Apple Drops 4 Generations of Apple Watches from watchOS 27 - tech|

Apple announced at WWDC 2026 that watchOS 27 will drop support for four generations of Apple Watch models, including the relatively recent Series 9 and the original Apple Watch Ultra.
Only newer models — Apple Watch Series 10 and later, Apple Watch Ultra 2 and later, and the Apple Watch SE 3 — will be compatible with the new operating system.
**Dropped Apple Watch models for watchOS 27** (no longer supported):
- **Apple Watch Series 9**
- **Apple Watch Ultra** (1st generation)
- **Apple Watch SE** (2nd generation)
- All older models (Series 8 and earlier, SE 1st gen, etc.)
**Supported models for watchOS 27:**
- Apple Watch Series 10
- Apple Watch Series 11
- Apple Watch Ultra 2
- Apple Watch Ultra 3
- Apple Watch SE 3
This represents a more aggressive cut in support compared to previous years, surprising many users who expected longer software lifespans for their expensive watches.
iPadOS 27 is also dropping support for several models, including M1-powered iPads and older generations.
Dropped iPad models for iPadOS 27** (no longer supported):
- **iPad (8th generation)** – 2020 model with A12 Bionic
- **iPad Air (3rd generation)** – 2019 model with A12 Bionic
- **iPad mini (5th generation)** – 2019 model with A12 Bionic
- **iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation)** – 2018 model with A12X
- **iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation)** – 2018 model with A12X
These models will stay on iPadOS 26 (and continue receiving security updates), but they won't get the new features in iPadOS 27.
In contrast, iOS 27 continues to support devices as old as the iPhone 11, highlighting inconsistent support policies across Apple’s product lines. |
