Vietcong was made by a small developer in the Czech Republic by the name of Pterodon in conjunction with Illusion Softworks, the guys behind the Hidden and Dangerous series and the other surprise hit, Mafia. Released six months ago, Mafia received widespread acclaim for its highly authentic and atmospheric presentation and now Vietcong makes a similar kind of effort. It is just like Vietnam, or at least the way they portray it in the movies.
Vietcong is a first person shooter with tactical elements set during the Vietnam War (1964 - 1972). You are a sergeant Steve R. Hawkins of the US Army Special Forces and have been assigned to serve in the fictitious A-216 team based at the Nui Pek camp in the Central Highlands of Vietnam near the Cambodian border. The squad you lead consist of five other men: a radioman, machine gunner, pointman, an engineer, and spectacled medic who will keep you alive during missions. As team leader, you issue orders to the other soldiers to determine the way in which your missions will proceed. For instance, it's probably a good idea to tell your men to hold when you start laying out coordinates for artillery fire :)
The game contains a solid single-player campaign (over 20 missions) which will take a veteran player 8-10 hours to complete, and a beginner considerably longer. During the single player campaign Hawkins either works alone or with a squad of teammates to accomplish the various missions in the jungles. The jungle is full of simple but deadly traps that are hard to notice with an inexperienced eye, so you have to watch and listen to your point man. Moving through the jungle quickly will mean running the risk of hitting these snares, but moving too cautiously will often give the enemy an advantage. The mission goals are somewhat forgiving in how you should accomplish them, so every once in a while you will have no clue what to do.
For example, you must go down into the VC tunnels alone armed with a silenced pistol and a brick of C4 to seal off the tunnel. The tunnel scenes in this game remind me of old dungeon games with those mazes kinda long and boring. Fortunately, there are also a medley of escort missions and covert operations missions, which are much more interesting.
Vietcong features a large number of accurately modeled weapons. For the US, M1 Garand with Sniper Scope, M3 Grease Gun, Thompson submachinegun, M1 Carbine, Remington 870, Colt M1911 A1, M60, Winchester 70 (excellent hunting and sniper rifle), and the M79 40mm Grenade Launcher. The Vietcong weapons include the Mosin-Nagant, SVD Drugonov, SKS Simonov , a .38 revolver, the 7.7mm Tokarev TT 40, the Makarov, RPD-Degtarev, PPSh-41 Spaign, PPS-43, and old good Kalashnikov AK-47. Each gun has its own unique firing style and recoil, and many can be switched from fully automatic to burst fire or even single-fire mode for accuracy. Hand grenades and C4 explosive charges are also available.
The Multiplayer mode offers some decent replay value, as there are a number of different maps and game types you can choose from. There are the usual DM, Team DM and Capture the Flag modes, as well as Assault Team Game (an objective based mission set with goals like "protect the pilot"), Last Man Standing, Real War, and even Co-Op where players can team up against packs of AI-controlled enemies.
Vietcong is by far a much better game than average. The game takes some of the best new trends of first-person shooting and combines them with the Vietnam War to create a truly excellent and immersive first-person experience. Unfortunately the safe disk protection kills performance for a lot of people, sometimes cutting their frame rates in half. Thankfully,
the US patch v1.01
) takes care of that problem so be sure to grab it when you buy the
game. You can also download this
(71MB) / SP demo
and visit Vietcong
Minimum System Requirements:Intel Pentium III processor 500MHz, 128MB RAM, 800MB HDD space, DirectX 8.1-compatible 3D accelerator with 32MB RAM, DirectX 8.1-compatible sound card, CD-ROM 8x
snd: 4/5 - awesome jungle ambient sounds, some great weapon effects, voice acting ranges from top notch to woefully poor, musical soundtrack carries the tunes of one Jimi Hendrix, 5.1 EAX support
gfx: 3/5 -
solid, immersive jungle environments, looks good at higher resolutions, weapon models look authentic, models look terrible when they talk, some clipping issues
playability: 4/5 -
exciting combat, quick fight mode (on maps you unlock as you progress through the campaign), four difficulty levels, challenging enemy AI, limited save system, various MP modes, inclined to crashes and disconnects, lack of innovative elements, the tunnels levels were boring and way to long, CD-copy protection killing your framerate, bugs and glitches (though the first patch seems to have resolved most of them)

vietcong has superb audio which has alot of impact on the action. cant say i have ever played a game where i felt like i was actually there. be prepared sonny, you will reach climax before your heart races you down the jungle!|

