Colin McRae Rally 3|
(hx) 07:00 AM CEST - Aug,03 2003
Colin McRae Rally 3 (CMR3) made its debut on the Xbox and PS2 consoles a couple months ago, and now the PC version is finally here. The previous two Codemasters' Colin McRae games provided some of the best rallying action around. Was the CMR3 worth the wait?
The game features two game modes - Championship and Stages. In the Championship mode you play the role of Colin McRae, world famous rally driver, with the help of your AI navigator Nicky Grist. You take control of Colin McRae's Ford Focus RS and attempt to become the best rally driver in the world. The championship will take you through Australia, Spain, Finland, UK, USA, Sweden, Greece, and Japan. Each country has seven courses, each one with it's own landscape, whether it be gravel, snow, tarmac, or wet. It may snow in Sweden or rain in Japan (the rain effect demonstrated in the Japanese stages looks absolutely stunning). Of course, there's competition from other cars and drivers, but that's what makes it all so entertaining. At the end of the eight rallies, the driver with the most points wins the World Rally Championship.Sadly the championship mode can be played only from behind the wheel of McRae's Ford Focus.
The Stages mode lets you race on any of the tracks in any car of your choice against up to four players (split-screen on the same PC), with the person setting the fastest time on each stage being the winner. Fortunately, in this mode you aren't restricted to just using the Focus RS as in the Championship mode.
CMR3 features over 15 rally cars including the Ford Focus RS WRC, Ford Puma Rally, Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 7, Subaru Impreza 22B Sti, Lancia 037, Fiat Punto Super 1600, Citroen Xsara Kit Car, Citroen Saxo Kit Car,the MG ZR Rally Car and even a tank as bonus. Of course, each car handles uniquely, some are more skiddish, while others seem tight.
CMR3 also supports full damage modeling. That means the cars are fully deformable, everything from your bumper swinging off to broken glass as you hit a tree sideways. Any damage you inflict upon your car will get carried over into the next stage, and can only be fixed one you get to one of the service points. Needless to say that your car is a mess after just twelve hours of racing. However I would say the damage model is still not completely believable.
I've played it hard for a week to find what's really changed since CMR2. No doubt, CMR3 provides some improvements in comparison with CMR2. The damage is one of the many excellent things about this game alongside the beautiful graphics. Finally, I can't really say much about the force feedback support since I didn't spend sufficient time testing the game out with a wheel. I did mostly play it on the keyboard.
However there's no LAN/Internet multiplayer mode, there's only Colin's old Focus in Championship mode, there's no setup for any car when driving in stage mode, and also car behaviour model is rather step backward. That doesn't mean that CMR3 is not bad game, only I expected a little bit more :(
Overall, CMR3 is still one of the best rally simulator for the PC on the
market, especially for casual gamers, but I cannot give this game more than 75%
Because if I gave this game 90%, then CMR2 should have gotten at least 120% :)
Minimum: Pentium III or Athlon at 750MHz, 128MB RAM, Supported 32MB Graphics Card*, DirectX 9 Compatible Sound Card, 3.5Gb Hard Disk Space (3Gb for game, 500Mb free after installation), DirectX 9 installed
Recommended: Pentium 3/4 or Athlon at 1.4GHz, 512MB RAM, Supported 64MB Graphics Card*, DirectX 9 Compatible Sound Card, 3.5Gb Hard Disk Space (3Gb for game, 500Mb free after installation), DirectX 9 installed
*Supported Graphics Cards: ATI Radeon 8500LE, 8500, 9000 Pro, 9500 Pro, 9700 Pro, Matrox Parhelia, nVidia nForce 1 & 2, GeForce, GeForce 2, GeForce 3, GeForce 4, SiS Xabre 400
The following graphics cards are NOT supported: Radeon 7200, 7500, Rage, Voodoo 4, Voodoo 5, Matrox G400, Matrox G440, TNT2, All 16-bit graphics cards
Note: If you want to play multiplayer (split-screen), just make sure you have another game controller besides a keyboard hooked up to your PC.
snd: 4/5 - the engine sounds good, excellent voice recording of Nicky Grist, some little bugs (get the latest drivers!)
gfx: 4/5 -
looks good enough, well modeled cars, colorful and authentic landscapes, full damage modeling, the car reacts to bumps, water, camera views are from inside the cockpit/on the hood/behind the vehicle, damage model is still not completely believable
playability: 4/5 -
fun to play, 56 stages in over 8 countries, over 15 cars, only 2 modes + the championship mode can be played only from behind the wheel of McRae's Ford Focus, cars slide way too much, no multiplayer through LAN/Internet, interface sucks, disabled manual repair system

