SimCity 4
(hx) 03:06 AM CET - Jan,25 2003

SimCity 4 is already the fourth installment of one of the most addictive games and challenging games in history. Yeah, It's really hard to believe that many years have passed since the original SimCity (1989?) was first released. I also remember Simcity 2000 (1993), Simcity 3000 (1999), Simcity 3000 Unlimited (2000) and various revisions in between. I've been updating this website since 1st Feb 2000, that's why there's no one review for these older Simcity games, but I've played them all. Now I am going to take a look at is the most recent version of Simcity - Simcity 4. SimCity 4 has many new improvements and a brand new graphical look, it's more intuitive, deeper, and the scale of your cities will be different to those you're used to. In terms of gameplay, SimCity 4 doesn't break much new ground - it's just like a prettier version of SimCity 3000. In the role of the god, you sculpt mountains and seed forests as well as drop disasters such as meteors, twisters and volcanoes on your City inhabitants. As the mayor of your city, you zone areas, install utilities, build roads, and construct building to protect your citizens (or at least bring in profit). There is a shift in gameplay from SimCity 3000 with you are controlling the regional cities instead of just one small plot of land. The addition of adding sims (you can create up to five characters or import them from the Sims) to your city is nice too. If you have the game the sims you can transport your sim into the city and they will give you feed back into how you can improve your city. As I mentioned above, SimCity 4 does the same or less as other games in the series. But, than again what do you expect from a city building simulation? :) Bellow I will discuss pros and cons:

  • regional planning aspects add a whole new dimension to the game, your own region contains around 20+ slots of varying sizes for separate cities
  • you can create up to 5 characters (or import them from the Sims), and move them into any house of your choice
  • very challenging, much harder gameplay than SC 3000, you will really have to think twice about every park or bus stop that you build (I remember leaving the city overnight to itself in SC2000/3000 as well and getting huge amounts of cash - yet in SC4 you have to micromanage all the time)
  • much clearer demand indicator, good balance
  • tons of replay value
  • beautiful graphics (new pseudo-3D engine), extremely detailed, over five different zoom levels
  • many different types of parks, types of trees, and new plethora of landmarks
  • earthquakes, fires, lightning, robot attacks, volcanoes and meteors disasters
  • transport is a lot easier than before, and more logical + your sims seem to know-where they're going and take the best route
  • secondary roads are now laid automatically when you lay down your zones
  • simple tutorial + very low learning curve
  • interface far simpler than it was in any other SimCity title
  • audio that gets more and more detailed the closer you zoom
  • you can import your mp3s
  • cooperative multiplayer matches (not implemented yet)
  • no goal-based scenarios
  • there's no difficulty level (you cannot increase the challenge by starting with a lower budget or even a bank loan)
  • resource hog (uses a lot of resources), you will need a fast machine if you want the specs up high,  running the game in 16bit mode versus 32 bit mode gives a nice performance boost, game runs very slow (with recommended system specs) when your city gets over 50,000 people
  • even on highest zoom level you still won't get quite get Tropico' style graphics
  • plethora of technical problems with ATi cards (disabled scrolling with ATI cards which you have to enable manually in the options)
  • local streets are now automatically laid within each new zone that you build - but there is no feature to turn this off
  • there's no real innovation in the road system
  • all the micromanagement may annoy a few
  • poor game manual (it's a 45 page booklet)
  • you can only save the city into one file, with no backup files (So if you want to experiment, you have to save, then quit without saving, then load the city from the region map)
  • doesn't feature full 3D graphics - you won't be able to freely rotate that camera
So was it worth the wait? Yes it was. Simcity 4 is a great game! It really is well done, even though it does seem rushed out the door. The new possibilities such as region-play, which allows you to control several cities and make them work together, in combination with a very sophisticated terrain-editor makes the value of the game high enough to buy this. However, this game does have major flaws. I hope Maxis patches the crashes, performance issues, and straightens out the problems with interconnected cities. If they do this, the game will be top notch indeed. There's no playable demo out yet, for more information and goodies visit homepage and fansites.

snd: 4/5 - decent, nice array of ambient music + you can import your mp3s, disaster effects are solid, audio that gets more and more detailed the closer you zoom
gfx: 5/5 - beautiful, extremely detailed, a good balance between game speed and graphic quality, new pseudo-3D engine - you won't be able to freely rotate that camera
playability: 5/5 - tons of replay value, very challenging, simple tutorial + very low learning curve, interface is friendly and easy to figure out, requires an amount of time and patience, cooperative multiplayer matches (not implemented yet), resource hog, poor game manual, no goal-based scenarios, No "Undo" button

the minimum reqs are complete bullshit. IMO, the rig for this game hasnt even been created yet. I have a xp 2400, 1.5 gigs of ram and a gf3 ti200 and i still get massive hardware lag when a city gets big. forget even trying to play this game on anything under a 1 ghz machine.

EA is full of shit, this game needs ton of optimization for the code.

Well damn that sucks. I was hoping to check this one out, but it sounds like it'll be more trouble than its worth...

Davidposted - Jan, 25 2003 - 13:36
Fraud. Pure and simple. EA/Maxis had been promising a true 3D system for SimCity 4. While the region feature is nice, the macro-economics of the game are overly simplistic. The game is unstable, and the micromanagement is annoying. Mayor's in the real world don't spend half of their time demolishing vacant buildings.

