Dungeon Siege: Legends of Aranna
(hx) 11:42 AM CET - Dec,16 2003

Developed by Mad Doc Software (Gas Powered Games are busy working on Dungeon Siege II), Dungeon Siege: Legends of Aranna is stand alone expansion pack to Gas Powered Games's hit role-playing game. The game takes place in the same world as the original game and offers more of the same which made the original so popular along with a whole load of new features that are sure to please fans. Let's see what developers prepared for us.

The story is set only a generation after the events of the original game, so you will find some familiarity with the opening chapter of the story as you journey through a remote part of the Kingdom of Ehb. But things soon take a step into new territory when you are carried into a whole new land, the Island of the Utraeans. The game begins in a snowy town of Arhok, and you are the last in a long line of heroes who defended the town for centuries. Unfortunately, your parents disappeared on a mysterious adventure twenty years ago, and you are untested and unproven. This all changes, however, with the rising of an evil creature that thrives on darkness and has stolen a powerful artifact in an attempt to destroy the world...

Dungeon Siege: Legends of Aranna features a brand new campaign (along with the original Dungeon Siege campaign) complete with new spells (Diminution, Animal Rage, Zorkon's Bonecrusher, and the Orb of Fire), weapons and monsters, five new races (Droc, Hassat, Half Giants, Utraeans, Zaurask), new backpacks that increase the amount of items you can carry, improved control of your party (you can set up hot keys for each preferred weapon combination of your party, off-screen attack warning when a party member is under attack, etc.), ability to redistribute all the potions in your party and finally the Multiplayer Save system (every time you exit a multiplayer game, your journal state is saved).

In terms of gameplay, the expansion plays almost identical to its predecessor (review 92%). That means that you and your party members are still hacking away at monsters, picking up gold, manna, health and items. There are a few extras here to bring hard-core fans back, such as several new monsters and races. If I had to make one complaint about the game, it would be the level design, which is not quite as good as it was in the original game.

Overall, this is a great game. Not quite as awesome as the original when it came out, but it includes the original Dungeon Siege, plus you can play the original with all the new weapons and spells imported from the expansion. I'd say that $25 price tag isn't much for two games. If you like the original game, you will like this one because it's an extension of the first. If you never played the game, you should give it a try, especially when it comes with the original game. You can also try out this playable demo (254MB).

Minimum system requirements: Win98/ME/2k/XP (Win95 or WinNT are not supported), Pentium 333MHz or higher, 128MB RAM, DirectX 8.0 3D card with 8MB RAM, DirectX 8.0 sound card, 32x CDROM, 1.5GB free HDD space, 56k modem for multiplayer (1-4 players), broadband or LAN for 5+ players

snd: 5/5 - the same as the original, new voice acting, nicely done soundtrack
gfx: 4/5 - the same as the original, still richly textured environments, and solid lighting and shadow dynamics, camera angles still suck
playability: 5/5 - the same as the original - still pretty addictive, solid replay value, includes the original Dungeon Siege, a great new campaign complete with new spells, weapons and monsters, greatly improved multiplayer, the level design is good, but not quite as good as it was in the original game
genre: action fantasy RPG
release: November 2003
developer: Gas Powered Games / Mad Doc Software
publisher: Microsoft Game Studios
Very_good
Overall: 82%

can i be the first one to say that this game is light years away from the first one ? Yes, this one is much less boring than the original game, and that is saying very much in it's favor.

rootposted - Dec, 16 2003 - 17:04
I agree. I just finished it - it takes about 25 to 30 hours. The pace is more frantic = more bad guys to slaughter. Mages are more handy and group/teamwork is much improved. Less clicking too which is good ;)

stumpusposted - Dec, 16 2003 - 18:20
It's called natural progression guys :) The first game was way,way better than the 'usual' RPG genre, because it redefined it and made it playable to those that didn't want to mess with pen, paper and dice. So yes LoA is better than the original but the original was better than the rest (ie: BG/2) for making the bold step and spawning dozens of mods because of it's user friendliness.

meposted - Dec, 16 2003 - 19:04
holy fuck stumpus, calling dungeon siege a better RPG then baldurs gate??? you must be fucking kidding me, you can't be serious about that. BG is still the best RPG series out there.

xxposted - Dec, 16 2003 - 20:38
Baldurs gate was a complete bore with god damn stupid quest logging, story that went all over the place. NWN is by far the best thing out.. Dungeon Siege was great but this looks even better. NWN is 10x better than Baldurs Gate in nearly every single aspect. Baldurs Gate to me was a complete bore.

