Games Domain has conducted an interview with Nikita's vice president and Iron Strategy's project manager Oleg Kostin and international public relations manager Pavel Yupatov about Parkan: Iron Strategy, the upcoming RTS/Sim/FPS game.
Games Domain: Your latest game is based on the Parkan universe. Can you take us back and discuss the original Parkan and its sequels?
Oleg Kostin: The original Parkan or Parkan, The Imperial Chronicles (also called Parkan I) is a hybrid game combining features of a flight simulator, RPG, economic strategy and a first-person shooter. Its closest analogue (and a very approximate analogue at that) is perhaps Privateer, although some veteran players compare it to Elite.
The main idea underlying the game design is very simple: from flight simulation to pilot simulation. In other words, we put our money on the players who project themselves into their hero. And, naturally, we did everything we could to facilitate such projection. That is why the action in the game is always "from the first person".
By and large, our expectations turned out to be correct: in Russia, this project was hugely successful and many of the foreign commentators spoke of Parkan I as an original and very exciting game. What's more, the game is still selling and we continue to receive most gratifying responses from the users who only recently bought it.
Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, Parkan, The Imperial Chronicles is all but unknown in Europe and the United States so that Parkan: Iron Strategy is now starting, so to speak, from a clean sheet.
