Hitman: Contracts
(hx) 10:43 PM CEST - May,07 2004

Hitman: Contracts is third installment in the Hitman series which takes you into the mind of a ruthlessly efficient contract killer, showing the action and the world through the eyes of Agent 47. Once again you assume the role of Agent 47, a skilled assassin who is rewarded for completing contract killings as cleanly as possible, without hurting innocent civilians or being caught. Personally, I'm glad that the original Hitman is back. I liked the original Hitman, despite its frustrating difficulty level and the lack of saves. Let's see what IO Interactive prepared for us.

In the original game (Hitman 1), 47 is sent on missions to kill a number of targets who were all partners in a cloning experiment of which 47 is the child. During the playing Hitman realizes that he is being manipulated and ends up killing his maker: Dr Ortmeyer. After Hitman 1 and therefore in Hitman 2, 47 retired to a monastery in Sicily where he befriended the local Padre, Father Vittorio. Father Vittorio was kidnapped by the local mafia boss and 47 went on a mission to rescue him. Sadly, Vittorio didn't make it and 47 is now alone again in the world with just his skills and his Silverballers for company. In Hitman: Contracts you take a look at 47's memories of past killings, in the way he remembers them. As you know 47 is genetically engineered and has trouble dealing with human feelings, but it seems that his human mind tried to convince him that what he does is wrong. 47 needs to find out how he wants to deal with this. The game begins in Paris as a wounded Agent 47 finds himself trapped in a dingy hotel room. Shot to the stomach and bleeding to death. It's not a good place to be - and it doesn't really get much better. As he lapses in and out of consciousness he experiences flashbacks from some of his most harrowing missions.

Hitman: Contracts features 12 levels set (of which 4 are complete new missions) in diverse locations where you must come face to face with some of the world's most dangerous criminals and high profile targets. There's some really disturbing action going on in a Rumanian slaughterhouse (creepily reflective pools of blood splatter soak the floor rock), then there's an English manor, complete with lake, garden, stables, tennis court, towers, cellars, library, kitchen, guests for a hunting party, guards, dogs and horses. Another mission will take you to Paris, Siberia and Hong Kong. There's also a level with strippers, and they do have some really good moves (cough). All the levels are stylistically dark, more so than in any previous Hitman game, with each level veiled in darkness and covered in rain.

Hitman Contracts mission list:
01: Asylum Aftermath *
02: Meat King's Party (Romania)
03: The Bjarkov-bomb (Siberia)
04: Beldingford Manor (England)
05: Rendevouz in Rotterdam (Rottterdam) *
06: Deadly Cargo (Rotterdam) *
07: Traditions of the Trade (Budapest) *
08: Slaying a dragon (Hongkong) *
09: The Wang Fou incident (Hongkong) *
10: The Seafood massacre (Hongkong) *
11: Lee Hong's End (Hongkong) *
12: Hunter And Hunted  (Paris)
* "re-visited" locations - which does not mean that they are completely identical to their "Hitman: Codename 47" counterparts.

There's a very similar line-up of weapons to those in the previous two games to complete your "tasks", with everyone's favourite silver .45 hardballers in here, of course, alongside sniper rifles, SMG's. They've also added the meat hooks because they aren't illegal to carry in a slaughterhouse. Also a cue stick is both deadly and perfectly PL to carry in a billiard saloon, and a pillow doesn't seem out of place when in a bedroom.

The gameplay is identical to that in the previous two games and, after receiving your objectives at the beginning of each level, it's pretty much up to you how to play the game - you have several different ways how to finish the mission. It's usually pretty dirty job, but who cares - the client hires you and you do the job :) After each mission you are graded on your performance, how many innocent people you kill, how many enemies you take out. If you never played Hitman or Splinter Cell, it's not like a normal shoot-em-ip where you run in a straight line firing randomly at anything you see - it's a stealth 3rd person where you have to calculate your every move and try your best to only kill your intented target without causing too much collateral damage on the way. So, if you want successfully finish the game you must meticulously plan out each mission before actually investigating the actual assassination. There're three difficulty levels: normal, expert and professional. The number of saves that are permitted vary by level, with normal providing the most at 7. Needless to say that patience is an absolute must for this game!

My only complaint is that this game is really extremely short - you can gun your way through all the levels in 10 hours or less. As great as the gameplay is you'll find yourself screaming "I want much much more!" at the end. Also, there's no multiplayer, so the gameplay is a bit limited. Fortunately, the missions in the game are constructed once again around multiple solutions to level objectives. This provides quite a bit of replay value as you'll want to play through the game several times to see how creative you can get in making the kill.