I agreed with ([email protected]) BG2: SoA, are perfectly layout in the terms of gameplay, graphics, blood, weapons, armors, storylines and quests. BG2: SoA, in it 2D 256 colors depth and details BG2: SoA is the real and fine all rounder RPG in it class.

I agree. Baldur's Gate II was far better in terms of single palyer quality than NWN or DS. Dungeon Siege was a great game in that you got addicted and then eventually at some point won and it was over. The game got boring after a while. NWN had a horribly weak single player storyline, no real party character interaction, something that really made BGII stand out and above anything else. Never winter nights is great fun to play online with your friends, it is great fun, but when it comes to single player, no RPG can beat Baldur's Gate II and its explansion (well, okay, one ties with it, Morrowind and its expansions are IMO as good as Baldur's gate, but I enjoyed it more because of my overactive imagination than most people do)

i liked this just as much as i did the first dungeon siege; i tried out NWN and BG but got bored w/ them quick - to me dungeon siege is the light yet a some what middle level of options and detail for an RPG that a general 1st person shooter (minimal indepth detail/configuration) would enjoy as a subnote - why does everyone post w/out giving atleast some decent info (name/email) - i understand the desire for a lack of spam, and the general lack of wanting to talk to tons of ppl randomly - but perhas the community of this site would increase if some of you would take the community of a site like this to heart.

Dungeon Siege, "way better"? For children, perhaps. In the time that Chris Taylor's auto-pilot snorefest has come and gone, we've had much richer and far more satisfying RPGs to play: the fantastic Arx Fatalis, the unparalleled Morrowind, and the great Gothic series. Dungeon Siege doesn't even belong at the table with these works of genius.

magaposted - Dec, 17 2003 - 07:07
not to mention the out-ot-this-world Planescape Torment. I compared DS:LOA to the first DS, tho. It's much improved.

hagenposted - Dec, 17 2003 - 09:36
Well, well, a humble question: Is DS a RPG or just an FSP in Iso-mode on a fantasy world? The quests are a joke and there is no "world" to come in touch with, only minions to hack and slay. And i don´t see much difference in seeking a bigger gun or seeking a bigger sword or spell. In DS there is NO singel quest u can solve by dialoge like in NWN, BG-Series or PT. For me, DS/DS:LOA simply is a Fantasy-Shooter. And even the visuals are more then out of date, the best RPG is Planscape Tourment, cause of the outstandig dialogs and storyline. DS:LOA is a nice game, fun to play, nice looks, easy to learn, easy to modify, but it´s no real RPG.

I'm glad that some people agree with my perspective... and for those that think that DS is better than BG... wel they aren't real RPG players.

???posted - Dec, 17 2003 - 14:05
More like FPS than real RPG... Not my type of game. And what goes BG2 vs. DS - BG2 is way better. And those that dosen't agree - probably just because in BG you have to think - not just fight.

stumpusposted - Dec, 17 2003 - 18:28
Give it a break Comments from me - [email protected] posted - 05:31 AM EST - Dec,17 2003 I'm glad that some people agree with my perspective... and for those that think that DS is better than BG... wel they aren't real RPG players. So have you played Deus Ex(yes it's an RPG of sorts),Morrowind (and all it's add-ons)for eg? If you have then so *have i* These are the FINEST examples of RPGs around. So don't patronise someone because they *don't* like BG BUT still have played RPGs...... Everyone is entitled to their opinion and BG with it's something like 200hours is just way,way OTT for people that work long hours and want a pick-up-and-play FUN RPG. DS has redefined the genre. Why do you think Black Isle went bust *if* BG was such a success? It's only for a small percentage of the market that want a FULL on BG type RPG, that's why more games like NWN,DS did so well.

youposted - Dec, 17 2003 - 22:07
I agree with me@me, but still think DS had way better user interface than BG and BG2. NWN is the only one I seen with a nicely done interface. Story wise, BG was a huge mess, like a big brain fart. But it does definitely have a nice engine. I'm looking forward to this DS addition.

meposted - Dec, 18 2003 - 11:36
@Stumpus, so deus ex and morrowind didn't take long to finish? And BIS went bust because those fucks at interplay are bust. And ok, you can think that ds is a better game then bg, but not a better rpg. calling ds a rpg is just bs, this is a plane hack@slash game like diablo(although diablo was a nice game) click and hope they die, while bg had a strategy. and where are those nice dialogs between your party members? this was a nice feature in bg. this is just a game like diabloII, kill everything, find the best items, kill more. and i can believe that people like this more than a story driven rpg. but then saying that ds is a better rpg then bg is just bs. but ill leave it at this, cause i can respect your opinion, but i just wanted to say mine

SunStealerposted - Dec, 19 2003 - 04:27
This game is OK, I guess, but why is there no powerful weapons..All I get during playing is "this & that of refuge"...Pretty weak, if you ask me. BTW..Is there any information `bout Diablo3?

posted - Jan, 11 2004 - 18:32
BG can't be better than dungeon siege and dungeon siege can't be better than BG. Its a matter of personal opinion as to which one is better. Which one is more popular is a different story.

