Grand Prix 4
(hx) 04:16 PM CEST - Jul,04 2002

Grand Prix 4 (GP4), a sequel of sorts to F1 Grand Prix, Grand Prix 2, and Grand Prix 3, features all the teams, all the drivers, all the tracks and all the races of the 2001 Championship Season Official FI Licensed product endorsed by the FOA.Yeah it's already a year out of date compared to EA' F1 2002 (I suppose to review this game soon too), but there are already available year 2002 carsets, and tons of add-ons for this game available for download from AlphaF1, so it's really a small problem. First off, I don't want to compare this game with EA's F1 2002. I have respect for both the games, but I think that GP4 and F12002 are now just too different to compare. It's always hard to review F1 sim games, that's why I focused more on playability with keyboard instead on real physics (I never drove a formula 1 car ) and besides the GP series has always been very good for keyboard players. Basically if you didn't like GP2 or GP3 you won't like GP4.

What is excellent?
  • an atmospheric racing experience
  • racing with the AI cars is pretty cool
  • all new graphics engine, motion-captured pit crew, two completely new camera angles (T-Cam view with onboard camera)
  • raindrops-on-the-camera-lens effect (see screenshots 43 and 44)
  • very precise track layouts - 17 tracks from last years season (especially Monaco is superbly represented and remarkably detailed)
  • well done replay function
  • highly realistic sound of your engine, great in-car sound
  • excellent playability with keyboard.
  • excellent multiplayer support up to 4 players (though no Internet mode due to FIA constraints)
  • menus are pretty simple to use
  • community - tons of add-ons already available

What's a bit disappointing?
  • old good GP3 physics is now a bit dated - no tyre model is implemented, no suspension geometry settings or tyre pressure settings to adjust, tyres are not sensitive to temperature changes, no track temperatures
  • unrealistic strategy - you're fastest fully fuel-loaded, but with new tyres, instead to be fastest before the pit stop (since the weight is more important than used tyres)
  • no stop/go penalties (there is only annoying black flag to slow you down for ~10 secs)
  • poor force feedback - no kerbs, no braking forces, no compression and expansion of the suspension (though I heard that Logitech wheel gave better and more feedback than the MS, let me know in comments...)
  • quite high hardware requirements, seems 1GHz CPU/256MB RAM + GeForce2 MX is minimum.

After playing GP4 more (about two weeks now), I have to say I'm much more impressed than I was at the beginning, the AI is incredible and feels life-like and   cars are stable and predictable, even with the driver aids switched off.  I just wish I had more time to play ...  :) There is no doubt that if you`re a fan of the series then you will probably buy this game.

snd: 5/5 - highly realistic sound of your engine, well developed 3D sound positioning system
gfx: 4/5 - all new graphics engine, ultra-realistic track layouts, sharply defined objects, smooth textures and panoramic backdrops, motion-captured pit crew, two completely new camera angles, changing weather conditions, well done replay function, damage effects could be better (you can’t loosen the front wing)
playability: 3/5 - good enjoyable, excellent playability with keyboard, great AI, multi-player only via TCP/IP&HotSeat (due to FIA constraints no Internet), lack of speed sensation, previous GP games have had better manuals, with detailed set-up advices and track information
genre: F1 racing
release: June 2002
developer: Microprose&Simergy
the game is similar to: GP3
publisher: Infogrames
Very_good
Overall: 80%

Despite the lame menus, this is a great game !

F1 2002 from EA Sports is way better

It would be the best if...! Big hardware req. (slow on Ath.XP 1700+ with GeForce3) Otherwise good foes in ace difficulty and very good driving feeling. Superb graphics (but my machine is too slow for full detail) Gives good force-feedback on my momo (logitech) wheel.

Get GP3-2000, install one of the EMac's carsets (http://www.sportplanet.com/emac/gp3/index.html), get GP3 Lampert tracks (http://www.drivingitalia.com/gp3lampert/) and install GPxPatch (http://www.xs4all.nl/~rsdi/gpxpatch.html) and you have a better game running on a resonable PC. For a modern F1 game, get F1-2002.

