F1 2002
(hx) 02:49 AM CEST - Jul,28 2002

As promised, here is my review of F1 2002, Grand Prix racing sim sequel by Electronic Arts. Took me some time but I finally did it! :) Also I have read some GP4 vs. F1 2002 threads in forums and again many gamers argue that to the ends of the earth for their favorite game. I liked to play GP4, that's why I decided to play this game a bit longer to find some differences. After playing F1 2002 more (about 6 weeks now), I have to say I'm much more impressed than I was at the beginning. When I compare F1 2002 to GP4 it's very obvious to me that both games have their good points and bad points. So it's not a big surprise that I like to play both games.
What you can expect from F1 2002? The game features season 2002 accurate data including Renault and Toyota teams and all the latest track modifications, seriously re-designed control system and improved car physics. Overall, F1 2002 doesn't look substantially different from previous versions, but it has some nice improvements that make it worth playing/buying. Well, here is a summary:

What is excellent?
  • excellent car handling -  very complex and believable physics model, super High Rate Physics setting
  • exceptional sensation of speed , high framerates
  • ridiculously detailed telemetry
  • completely reworked tyre model - tyres are very responsive to camber, toe-in and pressure adjustments
  • a bit improved damage model, new weather system
  • contains all the data from the 2002 season
  • Toyota and Renault teams and the brand new Hockenheim track layout
  • incredible force feedback (in some cases, it requires a bit of tweaking your settings)
  • you don't need super-strong PC (~P3 500MHz, 256 MB and some GeForce card is OK)
  • multiplayer up to 16 players LAN/Internet (GameSpy Arcade)
  • for both hardcore sim drivers and arcaders - you'll be playing a very long time! :)
what's a bit disappointing?
  • disappointing wet weather representation
  • too blurred and too grainy textures on some track surfaces
  • AI is just generally pretty poor (not enough aggression), but you can still have a good race with it however
  • replay looks weird  (plus lots of lag on slower CPUs)
  • the engines and sound effects could be improved, weird sliding tires sound
  • in game modes (a single race, a test day, racing school) you work on each track section by section until you've passed the tests but you cannot save the game between sessions
  • ponderous load times

If you want a good physics model, good force feedback support, ability to play via Internet and have a system with a CPU under 1GHz then F1 2002 is one of the better choices you could make next time you’re at the store. I can recommend this game to anyone interested in racing at all - you don't have to be an F1 maniac to enjoy this game. Download playable demo (55MB) and EA's F1 2002 - Nude Patch.

Minimum hardware: PII 400MHz, 128MB RAM, 16MB 3D Accelerator (the game doesn't work with old video cards that use the 3DFX chip).

Recommended hardware: PIII 500MHz, +256MB RAM, GeForce/ATI Radeon/Matrox G400/450/550, SBLive, Game Controllers: Act Labs Force RS Racing System (Wheel/Pedals), Ball Racing Interactive Speed 7 (Wheel/Pedals), Gravis Xterminator & Eliminator (Gamepads), Logitech Momo Force (Wheel/Pedals) & Wingman Series (Gamepads Joysticks & Wheels/Pedals), Microsoft Sidewinder Series (Gamepads, Joysticks and Wheels/Pedals), Saitek R440 (Wheel/Pedals), Cyborg 3D Force & X-45 (Joysticks), Thrustmaster 360 Modena (Wheel).

Hint: How do you turn on Super High Rate Physics?

edit your .plr file: EAsports/F12002/save/your player name and the player file

look for this line:

Half Rate="0" // 0 = super-high physics rate, 1 = normal

snd: 4/5 - solid, but not spectacular, in-game commentary from your pit boss, weird sliding tires sound, the engines and sound effects could be improved
gfx: 4/5 - cockpit/wheel modeling is extremely good (though I prefer the GP4 cockpit), robust and realistic physics model, well done car models, glowing brake discs, smoke from tires, disappointing wet weather representation, a bit grainy tracks
playability: 4/5 - for both hardcore sim drivers and arcaders, exceptional sensation of speed , high framerates, great force feedback support, multiplayer over LAN/Internet (GameSpy Arcade), ponderous load times
genre: F1 racing
platform: PC, Xbox
release: June 2002
developer: EA Sports
the game is similar to: F1 2001
publisher: EA
Very_good
Overall: 84%

great game; really well done; way better than f1-2001, you really drive this thing. compared to gp4? got both; love both; can't really say. But if you are into f1 series you should really like this game

Willposted - Jul, 28 2002 - 06:25
i love everything about this game. only thing i would add is probably a safety car option. when cars retire, they just dissapear. would be better if cranes or something got the cars out of the track while the safey car is driving around

Donposted - Jul, 28 2002 - 09:41
I love this game! I have been a big GP (and GP4) fan up till now. But this... I agree that perhaps the graphics (textures) are not so good as in GP4 but the GP4's car handling and physics are lightyears obsolete to this. GP4 is spectacular but this game is real. :)

Nikolaposted - Jul, 28 2002 - 11:35
I feel the speed. Multiplayer with player's only.Very, very pity.

