that good looking would be in a combat situation. That IS realistic! See what I mean about the contradiction. I got so pissed off because she was blocking my shot at an enemy, that I shot her in the frigging head from two feet away with my M4. She let out a yelp, but DIDN'T die or move. NOT very realistic. Yet, even after being shot in the brain, you could hardly tell the difference in her afterwards--just like a real woman! VERY realistic. Again, note the contradition. But she is so good looking, I really don't give a crap.
