Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood Of Steel|
(hx) 01:40 AM CEST - Apr,09 2001
Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel (FT:BoS) is an post-apocalyptic tactical strategy game that can be played either in real time (Continuous Turn Based mode of play if you will) or in a turn based format. FT:BoS takes place in the same universe as the Fallout RPG games, but the gameplay focus is a bit different, it manages to create a whole new layer of fun in the Fallout universe. But don't worry, just as before, you start the game off by either choosing from one of several pre-made characters or creating your own. FT:BoS uses the same RPG system used by the previous game. Strictly speaking, the role-playing elements have been stripped away, but the role-playing rules still apply. That means characters still have statistics like perception, agility, luck, strength, charisma, and endurance. Characters have statistics like perception, agility, luck, strength, charisma, and endurance. The game features control a squad of up to 6 characters in any mission, assemble your squad from a pool of around 30 recruits, control vehicles in combat Statistic and skill-based character development system, multiplayer: TCP/IP, Mplayer, LAN with 8 multiplayer specific maps, plus the possibility of access to the single player missions with multiplayer characters, up to 5 different play modes, and one specific map for each mode of play, have a maximum of 18 players, controlling 36 squad members. Sounds pretty cool isn't it? In addition there is Quick game option: Press a button, fill in the minimum of details, press a button and the game starts, allocates points to characters, balances the game, etc. To make starting a game really quick. Also player death: A new "dying" stage gives the other members of the squad a chance to revive their fallen comrade and Interwoven consequences: completing one mission will affect other missions in that stage. Another novelty is the option to command your soldiers in real-time even in combat situations. It makes game more dynamic, but sometime is pretty hard to play with so many soldiers all the time. However you can switch between modes frequently, using the real-time mode to wander around the map, and the turn-based mode to fight. I can say the gameplay is very pleasurable, but requires a lot of your time - believe me, the missions themselves are huge and will take hours of your time. Fortunately you can save your position at any time. The length of the missions can be problematic at times because you're occasionally given new objectives during a mission. But you may have already done something that makes completing those new objectives impossible, such as letting a seemingly expendable NPC die. It's especially frustrating when you only find out hours later that you needed to keep him or her alive. The graphics has been improved, for an example, if you're on the second floor of a building, you can shoot out the window at people on the ground - yeah it's cool to be sniper :) I am glad the engine itself is still a 2D isometric engine, similar to previous titles. I still prefer this 2D view in games like Fallout, I think it's more handy than fully 3D environment (Hehe maybe I'm still confused from playing Black & White). Well, that's all because I have to play remaining FT:BoS' missions :P However, the game is a joy to play and I only must to recommend it to any Fallout fan or fan of other games of a similar nature. Download single player demo
(115MB), but certainly multiplayer in retail version provides diametrically more fun than single player in the demo.
snd: 4/5 - Excellent voice acting, Dolby and several 3D sound-positioning techniques, repetitive music
gfx: 4/5 -
Still a 2D isometric engine (1024x768) Anti Aliased Sprites, weird intro movie /like for an Offroad game :)/
playability: 4/5 -
Both Turn Based/Real-time modes, smooth and very easy interface, 17 different missions, multiplayer : up to 18 players, 8 specific maps, 5 different play modes, annoying Random encounters, 3CD+fourth bonus CD with 100% crap
