Red Faction 2|
(hx) 12:46 AM CEST - May,12 2003
Red Faction 2 is a sequel to 2001's popular sci-fi first-person shooter developed by Volition (these guys are behind the classic Descent series, Summoner and FreeSpace 2). In Red Faction 2, you assume the role of Alias, a demolitions expert and member of a squad of nano-enhanced super-soldiers - Molov, Repta, Shrike, Tangier, and Quill. The story unfolds with your team working with the Red Faction movement towards over-throwing a tyrannical Saddam-look like dictator named Victor Sopot. His corrupt rule and a relentless war of unification with the United Republic has left the Commonwealth bloodied and impoverished. As distant battles rage, sewage taints Sopot City's rivers, pollution smudges the sky, and wretched citizens huddle in crumbling ruins. The Public Information Building, built by the dictator as a tribute to himself, broadcasts lies about Sopot's bravery and the Commonwealth's military victories. Essentially you begin playing in the middle of an uprising and get swept in the plot from there. You have to battle through diverse environments using vehicles, an arsenal of specialized weapons, and explosives in a mission to overthrow the government. Defeat Sopot and restore the honor of the Commonwealth.
Red Faction 2 features 11 missions (~44 levels), 14 specialized weapons (pistol, submachine gun, shotgun, assault rifle, nanotech individual combat weapon, grenade launcher, enhanced machine gun, magnetic railgun, silenced machine gun, heavy suppression machine gun, precision sniper rifle, sniper rifle, WASP, Antipersonnel weapon), all-new inventory of useful items (health kits, night vision goggles, numerous grenades and more), four varied vehicles in combat - a tank, a hover flyer, a submarine, and a battle armor (an assault mech bristling with Gatling guns and missiles) to control - though they are just an extension of the run and gun modes, multiple boss battles, revamped Geo-Mod engine and local botmatch mode.
Is Red Faction 2 good game? Well, strongly depends what you expect. I would say Red Faction 2 is good straight forward arcade shooter where you can just cause as much carnage and destruction as possible and not care about too much else. If you like more thinking and less action, you probably won't like this game. The Geo-Mod technology in this game, which allows you to completely alter and destroy the environment in real-time, is much more prominent than in the first one. There's a lot more things to blow up, shatter, break through, even most of the puzzles come down to shooting a few walls to get to a desired location. To make the game a bit more entertaining, there are moments during the game where you must take control of vehicles. While the battle armor and the mini-sub are full controllable vehicles, the tank and hover flyer will get you into the role of the gunner, so the game runs on rails while you blow up everything in sight.
Overall, the single player portion of the game is pretty short, you can expect to get through the campaign in approximately 8-10 hours (normal difficulty setting). What about multiplayer? Believe me or not, Red Faction 2 doesn't have a LAN multiplayer mode. Instead, Red Faction II does offer a fully featured botmatch mode (local only) with 8 different botmatch game types. I'm pretty sure that not including multiplayer was the worst decision they could have possibly made, especially after such a successful first Red Faction game where people liked multiplayer component.. In my opinion, there is no excuse for that, and no excuse for not having TCP/IP online play in a PC FPS. Besides, I don't think many people will enjoy the botmatch mode. The bots are somewhat fun but we want to play via net! Needless to say I was looking for more from Red Faction 2 than what was delivered.
snd: 4/5 - fairly well done, environmental noises and people are all solid, voice acting is inconsistent
gfx: 3/5 -
dated = same as Red Faction 1, revamped Geo-Mod engine, low-res, bland, washed textures, some pretty nice explosions
playability: 3/5 -
non-stop all out action, mediocre PS2 port, pretty linear&short (~ 8-10 hours), simple controls&playability, no real multiplayer (only local botmatch - how lame...), you cannot save anywhere, very low replay value

|this game has far less geo-mod than the first one, in RF1 you could start blowing up the ground nearly anywhere and tunnel to china - in RF2 you can only blow up what you are allowed to at various places in the game which was a complete step back in my opinion.|

|i liked "blowing up the ground nearly anywhere and tunnel to china" that was the only thing RF1 brought 2 gaming. Pity other developers havent used the tech :(|

|the only reason the first one made "any" money was simply the destructable environment, after that it was a bore and nobody played it online. The new RF2 looks the same, boring. Obviously THQ has lots of money, but we can be thankful they have the publishing rights to S.T.A.L.K.E.R http://www.stalker-game.com|

