As promised,
Valve has published the results of a survey of over 370,000 Steam users' system s. It seems that most users still running old Geforce4 MX/Ti and Radeon 9600/9800 videocards. Processors are split almost down the middle, with 51.88% from Intel and 48.11% from AMD, however most people still running

It's NO wonder that people complain that their machines can't run games properly when they have seriously poor hardware as that poll suggests Shocked

The size of HDD is incredible!! Most owning a 30-40Gig HDD in **TOTAL** You can safely say that they are probably of the slower ATA66 variety.
I've had a 120Gig WD Caviar 8mb cache special edition for over 2 years and it cost pennies!
Also most run their screens in **16bit** Shocked The majority still live in stone age times.

Amazing how the GF4 MX series tops the poll and HL2 requires a DX9 card!! I guess NONE of them will be playing then....ROFL.

I bet VALVE can't believe their eyes.

Stumpus - I TOTALLY agree. People think they can get away with not upgrading. Hell, I think just about every 6 months I upgrade something on my PC. I currently have 3 120 gig SATA drives in my system and I still don't have enough space. Smile The video card results of that survey completely dumbfounded me. GeForce 4 MX?!!?!?! I had a good laugh.

We haveto remember that they surveyed Steam members/customers only. Most of those are CS kiddies. That game can run on the minimal specs and crappy video cards. That will be the majority.

I want them to redo the survey after HL2 comes out and see if it changes.

I run a 1.8ghz, geforce 4mx and borrowed 512MB SDRAM. It's sad, since I'm real big on video gaming and LAN parties, I don't upgrade like I used to =( I have 10 computers but they get out dated o so fast. Keeping up on the hardware may be a reason people pirate the games, becuase computer gamming is the most expensive hobby compared to consoles if you aren't getting software illegally. If piracy was ended, consoles would become king, but I really really hate consoles... I'm a cheap ass btw.

you own an GF4MX, of course you are a cheap ass. you dont need to tell us that. And if piracy ended, consoles would die because games are already a ****** rip off.

you can thank most of the lame 20-30gb hdd sizes on vendors like dell, gateway, etc..

and it looks like CS is going to bite valve in the ass because most people who play CS are either lame noobs or the type too tight to upgrade.
