TRON 2.0 (hx) 07:00 AM CEST - Sep,02 2003
Have you ever dreamed of fighting with a TRON disc...or engaging in a light cycle duel. Well in this game you do that and more. TRON 2.0 is a cyber-punk first-person shooter that takes place in present day, approximately 20 years after the events of the film released 20 years ago. ENCOM programmer Alan Bradley has finally managed to replicate the technology that digitizes human beings. The key is Ma3a, a sophisticated AI (artificial intelligence) program advanced enough to hold a person's full genetic information and to restore it safely to the physical world. With Bradley's company about to be taken over, he disappears - suddenly and mysteriously of course. In the game, you play the role of Jet Bradley, son of ENCOM programmer Alan Bradley, who finds himself transported into the digital realm. Once inside the computer your adventure begins and the story starts to take place.
TRON 2.0 features over 30 levels where you will race on light cycles, battle corruption both inside and outside of the computer world, and explore locations including the Internet Hub, Firewall, Corrupted Server and Light Cycle Game Grid. In the exploratory portions, the pay-off to looking in archive bins are emails, permission codes and upgrades (subroutines) to your operating system. They can get infected and fragmented so a lot of the game is played while you’re disinfecting these subroutines. Besides all the internal emails, you've got enemies who're are named ICP Programs (Intrusion Countermeasure Programs), Corrupted Programs, the Kernel, Bits, Bytes, and every other computer related name you can think of. There's also small and simple RPG element running through TRON 2.0 and it's imprinted on your disc and the version of your software. As the game progresses you gain versions through completing tasks and picking up little golden "build notes" which allow you to "upgrade" yourself in a style similar to No One Lives Forever 2, allowing you to increase your base health, energy, weapon efficiency, transfer rate, and processor.
You start the game with your Disk Primitive, the original weapon from the original TRON movie. You basically just aim and throw it at your enemies, then wait for it to bounce back to you in a boomerang-like fashion. You can use the disc to block as well as throwing it, and if you have the Power Block subroutine, it becomes a devastating weapon unto itself. But the creators of TRON 2.0 have expanded the weapons also known as "primitives" - that can be modified by subroutines to have a total of three attacks each. Each of these weapons comes from the different factions in the game and so is not as out of place as you would think. In total, there are four main weapons - already mentioned disc which is native to Jet and ICP, the Rod is native to light cycle racers, the Ball is native to the forces of corruption, and the Mesh is native to the DataWraiths. In addition to the basic disc, there is also the Sequencer disk, which can throw up to four discs rapid-fire, and the Cluster disk, which acts as a flying fragment bomb. The Rod is a cattle prod-like device, and can be modified into an energy cannon or sniper weapon. The Ball is a grenade that can be modified into the Ball Launcher, or Drunken Dims, which is like a Ball Launcher on steroids. The Mesh is an energy blaster that can be modified into an energy claw and the Prankster Bit, which is the BFG of TRON 2.0.
TRON 2.0 also contains a number of light cycle races (a completely separate mini-game), which can be played over a LAN between up to 8 players. The other two multiplayer modes revolve around the disc arena match seen in the film. The disc game is entertaining, but it's the equivalent of deathmatch to any other game. These matches can be somewhat amusing for a time, but probably won't keep most gamers interested for too long.
Overall, TRON 2.0 strays a bit from the conventional FPS by incorporating
some fundamentally RPG elements into the mix and contains all the elements that
you’ve come to expect, even frustrating jumping puzzles. Some of the levels are
very large and have a great sense of depth. You'll notice
that the developers paid a lot attention to detail from the visuals, to having
professional voice actors (from the original TRON movie). There is also a
lot of humor in the game so if you’re a computer geek like me you’ll get a lot
of good laughs out of this game. TRON 2.0 is definitely worth buying, especially
if you liked the original movie. For more info download both
SP Demo
(203MB) and MP
Demo (160MB), and visit the official
TRON 2.0 homepage.

Lokam Turner | posted - Sep, 03 2003 - 00:49 | i thought it was a great game
i picked it up thursday and finished it after 2 days of 10 hours and a 4 hour finish up on monday; so for 24hours i thought it was a bit on the short side, but the 24 hours were wonderful (except when your playing the light cycles and you have derezzed 2 of the other 3 players and you think left but turn right and do'h...) but still, it was great fun; watched the dvd of tron in the middle of playing one night - all and all a tron weekend |

Tron 2.0 expands the visuals and story of the movie like no other movie based game I´ve played before. You got ot play it on a video card with DirectX 8.1 pixel shaders to really enjoy it. There´s a "screen glow" effect which is one of the best and original use of pixel shaders i´ve seen. |

After seeing HL2 previews, its hard to get excited about games out at the moment, but this game kept me captivated for the whole way through - i could stop playing :) Impressive graphics (especially the glow technology), great sound and alot of fun to play. |

apotheosis | posted - Sep, 03 2003 - 23:01 | Agree with the review and the comments. I was totally hooked on this film as a kid, and the game's designers did an outstanding job maintaining the look, feel, and sound of the movie. Even the music is well done - lots of Wendy Carlos' original soundtrack, with a modern twist.
The storyline was paced well; not quite groundbreaking, but not boring either. The script manages to incorporate plenty of computer jargon and concepts for atmosphere, without being obnoxious about it.
Some of the platform-jumping puzzles annoyed the hell outta me, but that was just a minor gripe. Overall, it's everything I hoped it would be, and then some. |

"...128 megabytes of ram, capable of 16-bit processing. I challenge you to find a better system."
"Oh yeah, the tanks are read only ;)"
In the 'city' - you can get a 'warez' copy of a program by talking to some female program around some corner
The racing grid death comments - 'Newbie!'
Upon sight the ICPs and other programs say... 'Scuzzy (SCSI comes to mind) Warez'.
Various program-to-program dialogs.
A bit of irony in the emails...
You have to pay attention and get involved in the game to catch ALL the subtle jokes - but nobody's perfect.
It helps to know a bit about computers in the first place to understand alot of the jargon and other terms, such as the difference between high-level and low-level compilers. |

Dave Jones | posted - Jan, 15 2004 - 04:17 | Tron 2 has great graphics but the sound
is a let down it is only bleeps and
computer noises because I have onboard sound. Vietcong supposedly had troublesome copy protection but disc 1 of tron 2 original cd version had a crc error at 31% of the installation and it is impossible to uninstall the game. |

We are judging the actual game here not the title of it. As for the title it is based of the original movie tron, in the 1980s, which also explains the cartoony textures, but it adds a interesting touch from the boring old SOF games and alike. XIII was another which used the same sort of cartoon texturing, made the game interesting. |
