Painkiller is a first-person horror shooter, designed to satisfy the gamer's hunger for intense, fast-paced action. You play as Daniel Garner, a seemingly regular guy who as just been killed in a horrific car accident. Trapped in a dark and unwelcoming world between heaven and hell, you struggling to uncover the reasons why you've been denied entry into heaven. Awaiting your purification, you must fight through a seemingly endless number of demon soldiers as you to attempt to stop an imminent unholy war. In other words, you are Painkiller, a mercenary for hire, charged with cleaning out nests of the undead. In the game it means you have to shoot everything that moves!
Painkiller features five chapters, to be exact there is 24 single-player levels in total (19 levels + five boss arenas). Most levels are admirably large. Every level is a separate entity, starts you off with full health and a limited amount of ammunition. Progress through them typically requires killing all the enemies and then moving onto another area to do exactly the same through an on-screen compass. There are secret areas, armor pick-ups, holy items, and gold coins. After completing a level, you receive a score based on your progress, so you can compare the number of kills, pickups, secrets, and souls collected to the level's maximum. Each level also has a "card challenge", a specific task you must complete to earn a Black Tarot card. For example, one stage may award a black tarot card for simply killing all of the creatures or destroying all of the objects. This tarot card system gives you some extra powers and abilities. Some cards can be used to enhance your abilities throughout play, while others can only be used once per level. Each level takes place in a different area, there's an abandoned prison, an old monastery, a ruined castle, even the opera house. The levels are filled with hordes of enemies that come at you relentlessly. There are Skeletons, Zombies, Amputees, Maso Commandos, Hell Bikers, Banshees, Demonic Monks, Possessed Ninjas, and more. Many enemies also have a few different kinds of attacks, Maso Commandos sport huge flamethrowers to roast you with, Evil Monks throw their double-handed axes at you and Leper Monks will even use the corpses of Zombies you just killed. Well, the baddies don't have many tactics, so don't expect some incredible AI like Far Cry. But I think sometimes you need to see the quality in simplicity, not in pure quantity of features and elements. The gameplay is really cool in Painkiller, and you can't even complain about the AI because you don't need AI here.
The game features 5 different weapons - Painkiller, Stakegun/Grenade launcher, Shotgun/Nitro Gun, Rocket Launcher/Chaingun, Electrodrive, each of them features primary and secondary modes that are totally unique to each other. All of the weapons are useful, and some are more effective on certain enemies and bosses. For instance, Painkiller (basic weapon with unlimited ammo) is a grapple type weapon with beam enhancement (laser-harpoon-like function), the Shotgun is ineffective in long distance fights, but can take half of the enemy's energy from point blank, the Nitrogun freezes the enemy for a very short time, doing a little damage. However, you can shoot a monster with your Nitrogun and immediately press Alternative Fire for the Shotgun, blowing the frozen enemy to pieces. Probably the most interesting combo is the wooden stake gun/grenade. With this sweet "toy" you can easily stake enemies to the wall or floor. It's a very enjoyable and powerful weapon, despite it has a slow reload time. Needless to say the wooden stakegun is my favorite weapon! :) When killed, the baddies leave behind the green glowing orb, which you can collect. After collecting a certain number of them you will go into a 20-second "god mode," and do some serious damage on the enemies. The screen changes to black and white, and the enemies glow red (see pic #50).
The next cool thing in the game is the physics. There aren't destructible walls like in GeoMod engine, but the utilized Havoc 2.0 physics engine provides phenomenal rag-doll effects for the bodies and destructible objects. For example, you can shoot rockets between two monsters and they will be pushed back by the explosion splash, one of them may hit the door and break it, the other may hang onto the chandelier (which will start swinging). Havok is sweet, isn't it?

In terms of multiplayer, Painkiller features a couple of multiplayer maps (dm_psycho, dm_sacred, dm_fragenstein, dm_unseen, dm_illuminati, dm_mine, dm_tower, dm_warehouse) and 5 game modes with up to 16-players - Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, People Can Fly (a modification of Deathmatch 1 on 1 ~ in this mode both players have only the Rocket Launchers and the damage to the other player can be done only when he is airborne), Voosh (each player has the same weapon and after a certain period of time each player's weapon is switched to either the next in line) and The Light Bearer. The Light Bearer mode assumes that quad damage never wears off. The first player who grabs the quad can use it as long as he stays alive. Also, with every successful frag, the player gets ten additional health points. When he is dead, he drops the quad, and another player can pick it up. The winner is the player who has the quad at the end of the game. However, every time someone picks up the quad, the time limit is raised by 30 seconds to make it possible for other players to get their chances. There are no vehicles, no character classes, no cooperative mode and relatively small number of maps. So these modes will rather appeal to hard-core gamers who want Quake-style battles with some unique weapons.

