Dudes at Daily Telefrag have posted an interview about Akella's upcoming strategy project Age of Sail 2: The Privateer. It's not just an add-on - it's standalone multiplayer-oriented project set in the famous Age of Sail universe.
VaNo: Okay, hope you guys will do that. But let's get down to the game itself. What exactly do we see in the Age of Sail 2: Privateer?
Andrey Belkin: Let's start with the outset. As I have mentioned, the project was initially planned as Age of Sail 2 add-on. After considerable time of working over it, we have made a leap beyond the addition conception, and have set AoS2: Privateer a standalone project. The game is powered by hugely modified version of STORM engine, which was used in Sea Dogs and Age of Sail 2. By modifying the engine, we have tried to implement all the modern technologies, with the intention in mind to have as many ships on the screen simultaneously as it is possible. In the beginning, we were targeting Age of Sails 2 (which is itself rather specific) at a very specific audience - wargamers. Sea Knights (that was tentative title for AoS2: Privateer) is intended for wider public, it is much easier to play. The game uses simplified interface and ship control system. I have to mention, though, that we didn't change basic Age of Sail 2 conception, which was very successful. You can tune up the game interface, controls, and battle logics making it look and feel just like AoS2. That is, you can turn manual ship and sail controls, statistics, etc. back on. On the other hand, if the player wants more arcade-style action, he can make the game run as common RTS. Our project is a multiplayer-oriented game, so the coolest part of the game is on-line skirmish.