Mark Gunsonposted - Jul, 28 2002 - 16:39
awesome game. much more enjoyable than GP4 which just feels dated. This game has a few minor faults which would be good to see fixed in patches perhaps? Multiplayer is very good except for the lacking CPU opponents. Highly recommended :D

i cant implant my microsoft force feedback wheel into xp? thnx for answers!

Erbozposted - Jul, 29 2002 - 02:14
GP4 is MUCHO better, but ya you allready knew that :)

Rick Andersonposted - Jul, 29 2002 - 02:36
I am having problems with the game locking up when you enter the pits during a race. the race goes on, but the car just sits.

peteposted - Jul, 29 2002 - 03:02
To Rick : in gp4 this happens radomly, best if you save it before pitting. problem should be fixed when an official patch comes out. for more info on GP4 goto www.grandprix3.com

Hi any game sit 4 F1 2002 Squads??

Matsposted - Jul, 29 2002 - 15:58
GP4 is way better than F1 2002. Even though the 3d engine in F1 2002 is sligtly superior, GP4 is the only F1 simulation out there that gets close. Just check out how you close up on cars and they jump from being nowhere to directly in front of you...

CliffZposted - Jul, 29 2002 - 16:43
yes yes GP4 is good but I just want a game and F1 2002 is more enjoyable..I like both I simply like F12002 better..however it would be nicer if the accelerate time in qualifying was easier to find as it is on GP4..cars look and handle better on F12002..tracks and background look better on GP4...one day we will have a complete game ;)

Erbozposted - Jul, 29 2002 - 20:50
GP4 loads a race in about 7 seconds, with F1 2002 it takes about 4 minutes, and still GP4 is so much nicer. Electronic Arts is lame.

CliffZposted - Jul, 29 2002 - 23:56
lol it takes you 4 mins to load? me its less than 15 secs and boom in to pits or on the start lane...GP4 takes me the same time...EA are lame how? because people are silly enough to buy the same game every year?

Peekybooposted - Jul, 30 2002 - 02:56
Gp4 compared to F12002 is the biggest steaming pile of poo poo ever, and this coming from an (ex) gp2/3 fan. Even f12001 is better. The cars in gp4 have ZERO feel and unrealistic behaviour. It's *not* a matter of opinion to state that Gp4 is an arcade game and F12002 is the most tweakable "simulation" ever released. Next to GPL of course. Some of graphical effects in Gp4 are quite well done, but that does NOT make a good game. Get your act together Crammond and do something NEW for once, instead of these gp2 rehashes..

Erbozposted - Jul, 30 2002 - 05:18
Hmmmm.... talking about rehashes.....

Willposted - Jul, 30 2002 - 10:59
F1 takes me about 20 seconds to load. if it's too slow, think about getting more memory, better cpu or a faster HDD

Donposted - Jul, 30 2002 - 12:16
Peekyboo spoke from my heart. I am an ex gp1/2/3/4 fan and though F1-2002 is not so nice but it is way more realistic in car handling and driving effects than gp4. I have a momo FF wheel. GP4 does almost nothing on it, but F1-2002, I feel like I was in the car... Great game. Come on Crammond, pull yourself together :)

Kryten.posted - Jul, 31 2002 - 00:41
don : what the fuck are you on ? have you ever driven an f1 car? lol no : Geoff has F1 teams behind his game, grand prix 4 is as realistic as you can get at the moment : nothing comes close, as he said himself. EA have what.... 44 nerds who've never even seen a live race. The physics are appalling, arcadey handling, graphics are not brilliant, UI is unintuitive, I assure you : this game is shit.

Peekybooposted - Jul, 31 2002 - 02:42
Krytey you sm-sm-sm-smeeeeeg heeeeed. Go read the gp4 vs f12002 review here : http://www.simbin.com - then come back and explain to us, why if Crammond has teams behind his games, why can they not do a decent simulation ? Your final sentence sums up GP4 not F12002. Get a clue! Granted EA have done some a few crap games, V8 Challenge for one, which needs some serious patching, but this one takes the prize for being the most fun and realistic F1 game I've ever played..and I've played *all* of them.

Willposted - Jul, 31 2002 - 04:48
gp4 has f1 teams to help him? i guess they wasted his time lol

biddsposted - Jul, 31 2002 - 18:55
f1 games are swag

Erbozposted - Aug, 01 2002 - 04:14
Kryten, don't be too picky on EA, they do know quite a lot. * How to make money with only changing 1 digit in their code. * They do know ALL sports (from a serious distance, that is...) Crammonds series will remain King-of-the-category, E.A. just ain't the company to beat him, not yesterday, not today, and not tomorrow.

Eddyposted - Aug, 01 2002 - 08:21
i've noticed that people are moving from gp4 to ea f1 series and none are going the other way. some people are just in denial

Krytenposted - Aug, 01 2002 - 20:47
Well having been in a two seater, i can assure you which is damned slight fucking nearer. F1 2002 is more comparible to carmageddon as far as handling goes. Sorry, but thats life. Too many of you lot are bothered by fancy graphics. "The graphics are nice so the game must be better than gpxxx!!!". Lamers.

