Summoner is a role-playing fantasy game developed by Volition (creators of the Descent series). The story of Summoner is set in a completely unique world of Volition's own crafting, and central to the story is the legend of the Summoners. a breed who have toppled empires and challenged gods, and possess ancient rings, which allow then to call forth demons, dragons and elementals. The story of Summoner centers around one particular summoner, a guy named Joseph, a young man who had an unfortunate accident - he wiped out his entire village (that was to be expected ) Granted, it wasn't really his fault, the village was under attack, and he used some unique fledgling powers to summon a demon to combat the invading force... The demon that Joseph summoned slaughtered his people, and Joseph was exiled. You will play as the role of Joseph. You'll call upon the magics of your ancestors in order to unleash various monsters upon your foes - sometimes with dramatic results. You'll have to use the ancient rings in order to summon creatures, and using the rings in particular combinations will have different consequences. During your travels, you'll eventually put together a party that is composed of four characters: You as Joseph, Jekhar, Flece, and Rosalind, so you won't feel to be alone :) The story is divided into chapters with cutscenes that tell the larger tale, and events that happen between levels. Summoner features a full 3D engine, dynamic camera system, party-based multiplayer adventures, a variety of weapons, spells, monsters and characters, the ability to control up to five characters or summoned creatures in your party and unique locations, ranging from vast dungeons to sprawling cities. The game's visuals are really beautiful, a new, unique engine created specifically for Summoner evokes very impressive special effects, for an example Joseph has over 50 different magical spells, each with their own animation and special effect. Summoner uses a 3D camera system that lets you get in behind the character for a third person over-the-shoulder perspective or zoom out to an almost top-down view of the action. Individual character movements are also realistic. When I've played this game (patched to version 1.1) on my PC (900MHz system with GeforceMX), the camera slowed-down when was too many NPC on the screen at once. But I didn't try to play it on another PC so really hard to say if game is really slow or not. Summoner has a number of good ideas, although most of them you've seen elsewhere. For an example there are plenty of monsters to kill like in Diablo but with more intelligent combat system, there are conversations with NPC's like in Baldur's Gate etc, I bet you won't be bored. Summoner is definitely a game for RPG lovers, before buy you can always try playable demo (63MB).
snd: 4/5 - Immersive orchestral soundtrack, very good sound effects
gfx: 4/5 -
Impressive special effects, 3rd person view of four-character party, dynamic camera
playability: 4/5 -
Solid story, wide variety of weapons and items to discover, real-time combats, ability to pause the action, 50 spells, ~40 hours to complete, co-op multiplayer up to four players

|I came across Summoner (PS2) at the mall used and thought it looked cool. When I started playing I was hooked. Very nice looking game and very in depth quests and storyline. I'm a long time Everquest player and I see things in this game that EQ could even use. Overall a very good game for my 14 bucks. =) |

|You need to decrease the experience points, by about 300%, needed for higher levels. How do kill the invincible undead guys? Some of the normal creatures in the game do about 3 to 4 times more damage than the key characters. I need to use an invincibility trainer, and the game is still annoying.|

|any real rpg fan would give tripple 5 to this game. it's fantastic game.
To viking: if you're having trouble playing, you have chosen wrong skill path, thats all. trainers are lame.|
