| Weekend Reading - The Last of Us episode 2 tomorrow! - briefly|
|(hx) 01:04 PM CET - Jan,21 2023 |
| As I promised, I will try to write a summary of the news again,
although it is a bit harder now than years ago. Why? Because there is
not so much text news on websites anymore (especially when it comes to
technology), a lot of news is now on Twitter, and a lot of news is
covered on YouTube. It's just a lot more complicated to keep track of
everything than it was earlier. So God help me to be able to publish
information to you as I find it and understand it...i.e. serious and unbiased.
However, after a holiday where it was warm and the sea, here at home it
is cold, snow, dark, pissed off people (yes this is Central
Europe), not much fun here...so maybe it is better to be at the PC and write Gameguru news :-)
By the way, are you watching The Last of Us? It looks really
good and I'm looking forward to the second part! (teaser
trailer) For info, the second episode of The Last of Us, titled
Infected, will be released on January 22nd - tomorrow!

- The Callisto Protocol Update 1.19 Brings New Game Plus Mode
And Bug Fixes - The Callisto Protocol's new update brings the
highly anticipated New Game Plus mode alongside a wide array of bug
fixes. Developer Striking Distance Studios has shared the patch notes
on the title's Steam page. The New Game Plus mode allows players to
take on the horrifying journey on Callisto with all the gear and
equipment they have gathered in their first playthrough. Players must
beat the game once to unlock the feature, but that should be easier
now, as the new patch also addresses some of the issues that inflate
the game's difficulty. For instance, vaulting over obstacles now offers
temporary damage immunity to Jacob Lee.
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt PC Patch Nears - A tweet from
Marcin Momot has a response to a query about the status of a patch
to bring the next-gen (current) console enhancements to the PC edition
of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. According to the Global Communications
Director of CD PROJEKT RED, this Windows version of the recent console
update for the RPG is in the final stages of development:

- Riot Games Confirms That No Personal Data Has Been Stolen In
Recent Attack - Riot Games has shared that its systems in the
development environment have been compromised earlier this week.
However, the company has also confirmed that no personal data has been
stolen from users. The company's official Twitter account states that the recent attack will
have a negative impact on updates for multiple games. "Unfortunately,
this has temporarily affected our ability to release content," reads
the tweet. This might mean that players should expect patches to arrive
between longer periods of time in the upcoming weeks. While the company
reiterates that it is investigating the social engineering attack, it
says that it doesn't have "all the answers right now," and wants to
confirm that no personal or player data have been affected by the
attackers. This means that usernames, passwords, and other types of
data were not claimed by the person or the people behind the attack.
- Pet fish commits credit card fraud on owner using a
Nintendo Switch - In a freak series of seemingly random events,
a Switch owner's pet fish accessed his eShop account and added funds to
it using his credit card. The crime was caught on video during an
unsupervised live stream. Hundreds of viewers watched as the little
fish stole their owner's identity while he was gone.
- NVIDIA lists RTX A6000 ADA GPU at $6,800 - The RTX A6000 ADA is the successor to RTX A6000
based on Ampere architecture. Confusing naming aside, the new RTX
workstation GPU not only has more cores, but also faster memory. The
memory is actually the most important feature of this card. It may not
be GDDR6X based, but it ships with 48GB of buffer, twice as much as RTX
4090. NVIDIA RTX A6000 ADA features AD102 GPU with 18176 cores, this is
11% more than GeForce RTX 4090. However, this is not the full silicon,
as two Streaming Multiprocessors out of 142 were disabled. The memory
supports error correction (EEC) and it is rated at 20 Gbps. This means
that the maximum theoretical bandwidth is 960 GB/s, a 25% increase over
last gen A6000 with 16 Gbps modules. The card retains 300W power limit,
but it is now also powered by the new PCIe Gen5 16-pin power connector.NVIDIA
RTX A6000 ADA is now listed at $6,800, a 46% increase over last gen
mode. This is also 4.25x more than RTX 4090
- Radeon GPU cracking not caused by drivers, storing conditions
and cryptomining to blame - In
the last video from German GPU repair service a sudden spike of
Radeon RX 6000 graphics cards was reported. There was nothing
extraordinary about these cards that would explain why they were all
failing after just a couple of days after purchase. This is why Kris
made the first video to learn more from the community. After a short
survey among affected customers KrisFix determined that it was likely
not the type of workload that broke the cards, as every customer was
using the card differently. However, what they had in common was the
drivers. Each of the cards was using the same latest version available
at the time. The long story short is that it was not the driver after
all. As it turns out, the graphics cards that were sent over to KrisFix
also had one other thing in common that was previously not mentioned.
Many of these cards were sold by the same seller, with a strong
suspicion that these cards were previously used for cryptomining.
- NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti expected to offer RTX 3070
performance for less than $500? - MyDrivers
citing their sources claim that the upcoming GeForce RTX 4060 Ti will
cost less than $500. This would be the cheapest RTX 40 desktop GPU to
be released thus far, but still not cheap. Just assuming that the price
is closer to $500, this would mean a considerable price increase for
the X60 Ti SKU, since the last-gen model was priced at $399.
spilled the beans on this card’s performance. It is said that RTX 4060
Ti would perform similar to RTX 3070. What is interesting about this
claim is that RTX 3070 launched with $499 MSRP, but the card still sold
at higher price to this day.

- Latest Nvidia driver for Linux improves suspend reliability on
systems that use UEFI - Nvidia has made its latest Linux driver
available for download, the version number is 525.85.05 and comes in at
395.9 MB in size; the driver is available for x64
systems. The release notes contain four items and the most notable one
is that the reliability of suspend and resume on UEFI systems on
certain display panels has been improved. If you have an Nvidia GPU and
you have any display issues following a system suspend, this driver
could address those issues.

with how the roughly 2.5 billion users of Chrome and

- Another day, another crypto firm goes under: Genesis files for
bankruptcy - Cryptocurrency lending company Genesis is seeking Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection
as faltering prices and the collapse of FTX Trading continue
to rattle the industry. Genesis filed for bankruptcy on Thursday in the

- Microsoft to End the Sale of Consumer Windows 10 Licenses on
Jan 31st! - For those of you who may still want to obtain an
official copy after January 31st though… Well, let's just say that I
suspect that the internet will not fall short of third-party vendors
selling the Windows 10 operating system any time soon. There are
probably several million Windows 10 licenses that have yet to be
activated, and of course, while you can't purchase one direct from
Microsoft anymore, you will still be able to activate it at least all
the way up until its official October 2025 end-of-life.
- Samsung Wallet Payment app expands to eight new markets

card payments, Samsung Pass for identity management, storing digital
home and car keys, keeping your vaccine records, and digital asset
management to view cryptocurrency prices and your crypto balances.
- Google is laying off 12,000 employees - Saying that this
has been a
difficult week for big tech firms and their employees would be an
understatement. In the past couple of days, we have heard that
Microsoft is axing 10,000 positions and Amazon is laying off 18,000
employees as well. Now, Google has announced a major layoff too. In
a Google blog post which is quoted verbatim from an email by CEO
Sundar Pichai, the company has made the decision to reduce its
workforce by 12,000 people. This is roughly 6% of its total headcount.
Layoff emails have already been sent out to affected U.S. employees and
will be sent out shortly to employees in other countries, with the
delay being due to local laws.
