But the human eye doesn't produce lens flares. I remember when all of this started back in the 90's and lens flares were in every space sim or used around candy lacquer car models in racing games. It was an ongoing joke.
Now we're back full circle going on about effects that really we should have left behind.
Besides, this is all lovely if you build a botanic garden simulator. You know, you can walk around going ooooh.. at all the textures and shadows. Instead it's a fps and while you notice it the odd time, the rest of the time your eyes are in the distance looking for movement from potential enemy.
Explosions, tracer/ballistic effects are ok and more what should be worked on.
Games like Oblivion or Metro can afford to show off good engines, but not Crysis. It tends to get a bit hectic and frame-rate is more important.
I personally think think Far Cry 3 got it spot on.

save for sniper warrior (or whatever that POS is named) who bought their engine? Age of Conan is perhaps the only title worth mentioning and I honestly don;t remember any other title save for the two I mentioned already.

The fraze at 8:30 explains it all: film grain is better then foto-realism Sad