Overall, Hitman: Contracts is a worthy successor to the previous titles. It might not be worth buying at $50 bucks (very short gameplay time) but it's definitely a fun game to play. If you liked the first Hitman you will definitely enjoy this one as well.

First of all HX, the glacier engine isnt ready for multiplayer and Hitman wouldnt need a multiplayer game. At least up it a bit to 82% I though this game is amazing.

doncorleoneposted - May, 07 2004 - 23:08
Nothing but a "best of", with missions from the previous episodes. Disappointing. Hitman 2 is still the best.

I had high hopes on this game but every ones saying only hitman fans are gonna like it well i am one guess i will take it anyway

Gazposted - May, 08 2004 - 01:40
I hated that game i miss the good story like in the first game... Boring buggy and short(i guess this is the good part lol)

"you can gun your way through all the levels in 10 hours or less." Well, You should start by dropping the pistols/guns. All levels can be completed withot shooting, and it _much_ more fun that way!

chrisposted - May, 08 2004 - 04:20
for the love of god ....... its soo fun to kill people... this game is fun!@

FX5900posted - May, 08 2004 - 04:30
Sessy is right; each level can be completed without killing -- and you score a BONUS WEAPON at the end of the stage if don't kill!

Initially when I played the game I thought it was great but as I played I found the story is like next to nothing and half the time you don't know what you are doing, graphics are great but gameplay wears on you after a while. I personally think the game is overrated now, I think I'm like thru the game @ mission 9 and more I play I don't know but the story man, there just isn't any substance to it at all! I guess I have to agree with goldberg even though he's confusing but I'd say if you liked Hitman 1, you'll like this game just don't count on a great story. I give this game maybe 70%. Snd =3/5 (i see nothing big in the sound and EAX? what game don't have that? but voice acting is decent and weapons are 'ok'). gfx 3/5 graphics are nice but it kind of gave me a console feel to it and 1st person isn't overly impressive, i've played virtually all 3rd person), playability 3/5 (you play it once, doubt you'd play it again, i'm just counting down time to finish and de-install and no multiplayer) and HX personally, if you say story is 'pretty good' I fail to see how that equates to 4/5. I don't know but your reviews have just seemed to go downhill. You discredit things and you give high score and then reflect back to Painkiller where you gave lots of praise, high score and then the math doesn't figure for a final score. 70% max I give this game. If you liked Hitman 1, then you will maybe like this one. Gfx pretty much make up this game and the fact there's no multiplayer doesn't substantiate the cost at all. This is a $30 american game at most. For the money, Painkiller is just so more worth it and the cost of Painkiller is just way more attractive for more gaming! Just my opinion.

I liked this game. If your looking for a mindless shooter, then this isnt it (although you can still play it like that if you want). This game is all about the gameplay to me, and it has it in spades. You can acomplish missions in many different ways, but the most fun to me is to try to be a silent assasin (and thus getting bonus weapons). To sum it up: i recommend this game, and i dont care for too many 1st/3rd person shooters these days.

welcome back Tom. We missed you. =)

Jaredposted - May, 08 2004 - 15:55
I loved this game. I completely disagree with Tom this time. On Gamefaqs in some of the reviews and FAQS and in the forums, they tell the story for both Hitman 1 and 2. This will help you understand Contracts better. And it has so much replayability. There is so many ways to beat a level. Just try the Lee Hong level, well, just about every Honk Kong level has many ways of replayability.

Tomposted - May, 08 2004 - 22:35
As I said, if you like Hitman 1, this game is for you. I didn't mind Hitman 1 though I lost the interest to finish it. Agent Smith, I never left just nothing worth commenting on.

Sad Pandaposted - May, 08 2004 - 23:09
I think that hitman is one of the best games for pc, but ... i'm disapointed with this game ... the same levels are really anoying (i'd be so hard to make new missions, but they .... no comment). However is the best game right now (i killed everybody :D, i'll try one day be professional ;)), but they should make mulitplayer and some extra mission(no, not the same as in hitman2 :>) or just some mods .. because game is too short :(

Max Pleasureposted - May, 09 2004 - 06:18
Any female nudity in this game?

