ESPN NFL Primetime 2002
(hx) 10:14 AM EDT - Jun,15 2002

If I'm talking about American football on PC platform, last two years we had chance to play only EA's Madden series. This year Konami finally decided to bring their football game, NFL Primetime to the PC. It may sound promising because ESPN is one of the biggest name in sports, and Konami uses the license to its fullest. ESPN NFL Primetime 2002 features four modes: Exhibition, Practice, Franchise (from the pre-season to the Super Bowl), and Tournament (several teams that play in), complete statistical tracking for every team and player, ESPN graphic overlays and familiar camera angles, actual faces for 120 top NFL stars, true-to-life height and weight representation for every player and updated 2001 season rosters for all 31 NFL teams. I played this game for a couple of hours, it's not as deep as Madden, but it's so so playable if I don't count bugs (frequent crashes under Windows XP) and dumb AI of computer opponents. You have control on everything that is going on, the next play being called, how much to blitz, and when on defense having the option to spy on the quarterback, but also trading and drafting just like in real football. Despite the ESPN style of presentation is used in everything from camera angles, zooms, close-ups, and pans, to the commentary from Chris "Boomer" Berman and Tom "TJ" Jackson, the game is only mediocre console football game with frequent crashes on most computers. It could be rival for Madden series, but it really isn't.

snd: 3/5 - quite ok, Chris Berman and Tom Jackson commentary, but very repetitive
gfx: 3/5 - mediocre, well done character models and stadium, ESPN graphic overlays and familiar camera angles, motion-captured animations of NFL Pro Bowlers Antonio Freeman and Carnell Lake, repetitive
playability: 2/5 - too many bugs, NO MULTIPLAYER, lame computer coaching and AI, 2001 season rosters for all 31 NFL teams
genre: American football sim
platform: PC, PS2, Xbox
release: March 2002
developer: Konami
publisher: Konami
Overall: 49%

Aaah :) Finally a DESCENT rating, or perhaps the reviewers "knows" some EA buddies ? ;-)

I don't know anyone from EA, we have no contacts :)