Peekybooposted - Aug, 02 2002 - 07:05
jjjjeeesus - handling in F12002=existant -------- handling in gp4= non-existant-- if you think f12002 has carmageddon handling, you obviously have just used the basic setup and haven't gone into the myriad of force feedback / controller settings - with the superhigh physics turned to full, it's the most incredible race gaming experience ever. Graphics, though nice in EA's game are more full-on GP4 and as i've said before, that does NOT make it a better game. Realism and playability do. Being able to get around the track 'on rails' in Gp4 does not make it a better game. So nyahh.

Potenzaposted - Aug, 08 2002 - 17:55
"I have been in a two seater": Yeah Yeah Yeah Who cares, believe me the cars in F1 2002 do behave more like the real thing. For example Imola: the variante aqua minerale : just before going up hill : you will see (and feel if you have the change) the F1 cars slide slightly just before the final corner to go up hill. In GP4 car is on rails, no slide what so ever (unless you derail), F1 2002 an ever so nice little slide.... Just to show you F1 2002 Rules. And who cares about graphics? I still believe GP legends is a great game.

Da Fonzposted - Aug, 11 2002 - 06:51
If GP4 got 3/5 on playability, then F1 2002 should get 5 out of 5. GP4 really sucked when it came to gameplay.

Will Smithposted - Aug, 16 2002 - 09:01
i think i know why some people think f1 2002 has bad car handling. normally i play with the tv cockpit view and the car control is excellent but when i goto outside view, the controls is harder.

namelessposted - Aug, 16 2002 - 18:50
F1 2002 iz great...but the games loads too slow...would be better if load faster. When cars retire,or there iz a yellow flag,i've never seen a safety car on the track, and the retire car/cars dissappear suddenly.EA should fiz this problems and the game wold be perfect!!!

kevposted - Aug, 31 2002 - 14:35
im running a 750 thunderbird 256mb ram geforce3 ti200 and im having problems with game f1 2002. it freezes for split second randomly with settings high or low. is this bug or something.

artposted - Sep, 12 2002 - 04:18
i'd like to find a good racing wheel for f1 2002. i've read some good revies on the momo ff wheel, but heard there were some issues w/this sim. any thoughts or input please?

GP4 RUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUULEZZ!!!! :)

Pissedposted - Nov, 20 2002 - 12:21
How the hell do I save a game in F1 2002? I worked my butt off qualifying second for a championship and then accidently pressed 'ESC' as the game started.. boom, the game exited and I couldnt restart or anything!!!

Bayes Masterposted - Nov, 26 2002 - 16:40
Well for starts, Kryten sounds like a right nob. "I've played them all, I'm right, you're wrong" Yeah yeah shut up you arrogant prick. Who cares what game we like? Personally I think that F1 2002 is better, it has a feeling more like Grand Prix Legends than GP4 does (which is definately a good thing). It's all down to personal opinion, and Krytey baby - yours is shite.

The Psychic Hedgehogposted - Dec, 19 2002 - 21:47
Don't have a cow my people. There's more important things to think about. Having said that though, i've got both games and both do the sport justice. The only difference is in the 'feel' of the racing. In my opinion F1 2002 just takes it at the line in that respect. GP4 feels a little clinical and lacks a bit of atmosphere. Just because it's EA don't forget to give credit where it's due. Geoff Crammond should be commended for pushing the boundaries so that we have a choice. I'm off to give Schumacher a spanking (not literally!). Merry X-mas everyone.

D Hill rocks the hoposted - Jun, 27 2003 - 19:29
F1 2002 is most realistic as it goes between gp4 and f1 2002. Yes i can say from experience.I am 39 years old and am the proud owner off the Williams renault from 1998.Its not tuned to f1 spec as when you buy them at auction you have to be able to get a tuner to fix them. Its been rolling road tested to 635bhp and rebuilds every 3000 miles around $6000. Before you ask i am a member off silverstone classic f1 cars club.I have only managed 197mph but then again its been detuned to be more useable. From this experience in mind i do find when you alter game to advanced physics the car is so like the real thing unless you have drove it you would never understand. So what if gp4 is more polished gfx than f1 2002.The whole point here is to make a simulator off the real thing. If its simulation f1 2002 if its just another racing game gp4 is you game then. just for the finish Car cost me my skyline gtr nissmo sold to a friend in scotland for 250,000 its 1000 bhp 209mph 0 to 100 to 0 in 28.333 seconds and holds the fastest custom road car 1/4 mile in japan. Also if you do win the lotto remeber that an f1 car as mine does only 4 miles to the gallon and it costs for f1 fuel $200 for a ltr tyres are $2000 for a rear and $1700 for a front. Oil i hget straight from renault at 50ltr drum $3,000. Expensive i know but to disclose what i do as a job i am not prepared to do but the company i own is the highest selling insurance brokers in uk