|It was not what i was waiting for......
Really sux, Microsoft RalliCHallenge is better than this. Maybe because next year we will have Colin MCRae4 and this was only a "kill time to wait" to the next?|

|I guess these reviews were written beforehand and posted by an automated system, look the last review was also posted at 1AM... hrm...
And I liked the PS2 version of CMR3, it was already quite outdated when the NTSC version arrived, I didn't bother looking it again on the PC version... |

Well, I really dont like this game but Ive really liked the GFX and damage model. dunno what you guys are talking about bad gfx :?:
But anywayz, race against the clock is boring as hell ;)|

|Well it's better than Rallisport Challenge, but it's worse than CMR2.
The graphics are superb, the control is annoying, allthough Rallisport has better graphics, think about it, Rallisport doesn't have true tracks or championships.
Even so I think the best rally game ever made is Mobil 1 Rally Championship, try it, awesome graphics, good control, reality, with 20 minutes tracks, not just 3-6 minutes, this is not real|

|CMR3 has good graphics but not good car control compared to ver 2.0.|
|MR3@review.com||posted - Aug, 05 2003 - 05:46|
|and what happened to the arcade mode racing? it's no fun racing against people you can't see.|
|firstname.lastname@example.org||posted - Aug, 06 2003 - 04:58|
|CMR3 is NOT better than Rallysport Championship - the physics and road-contact are always a weakness, but CMR3 is the greatest bullsh*t ever. even the gfx in Rallysport is more crispy (released half year ago!). mass console entertainment in few words. CMR goes the same way as NFS did...|

|This doesn't compare to wrc2 on ps2. now thats an awesome game.
ps. MR3 the point of rally is to beat the course and the time, can't drive to ur best with others on the road!
(but its fun for 2 player)|

saying im a "santemonical son of a bitch" because i think this game sucks is pretty ridiculous. i guess your the opposite of a "santemonical son of a bitch" because you like the game then eh? or wait maybe everyone who thinks this game sucks wearing dippers like 2 year old babies? yeah i think thats so true. it has to be.|

|CMRR 3 has made a step backwards, you can't choose weather coniditions or set up your car in the free play mode.
Also they crippled the carrer mode by only allowing you to drive the ford fuckus
DON'T BUY THIS GAME! GET CMRR 2 OR SOMETHING ELSE
It's rushed out and totally castrated in comparison to CMRR 2|
|Dave||posted - Aug, 29 2003 - 09:58|
|I bought CMR2 a couple of months ago, and have been absolutely addicted ever since. Using manual gears, the top-of-the-windscreen camera view and a force feedback wheel, it seems as though you're driving a real car. The subtlety of the control, the scenery, the sound, the lighting all make it a great experience to play this game. However, the other day I made the expensive mistake of buying CMR3. What on earth were they thinking? Even after installing the Codemasters patch, the force feedback is hardly noticeable, and you seem no longer to be connected to the car and the road. The graphics aren't as nice as CMR2. What happened to the sound? Basically, it's just a load of rubbish, and I shall continue enjoying CMR2.|
|johnny||posted - Sep, 11 2003 - 05:48|
|cmr3 is graphically way backwards from rallisport challenge, even in physics its not up to nothing, cmr2 was better but then again, rally masters was the best at least in physics, and what about the choice of weather and day/night and everything, tracks are boring, who gives a sh* if they are real?|
|jack||posted - Sep, 27 2003 - 22:04|
|I really liked this game, ok cmr 2 was better but still its a damn fun game... i just wish you could go in championship mode with another car than the god damned focus... i really hate this car!!!|
