| TechNews - New AMD Ryzen CPUs - tech|
|(hx) 07:29 AM EDT - Apr,14 2018 |
- New AMD Ryzen CPUs Announced - AMD
announces their second generation Ryzen CPUs, saying they are
already accepting preorders for the new processors, and they offer the
following details on why you may be interested.
- Intel Expands 8th Gen Core: Core i9 on Mobile, Iris Plus,
Desktop, Chipsets, and vPro - The headline is that Intel’s mobile
platform will now get Core i9 and
Core i7 products with six cores at 45W, along with some 28W U-series
mobile chips with Iris Plus graphics. Desktop also gets some extra
chips, filling out the Coffee Lake stack for desktop users, and
littered around both mobile and desktop. Also on the plate is new
branding for 8th Gen Core products being used with Intel’s Optane
drives, new mobile and desktop chipsets which include wireless
capabilities and USB 3.1, and Intel’s new ‘Thermal Velocity Boost’
which promises more frequency in devices that can handle the thermal
- Apple Rumored To Ditch Intel Processors In Macs By 2020 - If
you've been following Apple for the past decade, then you know that the
company has become adept at producing its own silicon for iPhones and
iPads. Apple's A-Series SoCs are performance juggernauts, often
outpacing their Qualcomm Snapdragon 8xx rivals in cross-platform
benchmarks versus Android devices. That same chip design prowess, which
has paid dividends for Apple's mobile fortunes, might also transfer to
its PC products as well, according to a new report. Bloomberg,
which often obtains some rather accurate details about Apple's
unreleased product lines, says that the company will begin ditching
Intel as a supplier of processors for its Macs as soon as 2020. Intel
shares were down 6 percent on the news. These ARM processors are part
of an initiative reportedly dubbed Kalamata. It is highly likely that
the first products to make the transition would be thin and light
notebooks like the 12-inch MacBook, and then expands to the rest of the
MacBook Pro (and Air) families. Things would definitely get more
interesting when it comes to Apple's desktop family, which include the
iMac, iMac Pro and the Mac Pro (which is due for a redesign). In the
case of the iMac Pro, it's currently available with up to an 18-core
Intel Xeon W processor. There is nothing in Apple's current arsenal
that can deliver that sort of firepower, but there's no telling what
the company's secret chip skunkworks is up to at this point.
- The Best Storage Devices: SSD, HDD, External Drives & NAS
- The SSD 960 Evo showed no faults throughout in testing back in
and its price vs. performance ratio remains largely unparalleled, being
even more affordable today at $200 for around 40 cents a gig for the
500GB version. Offering sequential reads and writes of 3,200MB/s
1,800MB/s, the 960 Evo is available in 250GB, 500GB and 1TB versions,
though the smaller drive will cut down on performance, so our buying
recommendation exclusively applies to 500GB and larger variants.
- ASIC Miners and Cryptocurrency - This is actually a very
good article over at Motherboard about ASICs and what sort of wide reaching effects those could have on
the cryptocurrency markets, specifically Monero and Ethereum.
- HARD DRIVE Mining? This is getting ridiculous... - Hard
drive mining... could this be the solution to the GPU crisis?
- Samsung's DeX Pad for Galaxy S9 Arrives May 13 for $99 - Samsung
today revealed that the DeX Pad docking station for its new Galaxy S9
and S9+ smartphones will be available starting next month. The company
is accepting preorders online for the accessory, with a stated ship
date of May 13. This revised accessory turns the S9/S9+ into a mobile
PC. It connects the phone to monitors, keyboards, and mouses (wired or
wireless) and allows it to act like a full computer, complete with
multitasking. New on this year's product is the ability to use the
S9/S9+ screen as a trackpad when in computer mode. The phone connects
to the dock via USB-C and will charge when in use. The DeX Pad costs
- Honor 7A makes its debut with 18:9 display and $130 price tag
7A packs quite an assortment of features like its 5.7-inch 720p 18:9
display, a Snapdragon 430 processor, and can be picked up in either
a 2GB or 3GB RAM configuration, with 32GB of internal storage, and
microSD card support. The phone will also have a dual camera setup
utilizing a 13MP and 2MP sensor on the rear and an 8MP front-facing
- uTorrent Flagged as Threat by Microsoft and Antivirus Vendors
- TorrentFreak is reporting that this week several
Windows users that the uTorrent BitTorrent client was suddenly being
flagged as a threat by Windows Defender as "Potentially Unwanted
Software." The article goes on to state that other Antivirus software
has been labeling uTorrent as a threat, and the uTorrent download page
now triggers a warning from MalwareBytes real-time protection. If you
use BitTorrent to get your latest Linux distro, you may want to stray
away from uTorrent. I know personally I never updated passed 1.6 until
switching to qBittorrent a couple years ago. Based on what I saw from
later versions of uTorrent, this news isn't all that surprising.