I was so happy that I could buy this game, untill I started to play. It is sooooooooo slow, what a pity and a disappointment

i'm running the game on a P3-850 / 448ram / GF2MX, and only problem is playing on big tiles. My city has 35k pop and i play on zoom#3 and its allright, saving takes way too long.. EA better optimize the code fast

BLOODUKposted - Jan, 25 2003 - 20:16 Read the simcity thread , people are REALLY angry with this game....

Haha someone was complaining it was running to slow on their 16MB video card. *Rolls Eyes* Anyways, I think Maxis did a good job. I have not had any crashes or resets. Hopefully a patch will be released soon for some of you.

The bug where using a Geforce card and loading the game up with Anti-Aliasing on makes the computer reboot should have been xspotted by their bug testers before shipping, shows how EA like thier games out fast for the immediate cash :(

John Carmack is an asshole. If people releases games like this and it's legal, why to worry about optimizing ? EA wants money. The same lack of optimization happened to Ultima X.

its just too bad thatmost EA games suck. well, they didnt just screw up sim city 4, they srewed em all. tried playing CnC generals, live 2003 and nfshp2? I mean, they ask for high hardware requiremtns but their graphics dont justify them.I have an athlon 1000 and gf4mx440, i know ive a slow sytem but it should work fine still. take note, most non EA games work good. to add to EA's bullshit, gameplay has crash landed, noit hasnt even landed, it obliterated while crashing. EA!!! have you even tried playing your games before you release them??? c'mon!! people pay for good gameplay and graphics and you just dpnt deliver, wht the hell id maxis allow EA to screw em up? lucky me i live in the philippines where it easy to get pirated cd's. this way, i can make a hundred copies and give them to people i hate

AMD OR NO AMD OR WHATEVER MACHINE YOU GOT DOES NOT MATTER REALLY TOO MUCH AS LONG AS ITS NEW. BASICALLY THE PROBLEM IS WITH THE GAME NOT THE MACHINES. unless of course your machine is old. the programmers should know what the majority of gamers got and make sure it works on there systems if not they be making no chaaa keee na man.

For the love of all thats good, get real people! This game is extremely intensive. I have a LOT to do and render. The details are huge! It does not just stress your CPU and Video card.. it really tests your RAM and hard drive! If you have a slow hard drive, man i feel so sorry for you.. On my 2.4ghz (230FSB) athlon xp (unlocked hehehe) pc 2700 ram, geforce4 ti 4200 running faster than a 4400, i only lag a little for the first 5mins and i have 250,000 in my main "city" I LOVE THIS GAME!!!

YOU ON GLUE MAN???posted - May, 23 2003 - 03:51
you get real! THATS THE BIGGEST LOAD OF MALARKY I HAVE EVER SEEN POSTED. anyone with brains knows writing to the hard drive is slow regarless of the hard drive speed. a good designer should not be writing to the hard drive a lot. You said it lags 5 minutes for a 250,000 size town thats PATHETICALLY SLOW. how long do you think it will lag when the population is 10 million? ? possibly 40 times more slow. even if it was 3 times as slow that would be 15 minutes of waiting WHICH IS AN UNACCEPTABLE WAIT. By your own statements one would conclude that the game is slow. YOU OBVIOUSLY HAVE NO CLUE WHAT YOUR TALKING ABOUT. I DON'T WANT TO WAIT > 15 MINUTES FOR THE GAME TO LOAD. IF THE GAME TESTS USES YOUR HARD DRIVE TOO MUCH THEN THATS POOR DESIGN OF THE GAME BECAUSE WRITING TO HARD DRIVE IS SLOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWW. THERE IS NO SIGNICIANT SPEED VARIATION IN HARD DRIVES. UNLESS YOU GOT 90,000+ DOLLA TO SPEND. DO YOU HAVE 90000 DOLLA TO SPEND?

I got the SC4 for about a week. Truly, SC3000 was more exciting - it had some of that "arcade touch". SC4 is a nice piece of work, but I CAN'T STAND slow money, slow development, slow everything! What were EA thinking? Who should be the client - youth likes to play fast, grandpas haven't got enough time to play this shit(they can die), people over thirty usually don't waste their time playing videogames. SC4 - who needs it???

I have P4 2.4 overclocked to 2.8ghz on an asus p4p800 mobo, with 2 sticks of corsair 3700 256 ram in dual mode. I have ati 9800 pro 128 video card. With all setings on high, screen res of 1280x1040...this game lags...even with settings lower, a big city makes the game lag like crazy, and some buildings start to disappear.

Hey, it's not that bad. Sure, the gameplay is slow, but it doesn't lag for me on a 130k-people medium city. AthlonXP 2600+ (FSB 333), 1536 MB DDR400 (dual channel, nForce2), and a laughable Geforce2 Ti (modded to Quadro2 Pro).

what you people dont realise is that the main problem your having is your video cards. i have a SiS 650_740, an 8Mb piece-of-shit card, and it runs 10X better that a replica of my machine with a GeForce 4 in it. Can anybody say Nvidia?

Voposted - Sep, 27 2005 - 21:52
Here it don't run. Probably programming's errors, maybe even basic coding errors. Down with EA =/
