Medal of Honor Allied Assault : Spearhead
(hx) 04:20 AM CET - Dec,14 2002

Medal of Honor Allied Assault Spearhead is an expansion pack to the hit WWII first person shooter, Medal of Honor Allied Assault (review 89%). Unlike the original game, which was clearly influenced by the award-winning film Saving Private Ryan, the expansion does feel very much like the HBO TV Mini-Series, Band of Brothers. You will take on the identity of Sergeant Jack Barnes, an American soldier, as he endures the final months of World War II, from Operation Overlord to the Battle of the Bulge and culminating with the fall of Berlin.

So what can you expect? If you've played Medal of Honor Allied Assault you know what they game is about and how it's played. Spearhead begins with a scene that could have been taken straight out of Band of Brothers: It's D-Day, and you're on a transport plane that will soon drop you into Normandy As you float down to the ground, you'll immediately take note of hundreds of other parachutes, dozens of other C-47 planes, and streaks of triple-A fire lighting up the night sky....After parachuting in about five miles inland from Omaha Beach with the British 6th Airborne division, you set out on a top-secret mission to destroy German fortified artillery positions. In a matter of hours, Allied forces will begin the D-Day invasion. Your success or failure in knocking out these installations will have a huge impact on what happens when the troops land on the beach...That's how the first mission begins.

Medal of Honor: Spearhead contains 9 new single-player levels ranging from behind enemy lines in Normandy to the Battle of the Bulge and the fall of Berlin, some new soldier models, skins, voices. The expansion also adds a list of new weapons (F1 Fragment Grenade, M36 Mills Bomb, "Cooking" Fragmentation Grenades, Smoke Grenades, Webley Revolver Mark IV, 7.62mm Model 1895 Nagant Revolver, Lee Enfield, Gewehr 43, Sten Mark 2, PPSh41 SMG, Soviet 7.62mm DTM, Portable Maschinengewehr 42, Thompson submachine, AA Guns, Flak Cannon, Mortars, Neblewerfers, T34 Tanks, PZB41 Tank Busters) to your theater of operation. These weapons span across multiple countries, and have significant characteristics to them all. Sounds like many new weapons, however the weapons suffer from being too similar to one another. Fortunately the developers added a secondary fire option to the weapons. It's pretty useful especially when you're low on ammo. Also controlling T34 Tanks is pretty enjoyable! You can control the gun turret on the tanks as well as the machine gun by switching between them with the right mouse button.

Multiplayer features 12 multiplayer maps including the Arnhem Bridge and the streets of Berlin, and five gameplay modes, including the new Tug-of-War (TOW) mode. TOW is an objective-based style of multiplayer gameplay that is completely new to Medal of Honor game types. One of the primary objectives is to defend (or attack) team spawn locations. If one side is able to destroy their enemy's spawn area, that team quickly gains an advantage. Their teammates continue to spawn into battle if they are killed, whereas enemies do not. Other objectives include taking top-secret aircraft, stealing a submarine, or fighting to control Berlin.

Actually, the feel of the game seems a little better than the first game, though it plays pretty much the same. Definitely don't buy this expansion only for single player! The single player portion of the game takes only about 3-4 hours of game time to play start to finish. Needless to say it's too short for a $30 dollar expansion pack There's no doubt that this pack seems to be much more focused on the multiplayer, but anyway there's little arguing that Medal of Honor: Spearhead is simply too expensive for what it contains. Only if you are hard-core fan of the original Medal of Honor: Allied Assault's multiplayer, then this Spearhead Expansion Pack is a must have. Download playable demo (142MB).

Minimum system requirements: (Previous installation of Medal of Honor Allied Assault required) 450 MHz Intel Pentium II or 500 MHz AMD Athlon (+700MHz CPU recommended), 128 MB RAM, 8x CD-ROM, 800 MB free HDD space, 16 MB OpenGL capable video card (32MB recommended), DirectX 8.0 compatible sound card.

snd: 5/5 - pretty much the same as MoH, new voices, new ambient sounds are amazing
gfx: 4/5 - pretty much the same as MoH, some new soldier models, skins, a lot of minor aesthetic details have been upgraded, some new lighting/particle effects, trees can be moved down with the right amount of gunfire, some major clipping and collision detection issues
playability: 4/5 - pretty much the same as MoH, excels in immersing you into feeling like you are in WWII, new things like anti-aircraft guns, Russian tanks, German anti-tank weapons, heavy artillery..., more focused on the multiplayer - new TOW mode, it's pretty annoying to keep your AI team alive, too many scripted sequences, some of the animation and sound syncs are buggy, again unsatisfying end of the game
genre: WWII-themed FPS
release: November 2002
developer: EA Los Angeles
publisher: Electronic Arts
Overall: 75%

I played about 10 seconds of the MOHAA single player and decided i would never play it again. Albeit, it was an illegal version so i never tried the multiplayer, but i'm not going to buy a game with such bad single player!

I have been gaming for a long time! And when I played SpearHead, I knew right off the bat that this game SUCKS! I took my copy back to the store and got my $ back. I would not suggest this game to my worst enemy. And for those of you who think it is great, I ask you to be honest with just plain sucks...

