Big Scale Racing|
(hx) 02:47 AM CEST - Sep,02 2002
Big Scale Racing is racing simulator based on the highly popular 1/5 scale Radio Control (RC) racing hobby. If you ever had an opportunity to drive these 1/5 scale RC petrol driven racing cars (length approximately 90 cm) in real life, you must agree it's definitely exciting and lots of fun. Now this game brings you almost the same excitement through your computer keyboard and screen. I must say that BumbleBeast did a very good job, the cars are pretty accurate to their real-world RC racer counterparts and the tracks look pretty much like the sorts of courses you'd see in real (all tracks but one exist in real life and are located in the Netherlands).
Big Scale Racing features 10 unique highly detailed cars (both in terms of body and dynamics) with very realistic handling of all the cars, from stable and slow beginner cars to fast and twitchy "pro" cars, 240 AI opponents (each with unique behavior and skill), 6 highly detailed real-life race tracks, two different race types: cup race (all cars are of a single specific type) and open race (car types are mixed) and multiplayer up to eight players via LAN (TCP/IP) or split screen (2 players).
You can choose from three different game modes - Training (with ghost car option showing best lap or last lap), Quick Race (any track, any car, both single and multiplayer), Championship Phase 1 (10 Cup championships to win) and Championship Phase 2 (Big Scale Racing championship, ongoing, here you must beat 240 opponents to get to the top). In Championship, first you have to win or get on the podium at the end of the season to win a new car class in each of the cup championships. A new class will then be unlocked. When you unlock all cars, phase one is complete and you are invited to enter the final open championship. Here you race with a car of you choice during a season. On each track, first you participate in a cup race, where all opponents have the same car class. Next a new starting grid is assembled where opponents of different classes are allowed. This is an open race. The actual drivers are chosen based on the championship ranking. You compete with 239 other drivers and you need to beat them all. From features I mentioned above you have probably already noticed that Big Scale Racing can be played on a single computer by two players using Split Screen or in LAN mode (via TCP/IP). Both is definitely fun, the game is fine-tuned for use with the keyboard, but it also works very nicely with a joystick, wheel or pad. I think Big Scale Racing is pretty cool game, be sure to check it out! Download playable demo
snd: 3/5 - quite good, a few minor bugs
gfx: 4/5 -
pretty good, weather effects, including rain, fog, and time of day, excellent cars' physics though no damage model is implemented
playability: 4/5 -
high playability&fun, great AI, pretty easy controls, multiplayer up to eight players via LAN (TCP/IP) or split screen (2 players), real-life tracks

|You feel that this is a Value title, but it has been very nicely finished, and the feel is excellent. Good game.|

|Actually Erboz how can u feel anything without playing the game ? Usually once you've played a demo you know how the game feels. There are many games with excellent GFX but when it comes to playability its a thumbs down.
Although i agree it does look polished !|

|Yeah, that's correct, in todays game-"industry" you have to wait a very long time to find one game that feels right, between all the junk released lately, well, to me BSR feels exactly right. Sure I've played it ;)
Anno 2002, we can conclude that 99% of game that get released are "Screenshot-releases". You understand ? Nice screenshots and a lot of fuzz and commercial sh*t, but BSR feels great.

|Ahh People! One word: REVOLT! Best damn remote-controlled car racing game for the PC EVER! This one is beyond a purile joke! Gawd is it dullsville! Just a cheap imitation and if they had any shiet for brains they'd go the REVOLT route and enlarge the genre beyond just sterile round-about track racing. |
|Erboz||posted - Sep, 03 2002 - 05:11|
|Yeah, REVOLT was just brilliant, but then again, BSR is *pure* BSR, no shooting darts or waterpearls or stuff, just plain racing. REVOLT allready got a 94% for me, BSR scores a fair 85%|

|just wanted to add to my review now that i've finished the game in about 2 weeks. they should've added a replay, should have more tracks (gets old pretty quick playing only 6 tracks) and AI is too easy.|

|I like this game. I am looking for good playabilty race (aren't we all?), especally wiht LAN support. I tried M. Schumacher's Kart, but couldn't belive that it has NO MULTIPLAYER ?!?! please send me suggestions what games should i try. (did Revolt)
p.s. does anybody remember Death Rally ? Is tere a game like it now days?
p.p.s. Super Cars II (Amiga.. those were the days)|
