XIII is a cel-shaded first-person shooter based on a long-running French comic book of the same name written by William Vance and Jean Van Hamme. For those of you who are not familiar with the XIII comic, the comic features a conspiracy ridden story which includes themes of amnesia, in which you must uncover sinister plots against yourselves, the U.S. government, and even the president himself. You begin as XIII, waking up on a beach located on the East Cost of the United States. You have been shot in the head, rendering you with amnesia. The only clues to your identity are the number XIII, in roman numerals, tattooed on your shoulder, and a key to a New York bank safe deposit box. You as XIII must uncover not only your identity, but you must also prevent a mysterious group from destroying the US government.

The gameplay involves mostly what you'd expect from a first-person shooter, there's similar weaponry and nothing really exceptional or innovative. There are armor power-ups, health, a grappling hook, and you'll use keys and keycards to access closed off doors and elevators. As usual in these games, you're going to zillion people before you get your problems sorted out. Fortunately, the game does add some variety in the form of unique missions, gadgets and weapons to use along the way. Guards can be used as human shields, broken bottles and chairs can be used as weapons and you'll have lock picks and grappling hooks, to name a few, to help your progress. There are several stealth-themed sections of the game, as well as other, more "run-and-gun" portions.

There are 13 different chapters in the game (~over 37 maps) set in both the indoors to outdoors. Weapons include the following - Knife, 9mm Pistol, Grenade, 44 Special, Hunting gun, Shotgun, Harpoon Launcher, Crossbow, Mini Gun, Kalash, Assault Rifle, SMG, Bazooka and Sniper Rifle. Aside from the single-player campaign, the game also offers multiplayer modes such as DM, TDM, CTF, and Sabotage (class-based team game where you defend or attack a series of checkpoints, depending on which side you're on) through UbiSoft Game Service or Local Network. There's no doubt that the multiplayer component is a decent addition.

Although XIII don't offer much new, XIII's graphical style is a big reason to play the game. The cel-shading works well with the Unreal engine and the cel-shaded characters contrasted against the realistic background give the game a nice comic effect. In other words, the cel-shading is a perfect fit. If you love comics and straightforward first-person shooters with some decent stealth elements, you'll get your money's worth out of XIII. Download & try these playable single / multiplayer demos and decide yourself.

System Requirements:
Minimum: Processor 700 MHz Pentium III or equivalent, 128MB RAM, 3D accelerator video card with DirectX 8.1 support and 32 MB, DirectX-compatible 16- bit sound card, 120MB free HDD space, 56,6 Kbps/TCP/IP for multiplayer

Recommended: Processor 1GHz or better, 256MB RAM, 3D accelerator video card with 64 MB, DirectX-compatible 16- bit sound card, 120MB free HDD space, ADSL 512/128 kb/s connection for multiplayer

snd: 4/5 - great music (Bond-like instrumental pieces), well done voice-acting (Adam West, David Duchovny), weapons sound somehow muffled
gfx: 3/5 - unique visual style - the comic strip look and feel, characters are mostly colorful, solid level design
playability: 4/5 - pretty good though very simplistic, some stealth elements, multiplayer support through UbiSoft Game Service/LAN (DM, TDM, CTF, and Sabotage), Unreal editor, annoying thing is the disc swapping even with a full install, a little too linear, save and quicksave features only send you back to the last checkpoint
genre: cel-shaded first-person shooter
platform: PC 4CDs (also available for Xbox, PS2, GC)
release: November 2003
developer: Ubisoft
publisher: Ubisoft (homepage)
Overall: 78%

noname.sorryposted - Dec, 21 2003 - 16:37
That's weird ... what happens when a chraracter turns to the side? are they 3D?

Josh Spaankposted - Dec, 21 2003 - 17:18
Is this XIII game any good!!! rumors, from PC GAMING NEWS say it a hit.

noname.sorryposted - Dec, 21 2003 - 17:40
So you have a review right in front of you, and you ask if it's any good?

Viliusposted - Dec, 21 2003 - 18:16

i fell in love with this game when i first saw it announced =D

stumpusposted - Dec, 21 2003 - 22:12
Play the demo,it's quite good. The only thing that stopped me buying the full game was the quick save *doesn't* work -which is to be fixed in the patch, when? i don't know it's been rumoured for a long time. Also, when you complete the game you can't replay any fav missions as it over-writes checkpoints :( Check out the XIII forum here

Assmanposted - Dec, 22 2003 - 00:28
Even downloading this game from a warez site is a waste of time, so think twice before buying it...

AssmanKillaposted - Dec, 22 2003 - 01:31
What Assman said is WRONG. It IS worth the download. Buying is probably ok aswell :/

tony montanaposted - Dec, 22 2003 - 04:00
this game isn't even worth an average c grade. I dled disk images of this game and like stated above waist of time and bandwith. Very medeocre the voice cast is good thats about all it has going for it don't waist 40 bucks on this game don't even lay eyes on it.

Charles Pattersonposted - Dec, 22 2003 - 05:16
If you like this game because of the "cel" shading, you might want to find an old copy of Oni, which had it. It's a year or two old and very fun, IMO.