MassFlamerposted - Dec, 15 2002 - 04:31
well this game is very good, as was MOH:AA. Those who say the game sucked after playing for just a few minutes are completely ignorant. These games are so deep, that those who throw out games after a few minutes don't even deserve the enjoyment, let alone respect such a work of gaming goodness.

Damm too bloody short....why do they keep doing it? i was hoping for 15 or so new levels, but those 9 are even smaller than the expected.. i would give it 50%

Hummmm, Buy or Not to buy ??? Sounds good looks good maybe I'll try the demo... I don't know man is this game good or not, Is it short like Max Payne??? If so the hell with it that pissed me off I hate short games, finished in a day and never play it again ....

Zakk Wildeposted - Dec, 16 2002 - 04:12
That's why they call it an expansion pack dumbass

Pas D\'Argentposted - Dec, 16 2002 - 08:03
If all you play is single player, this game is maybe worth $20; the SP is quite short and the (few) missions IMO aren't as much fun as the original. In MOHAA you were more a commando in this expansion you are more of a grunt shoveling an avalance of sh*t with a pitchfork. I wish I'd waited to pick this one out of the bargain bin.

Most shoot em ups have nothing new than graphics and different weapons now. What the differents is the multiplayer part which is the differece between each soot em up , hardly play the single player part the MP is more important as its never ending play. The new expansion Spearhead is even better in the MP maps and objectives than before top notch MP play get it. Does seem a lack of UK servers at the moment though give it 5/5 MP 3/5 SP

Good variety of new weapons. Plays much the same as the first. Very short game because it's an add-on. Should not be priced priced around £20. Buy it if you liked the first one, or even better, borrow it off your mates.

The multiplayer suffers some serious clipping where the models disappear in the ground or in the stairs, in heavy fire the game lags even with a 4600 card @ 1024x768 on a 1.53GHz box. But it is a great game that when you aim you actually hit people unlike that piece of shit they call SOF2. And in MOH they didn't go CS style adding gay guns and changing guns as they did to the base game of SOF2. So if we are to compare this game against others of near gendre, I'd have to say MOH rocks. Spearhead introduces new gameplay, new weapons and new maps making it a pretty fun and replayable game. Oh and one thing it still doesnt do is list the active mods on a server. There are so many n00b realism mods, that can take a lot of fun and skill out of the game. 1 shot and 1 kill = n00b mode to me and requires no skill as compared to regular game play where you have to shoot your target more than once. If they could list the 'unpurities' of a server it would really make this game rock.

teh single player is great, those who say it sucks, didnt play it, they just lie. if you liked mohaa you are gonna love this too, especially when you seen "band of brothers". i didnt test the multiplayer part, cause the first multiplayer demo sucked so hard in technical aspects (pings, clipping etc.), i wasnt interested anymore and i prefer to play BF1942 for that. BUT THE MAIN PROBLEM OF THE SINGLE PLAYER GAME IS, THAT IT IS TOO SHORT. I was finished with teh game in 3 hours! adn worse of all, it made you addictive and you cant understand why there isnt more. So worth buying for the single player mode? I would rather recommend getting it from your local videostore for one day, cheaper and you wont be that angry about the shortage of the game. about the multiplayer part i cant comment. and i repeat, those who say "already after 10 seconds it sucked" are just trying to get on our nerves, they probably have a computer where the game doesnt even run...

Bartmanposted - Dec, 17 2002 - 18:11
well I think any review that gave it more than 75% or 7/10 is biased. The game has problems, has had problems even with 1.1 and the lack of informative messages about mods running on a server is just complete useless. I'm sorry but we aren't all 16 with massive hours to waste. Some of us are over 30 with families and we don't have time to find the 'right' server. This is just a example of the incompetance of the MOH development team. There are also issues of clipping even after patch and guns that have unrealistic distances.

lets say they have no honor to the survivors of WW's.. this gives you the feel of how being in their situation.. the MP is not bad either.. and the movement are quite realistic rather than few FPS games i saw (bunnyhopping, carrying weapon like you're carrying handgun, 360 hip turn, jump 5 feet in the air).. think about it.

man this game is such crap, single player heh it was f*in awesome, but Mplayer was a waste of time, they released an unfinished game in the multiplayer department... if u think of allll the glitches in SH after 2 patches and compare them to AA after 1 patch... then SH sux.. i mean ppl morph in the ground... movement unrealistic... guns r beyond accurate, u can out aim a sniper with an SMG, i mean WTF? POS game and bad developer team... even the maps suck shit for Mplayer they r bigged dwon Custom maps for MOHAA.. POS

wilcoxposted - Feb, 18 2003 - 02:46
It's worth it for the Multiplayer. Fuck the single player

i nead the MP walktrough ( the bridge ) for our clan....

Joe Shmoeposted - Jun, 07 2003 - 17:18
the game wasnt aimed at realism so of course the guns are more accurate than they should be.

melonyposted - Jun, 21 2003 - 20:20
not aimed for realism? are you stupid? answer: yes.

monkey manposted - Jun, 30 2003 - 15:46
