They note that this first turn-based tactical BATTLETECH/MechWarrior PC game in more than two decades is thanks to the support of over 55,000 Kickstarter backers. This is ava

Downloaded from Steam just now...
Intro movie is pretty lousy. No voiceover, no oomph (from explosion or mech footsteps), no nothing.
Correct resolution was not detected.
Changing resolution puts game into windowed mode, have to alt+tab out and back.
No option to disable Depth of Field and no FOV setting.
So far so bad.
Let me start a campaign...
I was going to update this when I got:

Seems to work again, so here we go...
- Character generation is VERY limited.
- Camera zoom, pan, rotation are too slow even when set to maximum.
- Mech walks through the trees as is it was not even there, lol - some physics.
- Stupid story popups at each turn...
- ESC key does not trigger menu at times...
- Attacking requires several clicks (not intuitive at all!).
- Graphics are pretty lousy - does not feel like improvement since MechCommander 2. Mechs look okay, but the environment, in particular trees are just ugly. Not sure why this game is nearly 26.5 gigs - surely not the textures...
- Environment barely reacts to explosions - it should at the very least light up the trees, if not knock them down... Again, pretty bad physics.
- Can't target anything else but enemies - why can't I knock a few trees on a mech? WTF?
- Way too long delay between things (jump, fire, damage, explode, next unit, enemy turn, etc.) - seems like this game was built for very patient people.
- Mechs just seem to stand there - I can walk in front of them with no reaction whatsoever; no overwatch? WTF?
All right, I give up. This game sucks big time on my scale. Disappointing, as expected.
Using Unity 3D is a big plus for me, but the choice of the engine does not warrant a good game alone - this title is a perfect example for that.
I'm glad I did not pay a single penny.
I don't understand why it's rated 'Mostly positive' on Steam. Must be very biased hardcore fans. Let's see those sales and ratings three months from now.
I guess there's a reason why there has not been a turn-based Mech game for so long.
Let's hope MechWarrior 5 will be better...

Seems Microsoft finally realized Windows kernel just cannot be fixed and decided to go with Linux instead.
Good riddance.
A few more years and we have Win32 apps running on Linux, too (officially, from Microsoft) and another 5-10 years later (since no more Win32 apps coming) Windows will die out for good.
RIP Windows kernel, it's been a good run.
I'll keep my Windows 7 though for another decade or so... |