Crummyposted - Dec, 22 2003 - 07:06
Charles Patterson - Oni did not in fact have cell shading, simply cartoony styled models and levels. That didn't stop it from being a great game however :)

KHysiekposted - Dec, 22 2003 - 11:09
Well, I don't get how you could rate gfx 3/5. Overall using some absolute values it's not the beautiful like, for example, Uru, but it's not the case. It has very unique (esp. for 3D game) style, created in superb way. It's really 3D accelerated comix :).

Kposted - Dec, 22 2003 - 11:30
David Duchovny does the voice for XIII and his years as a washed-up actor is showing. That's probably why the game designers didn't give him more lines. Adam West (Batman!), however, does the voice of General Carrington and was as brilliant as ever.

Mona Saxposted - Dec, 22 2003 - 13:29
Cell-shaded graphics, eh? I guess a female nudity hack is out of the question then. No value for money in this game.

hardcore-manposted - Dec, 22 2003 - 13:34
Assman - o course u think this game is not worth downloading... u'd rather spend your internet badwidth d/loading pix of ass... becoz you are "the assman". ;-)

stupid and uncool game i hate it so fu**ing much

Sven Jorvikposted - Dec, 22 2003 - 19:16
I'm getting sick of game industries trying to rip-us off with their comic like game crap and call it good. How the hell is a good when a dying enemies take bullet to the head a screaming out a readable letters AAARGHHH! I was hoping the word F**K with be in it too.

ohnoposted - Dec, 22 2003 - 20:17
erm, wasn't Interstate 76 the first cel-shaded attempt? =)

Ianposted - Dec, 22 2003 - 23:15
Finished the game in the hardest difficulty in 2 days, loved every second of it. The boss battles are a little bit hard, though. Couldn`t beat any of the bosses without exploiting the AI(in the hardest difficulty).

ELDRITCHposted - Dec, 23 2003 - 00:23
What a splendiferous game – the best first person action game ever! Better than any UNREAL editions, HALF LIFE and other action games. I bet there will be second part of XIII, judging by the ending of the game. Took me 2 days to walk it through. I still miss it. An unforgettably joyful experience and gleeful elation. Highly recommended.

Kondorposted - Dec, 23 2003 - 10:51
THUMBS UP!! I really do not understand guys who hate this game...

mike smokeposted - Dec, 23 2003 - 10:56
the guys who hate the game obviously have some issues to work out when they see a good game.....anyway its a great game..if ya wanna try it if ya have a ps2 oe xbox rent it for them and is ya like it buy it for pc....cause they tryed to keep the game fairly the same on the platforms

yposted - Dec, 23 2003 - 16:15
btw, the comic book is Belgian, not French :P

Peterposted - Dec, 23 2003 - 17:04
The 1st cel-shaded game is fear Effect on the PSX The 2nd is Jet Set Radio on the DC. -----Some people like it, some hate it, here's why: If you've played FPS games since Wolfenstein 3D, you probably will think "been there, done that' even if it is cel-shaded. If you're relatively new to FPS games, then you'll probably enjoy it more. PS: "to be continued' endings suck.

Bartposted - Dec, 23 2003 - 17:50
Very nice game, I just totally enjoyed the comic-book storyline/effects/etc. Definitly worth the download, even buying it, it's really a complete game with everything in it. My favorite fps of the year!

Azarielposted - Dec, 23 2003 - 21:19
The concept of 2d cell shading rocks, but the game lacks freedom and diversity. It's linear to the bone, levels look alike, and the end is disappointing. Alltogether, the engine rocks, but the game itself sucks like hell. (bad story, sneaking with chairs with no footsteps heard.. ow come on, you get some cool throwing knives and crossbow as a sneak weapon, alas, the are most of the time not available.)

Azharposted - Dec, 23 2003 - 21:39
Hey, Could any 1 tell me if it with 32mb VGA.

darkpoizonposted - Dec, 24 2003 - 04:29
not sure about the 32mg gfx, depends on your card....also i only played this game on ps2 but i loved it. fps suck on consols but i have to get it for pc.

Wallyposted - Dec, 24 2003 - 13:27
Ya, it's a GREAT GAME!!!!!!! How could you people NOT like it. And I'm GREAT at playing tennis, but the problem is that I can't seem to hit the ball over the net... This game has more f**cking bugz in it than the Los Angeles County dump.

Hi! After the installation I tried to play, but at the beginning, at the coastline, the program has been closed and the following message displayed: ?int?Engine.Error.CDCopy? Do you know what to do? Please.

the graphics suck ass. they are not realistic enough. Sure reading a comic book is cool but playing in one? umm no. The death shots needed to be done better. Sometimes you can't even tell if you shot the guy. Its so unclear.

Luddposted - Jul, 29 2004 - 14:07
The cd copy error is almost impossible to get around. Downloading a crack for that will get you another error later in the game. The copy protection for XIII is one of the most advanced ever seen. My suggestion is to (as I had to do myself) buy the game if you really want it. Now it´s availible at low prices (about $15) in sweden so I guess it is so all over the world.

I think it's corny as hell to have a 'to be continued' message at the end - it's fine the way it ended up, except there's little closure and ending a game with the main character unarmed about to be captured by the guy I spent the entire game trying to find was a bit unsatisfying. other than that one can't complain, it's just another 1st person shooter and one knows what one is getting when one plays. I just think the final message 'buy our next game!' is a bit ho-hum...