As I stated in my previous Painkiller's coverage of beta version and demo, Painkiller reminds me of the good Doom, Quake, Blood days in terms of playability and atmosphere. Yeah, It feels very old school just like Doom, Quake, Blood mixed with Serious Sam-like "intense" gameplay - you will be constantly outnumbered, fighting against seemingly insurmountable odds - if it moves, shoot it and if it still moves stake it to a wall! :)  There are no puzzles, no adventure elements, so if you are looking for an in-depth storyline will have to look somewhere else. Also, I've noticed that many people compare this game with Serious Sam. Well, I don't think this game comes too much close to Serious Sam. The fast reactions and accuracy and the seemingly endless number of enemies coming at you, these are the things I remember already from the classic old-school shooters. All in all, it is absolutely worth your well earned $39.95. Rock stable gory horror action, what more is there really to whish for? Enjoy!

Painkiller's multiplayer rocks. The single-player sucks on the first few levels, but gets better once you get to the middle/end of the first episode.

How does 5/5 in everything equate to 88%? Something tells me HX was too afraid to go in the 90's.. to bad, I think this game deserves it. Best graphics going and single player if you have a decent card is smooth as hell. Multiplayer netcode is not bad, needs a patch(and for initial release is pretty solid) but it also brings originality to the table too or at least something newer in gameplay. 92% is my score.

th4t1guyposted - Apr, 22 2004 - 07:59
I agree with the 88% score (and I love this game). However, just about all the other reviews that go into the 90's I don't agree with. A game had better be pretty damn special to get a 90%.

Might be the best shooter since the original Quake, whose influence is all over it. It's got that delicious old school feel - fast fast fast plus harsh - and superb build quality.

Tom, i downloaded PainKiller demo 2 on your high recommendation... and while we agree on everything else we discuss on this forum (especially your opinion on ATI), I was somewhat disappointed by PK. The graphics are very nice at 1600x1200 + MaxDetails, but the entire game is like Serious Sam 2. I loved SS2, but it's been done before. What am I missing?

callumposted - Apr, 22 2004 - 18:43
I NEED this game I got fifteen pounds.(by the way im 10 nearly 11) Is it 25 pounds?

stumpusposted - Apr, 22 2004 - 18:58
I was swept away by the first demo and the fact that it had a 'story' to it (or so i thought) and was soo damn moody. *Then* i played the second demo and it completely wiped away the 'doomesque' feel of the first and just fitted into the Serious Sam mould of ENDLESS spawning monsters. The only thing that made PK different was the Havok ragdoll engine, you quickly get bored of killing your 100th and 'wooing and ahhing' at the ragdoll effects. Sorry, there's nothing to convince me to buy the full game. Doom and Quake held you in intense moments, those were the TRUE oldies. PK just THROWS umpteen spawning monsters with NO finese to speak of. Shoot, shoot and even camp and shoot! I've stood picking them off pointlessly in tight corridors or glitches stuck on steps (the AIs favourite screw up-can't climb steps) Forget the difficulty scale, that's just a developers excuse to make the game appear better than you. Remember Doom 1s diffculty scale? the harder you made it the MORE difficult and DIFFERENT the enemies you meet. NOT more and more endless masses of the same type!!

Tomposted - Apr, 22 2004 - 19:48
I stand by my comments. @Bill Gates, what game 'isn't a clone'? @Stumpus, I don't even believe you play games, you're so out to lunch. Here is the Moron Statement of the Year. "Forget the difficulty scale, that's just a developers excuse to make the game appear better than you." I'm still playing single player, I'm also playing MP on Painkiller and the fun has yet to even come close in wearing out. This game is the best thing there is on the store shelf right now. Once the MP patch comes out this game will rock even harder! UT2k4 I thought would rock but I got tired of the gameplay, the vehicles are fun but get boring fast and there are just too many losers playing that have zero concept of anything regarding team play. Seeing how I have a life and don't have time for a Clan, I have to pass on UT2k4 and I 'just' bought it less than 2 weeks ago.

WKa0posted - Apr, 22 2004 - 19:49
God dammit this game is good, its a greeeat stress killa, yeah its a bit same'y but sod-it it-ul doo gotta luv the physics, came accross a rope bridge on chap 1, its swaying and responce to me walking on it was very kool, pinning the enermys to the walls wif the stake gun is bloody wikid.

Tomposted - Apr, 22 2004 - 20:05
Yup! I know. that bridge is very wicked. There's more to come too, it just gets better and better! I think in my hour or two a night I get to play it, I'm about 50% way through and I'm still saying cool. MP is pretty solid too but netcode needs a little work, but on really good servers it's like it's already patched.

