Dark Planet: Battle For Natrolis|
(hx) 05:13 PM CET - Mar,24 2002
While StarCraft remains a genre-defining title, I had to play another mediocre RTS which trying to improve this apparently immortal StarCraft theme. Dark Planet: Battle for Natrolis is a futuristic 3D real-time strategy game featuring three unique races - human colonists, the Dreils and the Sorins, each engaged in bloody and brutal conflict. For eons, the planet Natrolis was controlled by the magic of the reptilian Sorin race. But when a fleet of tech-powered humans arrives to colonize the surface, they awaken the unimaginable - the Dreil, a hyper-evolved insectoid warrior race hibernating deep within the planet's core. Now, all three forces collide in a mortal struggle for domination. I could say that story sounds almost promising, but it isn't. There are no specific characters to care about and a pre-rendered short cinematic shows almost nothing purposedly. Also the tech trees and unit types available to each race are nearly identical. Dark Planet: Battle for Natrolis features a single-player mode including 3 separate campaigns with additional tutorials, and 4 multiplayer modes (including Domination mode, where players vie for control of key points on a map) that include up to 15 different types of games. This game rather disappointed me, especially very lame AI making this game very boring. Dark Planet: Battle For Natrolis proves that good graphics can't make up for very mediocre gameplay. Especially when zillions of RTS are released each year. Try this playable demo
(51MB) and visit Dark Planet: Battle For Natrolis homepage
for more details.
snd: 3/5 - cheap sounds effects - even no acknowledgements when you click on a unit, no in-game music
gfx: 4/5 -
ambient, detailed 3D world, great lighting and particle effects, deformable terrain, zoom in and out/change angles.
playability: 3/5 -
mediocre, another StarCraft clone, 3 separate campaigns, 4 multiplayer modes with 15 different games, poor interface, very poor AI, units and tech trees for each race are almost identical, path-finding problems
|genre: 3D RTS|
release: March 2002
the game is similar to: StarCraft