What kind of graphics engine have they put into this game? Even with a P4 1.6GHz and GeForce 2 Mx the game will slow down way too much on the first laps when there are too many cars around. and my system is way beyond minimum. When there's this slight change in weather and rain starts, fps drops way too much too. In my system F1 2002 runs much better. And the graphics are prettier too. Didn't like the game. Still playing GP3 which I think is better. Be careful.

firstly, those who are curious if grand prix 4 is worth buying check out the official forum for the latest information, appparently the game has some bugs and lots of discussions on how grand prix 4 would perform on various hardware pc's. my pc is a pentium 3-500mhz, 256meg ram, geforce 2 32 meg (medium spec pc) and the game runs at 15 frames with reasonable detail, my opinion is that your attention is more on the gameplay rather than the emphasis, though other people may disagree with this. Before posting this i played 72 laps of grand prix (lasted about 3 hours or so). The AI is awesome, which i noticed in the last ten laps of the race. Michael Schumacher, who was behind me (i was playing as ralph schumacher) had overtaken other drivers on straight roads and on corners and was tailing behind me in the final laps of the race. For the remaining laps i had been watching the mirros to see how far and close michael schumacher was on various parts of the track. No matter where you are if you make a mistake whether it be over or understeering, michael schumacher will make you regret making that mistake as he gets in front of you. i did make a few mistakes as i kept on looking in the mirrors, though i blocked him off as he tried to overtake. For gamers who like realism in games, grand prix 4 doesnt offer much, for example, in real life the more fuel you have in your car the more heavier and slower you go, tyres dont seem to have much of a factor, bridgestone or mitchellen tyres is not a choice, tyre wear doesnt have a impact on the race. Some things do have a significance like losing your front wing of the car causes an unbalance and speed, slipstreaming (term meaning following behind another car (particular on a straight road) thus reducing the amount of air resistance) and if you try slipstreaming in the game your speed should increase a little bit, which comes a bit closer to realism, also broken car parts on the road will fly off the road when you drive over them. There is quite a bit i could go on about though i wont bore you, the game is a bit more arcade type racing game though if you are a fan of the geoff crammond grand prix game series then this will please you, for people who are new to this, this may appeal to you, though people have their own tastes and preferences. i had to say this, so that people who want to buy this or are curious. the game has bugs as well, check out the forum at www.grandprix3.com/forum.

U know what ? ...I was really excited about that release, just becouse those Geoff guy started to say something about the need of the new GP (4) to be "lighter" then those previous versions ... He spoke a lot about the new graphical building and in-motion beneficts of their new methods and bla bla bla ... ...I never saw such FIASCO like that on game comunity !!!! The game is amazing , but only after you have your new Silicon Graphics machine over your table-set !This must be a Intel push-over to make us get better processors ... ;-) I like race games, not only F1 ones, so I keep saying that Rally Trophy, Colin McRae 2 and some a few are waaaaaay better and easier to deal with ! Don't you agree ??? I mean, they (GP 4 crew) are NOT doing what hey preach !!! Shame on you guys !If you have GP 3, don't waste your time on this ! Unless you really need to have Barrichello driving a Ferrari, uou don't have to much to get ! Shame, shame and shame ! GruvWiz

Don't know about bad FPS. I got a AMD XP 1700 with 768 MB RAM and Radeon 8500LE under W2k and I can play at 1280*1024 all details to max very smoothly without problems. Maybe this is (at least once!) a GeForce issue?!

[email protected]posted - Jul, 06 2002 - 00:23
Only idiots use the Radeon 8500LE boards.

Erbozposted - Jul, 06 2002 - 02:45
Those saying that F1 2002 is better than GP4, have *NEVER* spend more than 5 mins to GP4. They don't know sh*t what they're talking about. GP4 is a game that will make you happier with every hour you take for it. After some hours of playing you'll agree that GP4 beats the "We-Do-All" crap by EA in all aspects. And YES, it runs and looks Perfect on a Radeon 8500 !

Erbozposted - Jul, 06 2002 - 02:49
Another thing.... I won't be surprised if F1-2002 will get a better "Review"-score than GP4. For giving some serious points, you have to play a game for hours. EA's games are all created with the reviewers in mind, they all base their final conclusions on "First Impression", and that's exactly what the EA-bullies have in mind when creating their crap.

Erbozposted - Jul, 06 2002 - 09:36
As I've said...... Looking at the screenshots in the review, I can only conclude that the reviewer didn't spend too much time reviewing this one, cause there not even shots from a rainy race. He just did 1 (ONE) race, and based his whole theory on it. You want some *REAL* GP4 screenshots ? Go to http://www.drivingitalia.com/f1racer/gp4.htm

hxposted - Jul, 06 2002 - 11:56
Erboz, you are wrong :) I spent two weeks with this game. You ever heard it's difficult to drive F1 car and make screenshots at the same time? Of course, I suppose that F1's fan-sites will offer much better screenshots than my website. If you don't like my review, write some arguments against. Thanks.