G-Manposted - Jan, 12 2004 - 20:28
BG2 is better if your a person than likes to control every aspect of your party and use tactics instead of brute force. I enjoy the tactics of games rather than hack and slash. DS is more like a single player version of Diablo II multiplayer. Except the control you have is lessened. DS is just brainless slaughter.

posted - Jan, 13 2004 - 18:26
i have been turned off the multiplayer aspect of RPG games cause there is too much cheating there is no point in building a character up because lots of people just hack there multiplayer character. This is why i think the multiplayer aspects of DS and diablo1,2 suck ass. massive multiplayer online RPG games which store your character data are a better idea i think cause then its harder for people to cheat since they don't have access to there player file outside the game.

posted - Jan, 16 2004 - 00:05
ITS TOO BAD RPG MULTIPLAYER GAMES ARE NOT CHEAT RESISTANT. RPG MULIPLAYER GAMES ARE PROBABLY THE GAMES THAT SUFFER THEY WORST FROM CHEATERS. THE WHOLE GAME BECOMES FUCKED UP WHEN PEOPLE CHEAT IN RPG MULITPLAYER GAMES SO MUCH THAT ITS NOT EVEN WORTH PLAYING THATS WHY I DON'T PLAY RPG GAMES ANYMORE BECAUSE ITS BASICALLY JUST FULL OF CHEATING SCUM. ALMOST EVER GAME I ENTER HAS A CHEATER IN IT. THERE IS NO POINT TO EVEN DEVELOPING A CHARACTER IN RPG MULTIPLAYER GAMES BECAUSE YOU KNOW THEY WILL BE CHEATERS WHO HACK THEMSELVES UP. SO WHY PLAY IT THEN? WHATS THE CHALLENGE? WELL THE CHALLENGE BECOMES WHO HAS THE BEST CHEAT NOT WHO'S CHARACTER WAS DEVELOPED BETTER IN THE GAME. SO FUCK IT BECOMES MORE LIKE WHO CAN CODE THE BEST CHEAT.IS THIS GAME SUPPOSE TO BE A CHEAT WRITING CONTEST? NO! FUCK THEY SERIOUSLY NEED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE CHEATING. I THINK MASSIVE MULTIPLAYER ONLINE GAMES ARE THE SOLUTION POSSIBLY. IF THE DEVELOPER STORES YOUR CHARACTER DATA THEN ITS HARDER TO CHEAT. THATS THE MAIN REASON WHY I WOULD PAY TO PLAY RPG MASSIVE MULTIPLAYER ONLINE GAMES.LIKE I ALWAYS SAY IF YOUR GOING TO CHEAT TO MAKE YOUR CHARACTER BETTER WHY STOP THERE? EDIT THE GAME SO THAT ALL THE OTHER CHARACTERS DIE WHEN YOU JOIN A GAME! OR EDIT THE GAME SO YOU GET THE WINNING SCREEN WHEN YOU JOIN! THEN YOU DON'T EVEN HAVE TO PLAY TO WIN! YOUR SO FUCKING GREAT THEN LIKE A GOD! YOU WILL WIN EVERY TIME!

G-manposted - Jan, 16 2004 - 19:50
I agree Cheating n online RPGs has gotten out of control. There is no such thing as legit any more it is just i beat doesn't matter how i did it. Also the cheaters don't know what it is like spending a whole shit load of time on a character just to have his equipment stolen with a hack. I wish they would just play the game as it was meant to be.

Jacquelineposted - Jan, 25 2004 - 07:26
The original NWN campaign was somewhat dry compared to BG and BG2, but Shadows of Undrentide was as good as anything Bioware ever made prior to it, and Hordes of the Underdark is absolutely incredible, and would blow every single player RPG campaign ever made out of the water except for one thing: Bioware released Knights of the Old Republic for PC at the same time, which makes every one of the games mentioned above feel like crap. :( KotOR spoiled me, all future single player RPGs will be measured against it. Dungeon Siege is pretty shallow in comparison to anything Bioware has ever done. Heck, it's shallow compared to Blizzard's Diablo 2 (although it's obviously much prettier than Diablo.) Dungeon Siege is entertaining, but essentially it's an RPG on autopilot. It pretty much plays itself, and the character interaction is pretty much nonexistant.