stumpusposted - Apr, 22 2004 - 20:37
Tom,I've probably been playing games longer than you've been on this planet! Just because i have a differing opinion to you or everyone elses, all you can do is bad mouth.(just shows your mentality) The trouble is it's GOOD to have YOUR OWN opinion, be it constructive and not full of verbal diahorea! Or do we all have to be sheep and follow the masses. All i have said is 'seen it all before' apart from the gimmick which is the Havoc engine. I suggest reading posts or even REreading posts before you make an absolute plonker out of yourself, i was talking about PREVIOUS difficulty settings that games devs used. Making a game IMPOSSIBLY hard ***DOESN'T*** make it a good game. (putting DIFFERENT monsters is) The amount of people that ripped Far Cry to bits because of it's difficulty setting is tantamount to that!! As for the AI in Far Cry totaly different and clever, in PK it's NO-existant but eye-candy does not make a game for me. Understand now? Or is it 'your opinion and nobody elses'

callumposted - Apr, 22 2004 - 20:51
Look stumpus the whole point of this game is constant respawning monsters the game is based on SHOOTING everything. Doom and Quake are not like this serious sam is but this game IS MUCH better then serious sam

Regardless of your pathetic justification of QUOTE:"Only reason I have Farcry is because with trade ins it cost me -$1.53. Only way I'd buy it." Why ***DID YOU BUY IT***???? There is plenty more games on the shelves better than that. Or is that because the 'other' games require grey matter to play....something you blatantly lack. KOTOR,X-2 The Threat are way,way above crap like Far Cry or PK. Your going on about PK as if it's your MOTHER! I think you've taken this a wee bit too serious eh? Look at your reply? do you realise you've made an utter cunt of yourself with that statement.(damn it for having no edit button eh ROFL) I imagine your the typical type on those "Criminals do the most stupid things" shows eh? th4t1guyposted - Apr, 23 2004 - 00:24
The only similarity between Painkiller and Farcry is that they are both FPS games. I wasn't impressed with FarCry, and although the graphics were good, I got the feeling that graphics was all it really had to offer. Painkiller offers gameplay more than anything else, but it really only shines in multiplayer. Single player is so-so, but one thing that I do like are the weapons. Painkiller is not afraid to show that a good FPS does not need 57 weapons to be good.

Jaredposted - Apr, 23 2004 - 00:46
Guys, Tom is probably in my opinion, one of the best gamers out their in terms of tastes and abilities. He probably bought Far Cry just to play it once, and to see how horrible it is. Graphics are the only thing FC has to offer, and the vegetation models suck since you cant shoot through a leaf.

v1mposted - Apr, 23 2004 - 09:34
Funny that people are complaining about the difficulty, one person even using the phrase "impossibly hard." For me, and I should think for any expert FPS player, it's barely difficult enough! My biggest complaint is having to complete certain goals to unlock the hardest difficulty level; it should be open from the start. Also, about the demos: they barely show off the superb design which shows up in increasingly sinister and gloomy levels. This one's a winner in a big, big way, blowing away anything in recent years from Epic or id. Like I said earlier: it's the heir to the original Quake.

It's a glimpse into the future of what HL 2 will have.

I stated an OPINION -kinda BIG difference when others around make big noises and can't back it up with anything that makes sence -like yourself....Anyway, you some sort of self proclaimed internet physchologist that can tell what 'makes up a person' by their post? Or more like a complete plonker that posts to make an arse of themselves! ONE: I have ****NEVER**** owned an ATI product in my life. My first 3D card was (probably before you were born) Diamond Monster 3D (original 3DFX) right through Voodoo2,Voodoo3 and currently to my GeForce 4 TI4600. So STFU untill you work out the correct gear to put your mouth into so that it roughly syncs up with what little brains you have. Thank you

ZzzzZZzzz.... is there anyone you don't fight with All Mighty Stumpus? God you are boring.. Why do you even come here? You judge a game based on a demo which is a mere 'fraction' of the game and then to top it off, you got a dated 4600...Ya there's a card to judge a modern/new engine game with! Ya! go away're really getting boring. There is one thing you can do, talk with a Potty mouth! You're a pro at that!

Yeah Tom your everyones mother here, i've gathered that from all the incestuous backing you've received. As usual you and all the rest can't string a decent **CONSTRUCTIVE** reply back, other than bleat verbal manure. Your nobody Tom other than a glitch on the internet. But hey your a messiah here eh! As for the Graphics card; it's a DX 8.1 engine that PK supports(as well as DX9.1) and with my XP2800 Barton play's at max detail with no problem at all. Besides who was complaining about **EYE CANDY**???? It's the GAMEPLAY bore that i was talking about. God why is it people are SOO BLOODY THICK!!!! Never understand a conversation.. instead turn the whole bloody thread into a war because of their shallow lack of understanding BIG WORDS. So people like YOU Tom post back 'fighting' because it's the only way you can express yourself. Your the type that beat up woman because a 'normal' conversation goes right over your head =the only answer is with fists. Tom et al, i'll leave you with your 'real world' here -i can hear the giggling now. Tut,tut children time for bed.

Does anyone know how to get out of the old monestary level. I am at the part where the door on the left opens and you go down the stairs and kill a bunch of witiches in a cavern. Once they die I cant figure out where to go . Nothing happens and there are no enimies left.and no checkpoint Help!