Erbozposted - Jul, 06 2002 - 16:13
Sorry hx, I certainly LIKE your review, it's a good review. BUT I do not like the idea of people basing their conclusion on screenshots instead of gameplay. Just once again, GP is good at start, and the satisfaction will grow the more you play it, with F1 2002, it's just the opposite. Some games are created with the player in mind, others with the reviews&commercialization in mind ;)

hxposted - Jul, 06 2002 - 20:33
To Erboz: yeah it's true, i will grab better screenshots next time :) Now playing EA's F1 2002, hard to say which game is better... i think they are comparable.

Mr. Beanposted - Jul, 07 2002 - 18:24
I always played GP1, 2, 3 and lately GP4. I tried some of EA's and threw them away within a few hours. I am reluctant to admit but since F1 2002 the tide has changed. The experience with EA's latest is awesome in every aspect. Maybe the rain-graphics are not as nice as those in EA F1 2002 but drive-ability, especially force feedback effects and the grahpics engine are very very convincing. I haven't played enough yet to conclude about the AI but this also has much improved in F1 2002. GP4 is almost unplayable on my system (PIII 500Mhz, 128 Mb and a 64Mb. Abit Siluro 400MX). Just my opinion but playing EA instead of GPx says a lot.

tarmoposted - Jul, 09 2002 - 00:52
i have been played gp(f1gp,gp2,gp3) series for ages. 1 reason, because it there were any other good f1 games. now when ea came, i don't play them anymore. sometimes i modify them into CART game, but thats all. Main reason is that ea f1 series gives better feeling. geoff is not a master anymore. one of the bestest geoff's games will be forever 'stunt car racer'.

Willposted - Jul, 15 2002 - 07:07
i had a go at gp3 and had very bad experience with it. people who like the game, that's fine but for me, compared with ea f1 2002 and 2001, it stinks. i haven't had a go at gp4 but if you're gonna release a game that bad, i'm not very convinced that you will get ahead of ea sports that quickly

Me I like this play for unr only thing: it is that one can play several with the same PC and to have fun during hours. For the remainder I cannot compare yet because I do not have to play with F1 2002 EA yet but your comments put to me in appéti Phil

Hansposted - Aug, 06 2002 - 01:38
Sorry but on my computer the game doesn't run very smoothly, 800Mhz, 384Mb, Hercules 8500Le 128Mb. I think it is a bit arrogant to make a game and force people to buy a new computer. I hope GP5 will become more user-friendly. Another thing is I spend 1/2 hour to configer my MS-racingwheel, the same bug that was in GP2. I used to play GP2, a few years ago, good game, for normal computer, with very good sound. Now I am going to play F1 2002.

Da Fonzposted - Aug, 11 2002 - 07:00
Don't get this game when there is another F1 game ten times better than this one. Get EA sports. Trust me, i'm Da Fonz. Heyyy

AtariManposted - Sep, 30 2002 - 16:22
Graphics is awesome! Sound is cool. Driving model is far-away from driving a car! Regarding to force feedback, there is not enough effects even on Logitec racing wheel!!!!

I have a PIII 800Mhz, 128Mb Geforce 2 MX 32Mb, and the game run well, I have tested F1 2001 from EA, GP4 is better.

SBposted - Apr, 17 2004 - 00:35
An honest review: The game has excellent graphics and pretty good sound. Unfortunatly you need a very good graphics card to benefit from them. The tracks look great, the cars look great, but effects such as oil are missing. As far as F1 games go, this is excellent, F12002 etc are fun for arcade, but for more serious games this is the way to go. What is annoying is that in some ways, GP2 was better, for example, GP2 had a much better crash or spin realism, on GP4 spins are annoying but unless you hit a wall, they do you no harm, on GP2 just going through a gravel trap could make you loose a nose cone. Updates are easily available, and many change the gameplay, i.e. you can get a patch to have all new cars, all new performance characteristics, the new one lap qualifying etc. What should have been included but isn't are safty cars (such as those in Indycar), better AI (cars weave), Penalty systems (not 10 sec slow performance) and way of adjusting car setup in pits (i.e. wing adjustments). Even in 2004, this game is worth having, buy it, update it, play it.

mfw_96posted - Mar, 01 2005 - 18:47
I had just recently received a copy of GP4 and the game is very good, indeed. But there are couple of points worth noting. First, as mentioned beforehand, you'll definitely need a powerful machine to be able to get everything out of the game. Second, the menus are a bit confusing but it won't take long before you catch on and lastly, the retail version of the game is unstable so you'll have to download the official GP4 patch v9.6 to fix the stability issues. Other than that, the game is really, really good and i recommend it to any F1 fan out there.