Chrisposted - Jan, 29 2004 - 02:44
I agree with those people who say that DS is not really an RPG, it was this element that made me think it was a better game, no moving arrows around and casting spells in the ways that they work in the other rpgs, one guy standing at the back with healing winds and the rest of the part kicking the hell of things. More like warcraft III than BG and I think theres room for both!

VectorPupposted - Feb, 07 2004 - 02:10
No doubt the cheating has been out of control since the early days of Diablo 1. I remember struggling at times with trying to play a descent game with good folks while keeping the idiots at bay. Unfortunate as it is, EverQuest which I played on for about a year isn't much better. People still find a way to cheat, not too long ago there was a bug which allowed you to create as much coin as you like out of thin air. Among 100 other bugs that were exploited daily was a nice one that created level 60 players in matters of hours from a single broken quest. And even if all these bugs were fixed. There was still cheating going on in other forms. People with tons of resources and a few friends would twink their new chracter out with the best grear grab a few caster friends and kill things 40 levels over their heads faster then a normal character could drag down a blue con. So far I've yet to experience an on-line playing field thats been entirely even. I'm not really sure if it's really possible. Just a quick look from my point of view, for whatever it's worth.

Check out my e-mail...lol. There are some .mp3 domains available I believe...just very uncommon right now, and frankly a stupid idea at that... Oh, right...on topic. Well, Dungeon Siege is one of those "pick up and play" games. Its a hack-and-slash game, with SOME RPG-ish type elements (barely though). Its NOT an RPG, ok? Its like Diablo series...semi-RPG, but not quite. This would fit under the "Action/Adventure with RPG elements" hybrid category. Dues Ex...love it. Totally rocks and its not QUITE an RPG...since the only real RPG-ish stuff is the story and the customization, but its a blend of action/adventure and RPG-ish stuff...and it doesn't need to be a mindless hack-and-slash to do it either. There are those of us who have played better games, more in line with the definition of a "real" RPG, hell even ZELDA games are more RPGish then Dungeon Siege, and with more story...lol. Interplay and Black Isle Studios (BIS) failed because they were shut down by the parent company. The Baldur's Gate series and other games made by them haven't gotten them outta the financial troubles they had been having. However, that's beside the point. Think how many wonderful underrated games go below the typical gamer's radar and get swept under the carpet at the sales desk? Go to http://www.gamespy.com/articles/september03/25underrated/ for a list of them. So, what I'm trying to say is just cause a game doesn't sell well doesn't mean it isn't a quality game. Oh, as far as cheating is concerned. Have you EVER played ANY recent FPS game lately? They have CRAPLOADS of cheaters on almost every server (except the ones that are strictly monitored, which is rare). Hell, they even cheat in the DEMO of the game!!! Giving up playing cause of cheaters will only make them keep on doing it...they love that stuff...gives them a big ego trip. Well...cheating IS a problem, and no doubt it always will be, unless game developers can be smart and implement some "self administration" stuff. For example, usually the hosts of a game can kick and ban players from their server (same in Dungeon Siege, which is a nice touch), and in Medal of Honor, you can call votes to change game options and kick cheaters, although you DO need a majority vote...and that's if the host isn't around. Cheating in games corresponds to cheating in life. How many times have you seen someone cheat on a test or something? Best thing to do is let them ruin it for themselves, and don't play with them, period. In Diablo you can set up passworded games, btw. Oh, and they've done some decent stuff with Diablo 2 and trying to control cheating. Especially with the player files saved on the b.net servers and all. Battle.net (b.net) is FREE...and basically will be free as long as Blizzard keeps it that way. Easy multiplayer on battle.net is one of the main reasons for the success of Diablo and such. How fun is Diablo or Diablo 2 offline? Yeah...its a mind-numbing clickfest of course, BUT in multiplayer everything suddenly becomes just a bit more fun. 20 years ago, there were HARDLY any PC games with multiplayer, let alone FREE multiplayer, OR editors, OR modability, or anything. BE DAMN THANKFUL that the developers of games actually bother to include this stuff in their games. If you don't like cheating, just do like the other mature people and just don't play with the cheaters. If they want to join, refuse, kick, or ban them. If they persist you can block their ip with your firewall, heck, you can even just password the damn game and only play with friends. I don't cheat. I've played around with some hacks and crap, offline....after beating the game. Its boring, quite frankly. Just a curiousity, is all. The best thing for a cheater is to irritate someone online and drive them to never play that game again. That makes them REALLY happy. So instead of whining, go get some FRIENDS and game with them, k? Later...and sry for the uber-long post but some thins just gotta be said
