According to an announcement on Mozilla Discourse, a certificate used to sign Firefox add-ons expired some hours ago and is causing new add-ons to fail to install and existing add-ons to stop working. As a result, users have reported on Reddit that they have been left without functioning add-ons such as content blocker

had the problem, freaked out.
Enable firefox reporting and sending reported blah blah in firefox options solved it for me. Then again, by now, securities should have been renewed for everyone.

Nope, they still don't work:
- Classic Theme Restorer
- Enhanced Steam
- NoScript
- uBlock Origin
- Universal Bypass

IMHO, Firefox is shooting itself in the leg with all this.
It renders all security features obsolete making the entire browser useless and with that, a moot point.
Suddenly a PC is exposed to all the rubbish on the internet.
Fuck you, Mozilla.

go to options > privacy & security > enable "Firefox Data Collection and Use" things
I restarted firefox, did nothing really and it applied hotfix and everything came back. Then I disabled Firefox Data Collection and Use again.

No such settings in ESR.

I found this:
https://blog.mozilla.org/addons/2019/05/04/update-regarding-add-ons-in-firefox/

Quote:
Clarified that the Studies fix applies only to Desktop users of Firefox distributed by Mozilla. Firefox ESR, Firefox for Android, and some versions of Firefox included with Linux distributions will require separate updates. (May 4, 12:03 EDT)

Some users are reporting that they do not have the “hotfix-update-xpi-signing-intermediate-bug-1548973” study active in “about:studies”. Rather than using work-arounds, which can lead to issues later on, we strongly recommend that you continue to wait. If it’s possible for you to receive the hotfix, you should get it by 6am EDT, 24 hours after it was first released. For everyone else, we are working to ship a more permanent solution. You have not heard of Agnitum Outpost, either Wink
I guess it's because you are not even looking for these things - which is quite all right, I myself am considering giving up living on the edge; as you said, it takes a lot of time.

I used to use weird safe browsers but eventually the functionality suffers too much, since, after all, I do like some of the fun stuff like YouTube Smile So that NightFox (PaleMoon actually) or whatever was it called went out of window.
I use this now
https://brave.com/

Very good, but don't expect too much plugins.

PS. It's not my main browser. I don't trust it for some things, and somethings don't work as they should.

I also assume you know about it, but just in case you don't, there you go Very Happy

This stupid fiasco actually made me look at how well Vivaldi could serve as my main, and the answer is "probably better than Firefox". All the same plugins, better bookmark handling in some ways, customizable, private, built in notes, web panels, etc etc. And the universal quick commands search field is superb.

I'm sold!

How do you get the Firefox addons in there?
Do the old Firefox addons (that worked on 52.9.0) work there?
(seems it forces me to search Chrome addons)

I opted for the 'Dark' theme yet the bookmarks panel is white (making me blind). How do you make that follow the Theme setting?

How do I put the 'Bookmarks' button next to the 'Home' button in the top bar (so I click once to pop the bookmark menu)?

Is there a decent download manager replacement? Not a mass downloader, just a simple replacer i.e. http://dmextension.mozdev.org (this is what I use now)

These are critical for me, if you know how to fix them, please let me know.

Thanks!

Edit
for a browser that aims to 'take back your privacy' I had to disable an awfully lot of setting. Or, perhaps the direction of the 'back' implies that they take in back from me. Wink

Edit2
I've been fiddling with Vivaldi.

Solved:
- Found addon for bookmarks button and menu: Tidy Bookmarks Lite (still can't place the button where I want it to though)
- Found addon Absolute Enable Right Click & Copy
- Found addon Enhanced Steam
- Found addon Universal Bypass
- Found addon Skip Redirect
- Found addon Chrome Download Manager

Additional problems:
- How do I put the 'Bookmarks' button next to the 'Home' button in the top bar? (move from addon bar to the other)
- Could not find a way to force saving password (autocomplete on addons don't work); Firefox had a RememberPass addon for this. Storing shit for GMail and my own bank is a must. They don't work even when "Offer to save passwords" and "Auto Sign-in" are enabled.
- There is no way to disable tabbed browsing. There's an addon called Tab-less but that causes windows to resize and hence when forcing tabs to windows so it flickers a lot, plus it does not really behave the way I want it to. Any other workaround?
- No GreaseMonkey addon
- No Thumbnail Zoom Plus addon
- No Text Link addon
- Linkification substitute exists, but useless
- No Re-pagination addon
- No Image Zoom addon (addons with the same name are either different or defunct)
- No cliget addon (CurlWget does not work under some circumstances)

If you have found replacements for these with different names, please let me know. Thanks!

I've done a few speed tests on SpeedTest.net
Firefox ESR 52.9.0 32bit: Ping: 2ms Download: 820.95MB/s Upload: 326.52MB/s
Vivaldi 2.4.1488.40 64bit: Ping: 1ms Download: 781.77MB/s Upload: 323.84MB/s
I repeated the tests twice, same results.

All right, I found a solution.
1. Close Firefox
2. Edit c:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<ProfileName>\extensions.json
3. Mass replace:
"appDisabled":true
with
"appDisabled":false
4. Mass replace:
"signedState":-1
with
"signedState":2
5. Save, close and start Firefox. Have a look at the addon list and take a mental note of the of the extensions that require a restart. And close Firefox again.
6. Edit c:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<ProfileName>\extensions.json
7. Mass replace:
"active":false,"userDisabled":false
with:
"active":true,"userDisabled":false
8. Save, close and start Firefox. Go back to the addon list and using the mental note, for each extension that required a restart earlier: do one right click, Disable and right click, Enable cycle.
9. Close Firefox and from here on it'll work as before.

Tested on Firefox 52.9.0 ESR.
