Disciples II: Dark Prophecy|
(hx) 08:40 PM CET - Feb,18 2002
Disciples II: Dark Prophecy is a fantasy turn-based strategy game, sequel to Strategy First's turn-based strategy title with RPG elements, Disciples: Sacred Lands (1999). Although they say that the turn-based games are dead. I don't think so :) I like fantasy games and after week of playing Disciples II I've decided to write short review of this game, which takes place ten years after the Great Wars fought in the first Disciples. You begin the game by selecting one of four races (the Empire, the Mountain Clans, the Legions of the Damned and the Undead Hordes), once chosen, you will need to select a lord who will lead your party in battle and who will grant your party certain abilities. When a lord has been chosen, you are required to build your party and start your quest...sound familiar isn't it? Yes it is, in terms of actual gameplay, Disciples II is almost identical to its predecessor. Basically Disciples 2 is a rehash of Disciples with better graphics and some other improvements such as event system that will affect your party depending on location or actions. To be more exact, Disciples II: Dark Prophecy features 28 quests (over 20 standalone Quests), 50 new units. (for a total of 200 units), new unit and leader abilities (including combat abilities like Summon and Transform), new in game spells. (over 100 spells - updated the animation of all the existing spells), different objectives for each race, events and triggers for more dynamic gameplay, unlimited upgrade for Leaders and Units, the Leaders can be equipped with more items (up to 7 items at a time), Leader is able to use items in battle in addition to their regular attacks, new battle attacks, updated combat controls (during combat you'll be able to click on the individual units as well as their portraits on the interface, allowing you more control within the battle screen). In addition the game includes completely reworked artwork, higher resolution. (800x600/16bit), full screen combat and hot-seat in multiplayer - several individuals can play Disciples II on the same computer! If you've played Disciples, don't expect different game, this game is pretty much the same as its predecessor and doesn’t move the series forward. But for those who badly looking for a new turn-based strategy game to play, then this is definitely worth your time! Download playable demo

snd: 4/5 - great background music, good sound effects
gfx: 4/5 -
stunning combat graphics&artwork (though Etherlords looks better) , 800x600 16-bit, full screen combat
playability: 5/5 -
better looking Disciples 1, still addictive, fun and challenging, new spells, units, better combat options, hot-seat in multiplayer, too small manual in comparison with Disciples I manual, no random maps, multiplayer has some bugs
