Blade and Sword
(hx) 04:30 PM CET - Feb,06 2004

Blade and Sword is an action role-playing game from Chinese based developer Pixel Studio, which combines Diablo-like action elements and Street Fighter arcade combat together. This action-RPG takes place in ancient China and heavy use of martial arts, special moves, and combos. In the game you travel through a variety of environments (40 levels which are spread across 3 chapters), including forests, caves, swamps, ruined villages, and palaces, as you slaughter your way through seemingly endless hordes of enemies.

At the start of the game you select from one of three characters: warrior with the massive blade who is strong and slow, fighter who brings a good balance of speed and offense, and, finally an assassin who is fast, small, and quick. Each character has a unique set of skills, which are divided into four categories, and each category has a progression of three skills, followed by a super skill. Skill points are awarded and allocated along a skill tree as in most RPGs. At its core, the gameplay is pretty similar to most action point-and-click style RPGs. One thing that sets Blade and Sword apart from Diablo is its emphasis on martial arts and a console-like combo fighting system that you can actually design yourself. Blade and Sword features 36 Kung Fu attacks and 12 Super attacks. As you progress through the game, you'll be able to build in a series of combos that are unique to your character. To experience all the different moves, you will need to play the game with all three characters.

It's not easy to recommend this game even at the $29.99 price. The game play much as Diablo II in many other ways (interface, cube that does the same thing as the Horadric Cube...). So, if you liked Diablo II and you still have any interest in spending some more time with similar game (though without multiplayer), then buy this game.

System requirements: Pentium II 266MHz, 128MB RAM, videocard with 4MB, 1.5MB free HDD space

snd: 3/5 - very mediocre, there are no spoken words, repetitive sound effects
gfx: 2/5 - very dated, 2D/sprite-based, 800x600 max resolution (default), night and day cycle
playability: 3/5 - Diablo-like isometric clickfest (over 100 hours of hacking, slashing, and clicking), unique mythical/Chinese flavor, 40-levels, very low system requirements, no multiplayer, action might get repetitive, a bit confusing setup for the super-attacks, rather poor storyline, maps aren't randomly generated
genre: action-RPG
release: November 2003
developer: Pixel Multimedia
the game is similar to: Diablo II
publisher: Whiptail interactive
Overall: 61%

Why would I want to reward a Chinese company for stealing Blizzard's intellectual property and ideas without paying Blizzard any royalties.

Seeing this game review makes me want to pop the old Diablo 2 cd in and give it a try, I have the expansion set for Diablo 2, Loard Of Destruction which I have never used yet, I had it for like 2 years jest never felt like playing through the hole Diablo 2 game again jest to see the new stuff in the Loard Of Destruction expansion, hummm maybe I will now. Blizzard does not own the Diablo idea, they stole it from Crusader also. Being one of the first 640x480x16 games that hit the DOS, it was the first of its kind and something quite a thrill. :)

The only Diablo 'clone' that I ever liked was Darkstone. It was/is a superb game, one that I liked more than Diablo. Hard to believe that a sequel was never made.