|good game but there are like 10-20 servers. I have the game and I never been more disappointed in how little servers there are. Another thing. There are no driveable vehicles, no heavy guns at all, like turrets. The game has nice graphics but doesn't introduce anything new. It's just another shooter with decent graphics.|

|A pleasure to read your reviews hx! I just picked up two games for $29.99 each (R63 : Raven Shield and C&C Generals) at my local Futureshop! So I'll have to put off this interesting title.|

|This game was a lot of fun. At first I thought it was going to suck though. I tried that single mission in the jungle and damn, I didn't seem like I could hit (kill) anyone from and great distance. But after playing around, and playing the other missions it was great. To bad the server seletion is limited right now for MP. Maybe it'll pick up some...|

|Look its Mohamed Saeed Al-Sahhaf!! Whoohooo. Anyways….Somebody knows nothing about 'real' war but certainly wants to act (shall we say) like they’re all that. My little ignorant un'amerikan' friend, go educate yourself and quit acting like you have a clue of what you speak of. You're impressing no one. And another thing…’Delta Hawk’ ?!?! Daaaa…lol. You can’t even get a simple name of a game straight yet you wanna come in here trying to act like you know about anything else? You’re a dumbass; but you DO know that don’t ya?|
|BigDaddy||posted - May, 03 2003 - 13:54|
|Hey n00b 8yr... it's great that you can use the internet and all, but don't post comments unless you actually BOUGHT THE GAME... playing the demo doesn't count. Also to the anti-american-kn0b, why don't you go read up on the Vietnam war before commenting on it... More VC were killed than US Soliders. Technicially the US didn't lose; they made a treaty and withdrew. The US didn't win clearly because of political intervention and a number of other reasons. Geez... everyone wants to post their opinion no matter how stupid & uneducated it is.|
|Stumpus||posted - May, 03 2003 - 15:48|
|Erm that's the idea of games (crap name)Amerikan soldier suc.
But if you would put your console down and buy "Operation Flashpoint GOTY", you would find that you can play 3 campaigns 1)for the USA 2)for the Russians *against* the USA 3)The Resistance OK
Back on topic:
I liked the demo -played smooth as hell 1600x1200 x2AA (surprised with my XP2000 GF4TI4600 combo) The 'depth of field' was very well implemented, the *only* problem i had was it was just damn tooo short to make an honest judgement of how the full SP game will be? I'm to wary of a 'Blackhawk Down' 8hour disappointment.|
|Tom||posted - May, 03 2003 - 16:47|
|Well I played the demo Strogge but in retail I have not seen this yet. Sorry. The game is great now with my 9700, but there are still not many servers. Still this game is average, imo.|
|Losty||posted - May, 05 2003 - 01:37|
|hmmmmm i m not un american or anything..

|This is wierd, every game on this site usually has a generic score, 79 is popular in this case. Strange....|
|Pope John Paul||posted - May, 05 2003 - 07:22|
|Hey Jesus, i knew you existed!!! but didn't know you were into gaming as well... kool. .........i just ignore the scoring on this site & only read the guys comments... i bet he would give a Barbie game 70%+. :D|
|King Andy||posted - May, 05 2003 - 08:00|
|It's really good game. Sound and views are great.Unfortunately, the player could not act as VC in single player mode, that's the weakness.|
|ViriiK||posted - May, 05 2003 - 08:47|
|Can he be a little stupid? Almost 3 million soldiers were sent to vietnam over a 10 year period. At most 60,000 soldiers were killed while over 3 million vietnamese were killed in the conflict (North and South). The South were fighting for their freedom when the North were fighting for communism supported by the Chinese and USSR.|

|Ineffigy||posted - Dec, 11 2003 - 00:46|
|Actually, I would probably consider Vietnam a loss. While it technically was a strategic withdrawl and we still did not accomplish our goal, stopping communism. Anyways, you should comment on the play of the game and not the fact that every game you play has Americans as heros. I think there is a game where you can be a muslim freedom fighter against the Isreali army. I just don't understand why people complain so, if you don't like somthing, go make it better!|

|Vietcong is a great game inspired in what really happened in Nam near Cambodian border and sometimes even in Cambodia. There were SF soldiers entitled SOG (Studies and Observation Group) that assembled in groups of 6-9 men and were inserted in the jungles of cambodia to fullfill some objectives, such as recon, rescues, and destruction or guns, ammo and vehicles. During the war SOG obtained the best kill ratio ever in american military history. 100:1 reaching a high of 150:1 in 1968, this means that 100 NVA or Vietcong soldiers were killed per 1 SOG dead. Hope this enlightens some minds that criticize american army. Oh almost forgot !!! Some former members of SOG formed a group today known as Delta Force. |
