It's doing well because there was, unsurprisingly, a large number of people who understood that it wasn't trying to be Fallout 5. It has progressed in leaps and bounds since its alpha-like launch.

They spent $50 and some free beers to the indentured developers they used for this and had them copy-paste Fallout 4 into an unbelievably shitty multiplayer game. I'm sure they're doing very well off it. Abusing and milking your customer pays well, but it doesn't pay well repeatedly. Because your customers work up a good hate for you and refuse to buy your shit ever again.