|RED FACTION 2 IS ACTUALLY WORSE THAN RED FACTION 1.
the geo-mod was toned down so much its basically not even there.
story line is worse. umm no MULTIPLAYER???????
who makes a game with no MULTIPLAYER THESE DAYS? are they on SOME TYPE OF ILLEGAL SUBSTANCE????
GRAPHICS ARE OK NO IMPROVEMENT.
NOT ENOUGH SWEARING AND VIOLENT CONTENT.
i know this may sound like i like violence but it plays like buggs bunny. I WANT A FPS TO BE AN FPS NOT A TV COMMERCIAL.
THE WEAPONS DID NOT GET BETTER.
BASICALLY IT SEEMS LIKE THEY DECIDED TO TAKE RED FACTION 1 MAKE SOME NEW LEVELS GET RID OF THE GEO-MOD tone down the story and reship it calling it "RED FACTION 2" . WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON .
OK THAT WAS THE "INTRODUCTION" know the real potty pants will be DEScribED.
ok lets talk about the guns.
Well they look bad graphics wise. IF you can't admire your gun after wiping the enemy down they where is the fun right? you agree? NO?.
Weapons are not powerfull enough you can't blow up area's . you can only blow up a couple guys.
OK you like that ? yeah? NO? what?
lets move to character models . Well i think the eyes but again no IMPROVEMENT.
there is no MAXIMUM OBTAINABLE LEVEL IF LIFE. you can always improve did they? ummm no. if you can't see your character doing the funky taunts after defeat the bad guys then where da fun go? where? it goo vaaaaa vooooooooom right passed that haaaa loooww head.
KNOW ITS time for the funkathon feature.
whats that mean? i have no clue. i could not feel the power in this game it was like an steak but it was like burn bad real bad.
all the monsters are humaniod like. umm yeah lets change the face and call it a monster yeah cool idea eh?
the land was stupid . no dirt. what the hell kind of game has no dirt???? if you can't dig in the ground pits and stuff then whats the geo-mod for looking pretty in the pink dress> huh?
no the > is not a type o.
i did not like the carpets in the game!
i mean if can't even get that right then why play the demo WHY?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

|RF2... Now, I know why it's cheaper than the first. RedFaction 1 is soo much better in mostly everyways than RF2. Only thing I find a bit better is you got more weapons in RF2 but to what end? Like lots of ppl said, you can't even blow up sheetz. The Geo-Mod in RF2 is lame, close to not present at all. Other good thing in RF2, Lance Henrikson's participation as Molov. You can't save anywhere in the game which this, IS THE MAIN REASON I DON'T APPRECIATE THIS GAME. The game is short too, shorter than the first. No multiplayer in it as well..blah RF2 won't stay installed for long! S.T.A.L.K.E.R. should be better, and it'd better be or else, adios THQ! So now, I'm gonna play some Postal 2 instead cuz this one is just AMAZING IN EVERY WAYS!|

|It's a complete console to PC conversion with nothing new added for the PC version. I hope it's not a sign of things to come for the PC.|
|Tom||posted - May, 14 2003 - 14:22|
|No a sign of things to come is the c0cksuckers at ATI and Nvidia who are going to split the PC market even "more" where games are gonna run better on Nvidia or ATI. If both companies had brains they would develop together and just compete on the speed of their product. Unfortunately both companies are too stupid to do this and that's why we will have games that take advantage of Nvidia over ATI or the other way around. We got review sites like NvNews but all they are is a middle-man seller of NVidia goods run by a few kids from school. They are useless. That's why I come to this site, though some reviews are questionable, this guy just posts the news and doesn't taint it or specially select what he wants his visitors to see. But just wait and see, market division for PC is coming, stupid ass idea, but look who calls the shots...|
|hx||posted - May, 14 2003 - 16:12|
|tom: Thanks, well we are trying to be very independent. I hope we do well with it.|
Of course, the reviews are questionable. I have my own opinion and taste...Some readers agree with my opinions; others disagree.:)I think it's pretty ok. Only I don't like dirty words here. Maybe I’m getting old...
And Nnvidia and ATI, yeah they indeed suck. How you said, "If both companies had brains they would develop together..",but that's another story.
I would like to review hardware too, especially CPU's & VideoCard. Honestly, some benchmarks even at THG are weird.
Unfortunately I cannot afford to buy another test PCs and cards :) Maybe sometime in future...

|I was gonna do a big reply to ya, but just to say that you do run a fair and honest site without all the BS and marketing that sites like nVnews and as such, I'll be continuing to come to your site for all my industry news. =)Sorry for my swearing Hx.. my bad.|

|I was sooooo dissapointed.. really liked RF1, spent many hours on it. RF2 was... well..stupid. To add to what other people said, the brain-dead saves drove me mad (why change it?). I think they would have been better not to release it this way, as now no-one will ever buy a RF3.|
|joshua||posted - May, 25 2003 - 06:57|

|Dave||posted - Jan, 26 2004 - 16:50|
|How can you all sit there and slate a genius of a game, the 2nd is in every way superior to the first except for the GEO-MOD.|
|The_Bobcat||posted - Apr, 20 2004 - 08:37|
|I'd give it a 5 or 6 outta 10, its got some cool gameplay but not what you would expect for a sequel to the original RF. I mean it was so cool you'd think this one would be awesome but its really like one of the many bad console-PC game conversions that lack the features PC gamers are used to like user save points, customizable controls heck even real cheats for when were bored. The graphics were a bit washed too it hought even though the weapons were nice and explosions entertaining. Overall the lack of multiplayer to use all that nice hardware just polishes the fun off of it and leaves u pissed that you cant get all the weapons from the start like with 'bighugmug' I WANT MY PRECISION!!!|
