The Battle of Britain |
(hx) 02:16 AM CET - Jan,28 2001
The Battle of Britain has been designed by Rowan Software, well known for its last year's flight-sim mega-hit Mig Alley, but they also designed some older sims like Dawn Patrol and Flying Corps. Battle of Britain recreates the events of July 10 to September 15, 1940, when the world watched as the British Empire stood against the might of the German Army and Air Force. The game features simulations of the Luftwaffe's 1,000 air raids, authentic aircraft including Spitfire, Hurricane, Me109, Me110, and the Ju87 Stuka, fully interactive campaigns that can be played from both sides, arcade or simulation mode and multi-player options including deathmatch, teamplay and quick mission.
The game graphics are quite good, but don't expect so good graphics like in Microsoft's Combat Flight Simulator 2 and Microprose's B-17 Flying Fortress: The Mighty 8th. Why? It's because Rowan used the MiG Alley engine again for this sim (MiG Alley is a two-year-old game). The aircraft in the game look good and fairly realistic, but they have a shimmer about them that doesn’t look quite right, also the ground damage shots are not very pretty, smoke looks awful and clouds will cut some 50% percent off your framerate. It's pity because the clouds are look darn good in this game. (the clouds were an integral part of the combat during the Battle of Britain period) But the sound effects are impressive and excellent well done. Although what Rowan did here has not yet been seen in any other flight sim - during a single mission you can see hundreds of planes in the sky, Battle of Britain looks to be too much difficult for non-hardcore flightsim gamers, I cannot recommend this game to absolute beginners who never played any flight simulations. Recommended hardware configuration is PIII-800/256RAM, 700MB HDD and 64 MB 3D accelerator. Before buy be sure to download this playable demo
snd: 4/5 - Impressive, the explosions and sounds of the weapons are well done
gfx: 3/5 -
Quite good, very poor ground damage, annoying video clips
playability: 3/5 -
Very detailed historical simulation, authentic aircraft, fully interactive campaigns, multiplayer, clumsy interface, too much hard for beginners