Tomposted - May, 10 2004 - 22:57
It seems I was a little quick to judge the game, it's 'ok'. I like games that take advatange of modern graphic features and this game does that. My only gripe now is simply the story, where is it? Not enough detail and you are left with the objectives screen only. I restarted the game and been killing with the wire/needle only..I can't see the worth in the game playing without killing anyone, defeats the purpose to me but to each his own.

Max Pleasureposted - May, 11 2004 - 08:14
Tom - if there's female nudity, who cares about a storyline.

Dr Fraudposted - May, 11 2004 - 10:09
Yes there is female nudity, atleast partial as shown from the strippers in the game. For the violently inclined you can still do the things from the previous Hitman games. Beat/shot women around until their bodies hit that magical angle where the panties show. Or give them bullethole nipples, always fun. Or go see a shrink for your mental problems. Oh no wait, that last bit is isn't ingame. Maybe in an future add-on. Oh yeah, the ending is pretty crappy and inconclusive. Looks like the intend to do atleast one more hitman-game.

Max Pleasureposted - May, 11 2004 - 15:36
Magical angle is right! Unreal! What color panties are they wearing?

Tomposted - May, 11 2004 - 19:59

i Got a Problem Loading the game. my pc its P 4 1.5, 512 ram, 32 video, win xp. i can load other game like far cry, max pain, gta 3 and vc, fly simulator, etc. but i cant load the game...i install and them run...but has a black flash screen 1 second and normaly stays in destop of windows. what do i have to do?

Tomposted - May, 11 2004 - 20:33
and u installed the patch that apparently address the black screen?

Max Pleasureposted - May, 12 2004 - 02:42
HX, i don't see any screenshots showing the "Magicial angle". Any chances of some??? :-)

What been nex. I am waiting Hitman 4

solarposted - May, 12 2004 - 23:13
I found the story quite hard to follow through the game, and actually trying to work out what is going on. The only real way of understanding whats going on is taking a look at the Hitman web site which explains thinks nicely. Overall a bit gutted about the outcome of what has become a great series. Mostly because of the lack of game. Best bit of the game was the end. makes Hitman 4 inevitable and sounding really good.

xxxxposted - May, 13 2004 - 03:36
why is it people can have excuses for a game. sorry but going to a website to get background info on a game you bought is crap. its called cutting costs and incomplete game. had they included videos and background this game could be rated awesome, but they blew it. maybe they'll smarten up with hitman 4 and put more budget into it and include more story. u just don't spend 49 bucks and go to a website to get filled in.

MCJesusposted - May, 13 2004 - 23:01
I'll agree that this game is short an unimaginative, however, it is far from crap. As im sure you all know Eidos has already bought the rights to a hitman4 website, so there will most likely be a 4th installment. With that in mind you could choose to look at the series as I do. the order as it stands now should be hitman 1 Hitman contracts, (possibly hitman 4), and finally Hitman Silent assasin. if you look at contracts as a prequel to the second and fouth games it fits rather nicely. because at the end of silent assassin i thought it was clear that he was through working for the agency so contracts would have to cronilogically be before it, and the way that contracts ended left me ready for the 4th one. I think when all is said and done and there is a 4th one then the pieces will fit better and justify the lack of a storyline in this one, and if not..... who knows what the hell they were thinking

Jaredposted - May, 14 2004 - 00:29
Actually MCJesus they didnt just buy the rights to a Hitman 4 website, if you have been caught up in your gaming news you would know that about a month ago they announced Hitman 4: Blood Money.

Tomposted - May, 14 2004 - 17:05
hehehe Jared! so negative! Be nice like me! Hahahahaha!

Jaredposted - May, 14 2004 - 23:31
But I like Hitman Contracts unlike these other Mr. I need a game with a storyline thats equal to a Stephen King or Michael Chrichton novel and the game must make perfect sense. Did Doom make sense? Not really. You were just one luck Marine.

Frogbaitposted - May, 23 2004 - 13:45
Anyone out there who reads a review that says you can play this game on an older PC - BEWARE! Reviewers get to play with such modern PCs they don't understand the meaning of the term. I turned all the detail to the lowest possible settings, and it was like playing a game through mud (Athlon XP 2000, 512MB, GeForce 5600FX). I know my system isn't as new as it could be, but I would expect to be able to play the game comfortably when exceeding the minimum specs, especially when it offers nothing over the original Hitman.

The hitman series is one of the best stories i've ever heard (and played), agent 47 is the hitmans hitman, no compassion, no emotion, no hesitation, just the contract, get the job done or die trying, Agent 47 - you're my role model.
