Delta Force: Black Hawk Down is tactical first-person shooter based upon and around the Operation Restore Hope and Task Force Ranger campaigns and follows members of the elite Delta Force, the US 75th Ranger Regiment, the 10th Mountain Division, and the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment as they participate in a number of daring raids against the oppressive Somali warlords in and around Mogadishu.

The game begins in late 1992 as the United Nations begins Operation Restore Hope, a humanitarian mission designed to feed the starving nation of Somalia. It then continues on through the missions of Task Force Ranger, which was comprised of U.S. Special Operations Forces. The game concludes with the well-documented battle of Mogadishu. There are 15 missions in the single player campaign, each with a variety of objectives that often change as events unfold around you. Missions include tracking down and destroying enemy weapons shipments, safeguarding delivery of food and UN relief supplies to various camps, destroying enemy communication elements, and capturing enemy leaders.

Black Hawk Down's arsenal is similar to that of most military-themed shooters. Weapons range from pistols (Colt M1911A1 .45) to assault rifles (CAR-15 + M203 grenade launcher) to sniper rifles (M-24) to machine guns (M-60). There are several weapons for each of these categories, in addition to grenades and other explosives. Most of the weapons have some sort of a zoom scope, and your accuracy varies depending on what you're doing at a given moment (running, crouching, etc). You will also have access to vehicle mounted and fixed weapon emplacements. These include the .50 cal machine guns on the humvees, as well as the mini-guns on the Blackhawks.

Although the game offers a plethora of team commands to choose from, Black Hawk Down is mostly a straightforward, simplistic action game with some real-world trappings. You run and shoot. You have objectives and a HUD radar showing you where to go next. You can man machine gun posts or jump in a chopper and man the mini gun. The multiplayer portion of the game won't disappoint you. Black Hawk Down contains huge multiplayer maps, 7 different multiplayer modes (Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Attack and Defend, Search and Destroy, King of the Hill and Team King of the Hill) and up to 50 players on a server at a time (LAN) or up to 32 simultaneous players via NovaWorld servers.

Overall, Black Hawk Down is a great FPS that finally revives the Delta Force franchise after the rather disappointing Land Warrior and Task Force Dagger games. If you like the movie Black Hawk Down you are gonna love this game because it makes you feel. However, if you are looking for a serious military simulation, you should try Raven Shield.