- Try Google's New OS In Your Browser - Google has
been fighting with itself for a long time having Android and Chrome OS
overlapping each other, and now Slash Gear is reporting that Google is apparently
working on a third wheel. "Andromeda" was a rumor that had started from
people thinking that Google would merge their two current operating
systems together, however Google Fuchsia is a new OS built from the ground
up that you can play with today in your browser.
- Gmail.com redesign includes self-destructing emails - Set expiration dates and password requirements on
your sensitive emails.
- Google Details April Security Patch with Pixel Fixes Aplenty -
today shared information about the April security patch headed to Pixel
handsets over the next few days. The update tackles dozens of
vulnerabilities. Google is pushing two separate updates, dated April 1
and April 5, that improve Google Play Protect, Google Mobile Services,
the Android media framework, Android runtime, and the core kernel. In
particular, Google says it worked with Qualcomm to resolve scores of
existing vulnerabilities impacting Qualcomm hardware and drivers back
to 2016. The April security patches are being made available to
Google's Pixel and Nexus phones first. It is up to individual device
makers to implement the fixes on their own hardware
- Phone Makers Mislead Consumers About Security Patches - Security
Research Labs says Android phone makers often miss security patches but
still tell owners the phones are up-to-date. Researchers Karsten Nohl
and Jakob Lell examined the code of some 1,200 phones from more than a
dozen phone makers for every security patch released during 2017. They
discovered phones from nearly all makers missed at least some patches.
Phones from Google, Sony, and Samsung ranked fairly well, missing an
average of just one patch. Phones from Xiaomi, Nokia, and OnePlus
missed between one and three patches per update, while devices from
HTC, Motorola, LG, and Huawei missed three to four, and phones from TCL
(Alcatel) and ZTE often missed more than four patches per update.
High-end devices with processors from Samsung or Qualcomm were more
likely to updated properly, while low-cost devices with processors from
MediaTek were less likely to be updated properly. Nohl and Lell say
what's worse than the missed patches are the phone makers' claims to
the contrary. "We find that there's a gap between patching claims and
the actual patches installed on a device. It's small for some devices
and pretty significant for others," said Nohl to Wired.
- How To Increase His 16GB iPhone's Storage By 800% - Scotty
Allen, who runs the YouTube channel Strange Parts, journeyed around
Shenzhen, China to get the parts he needed to boost his iPhone's storage.
It was harder than he expected.
- iOS Update Bricks Repaired iPhones Again - Motherboard reports that if you have had your
screen repaired on your iPhone 8 by anyone other than Apple, and have
updated to iOS 11.3, you likely already know your phone no longer
responds to touch commands. Apple released iOS 11.3 at the end of
March, and the update is killing touch functionality in iPhone 8s
repaired with some aftermarket screens that worked prior to the update.
That means people who broke their phone and had the audacity to get it
repaired by anyone other than Apple is having a hard time using their
phone. "This has caused my company over 2,000 reshipments," Aakshay
Kripalani, CEO of Injured Gadgets, a Georgia-based retailer and repair
shop, told me in a Facebook message. "Customers are annoyed and it
seems like Apple is doing this to prevent customers from doing 3rd

- Apple tells employees to stop leaking information, in a leaked
memo - Apple has issued an internal memo to employees asking them
to stop leaking information to the press. This message was then
to Bloomberg, where it can be read in its entirety.
These leaks come from direct employees, contractors, and suppliers and
include information about future products and software features. In the
strongly worded memo, Apple describes their commitment to stopping and
punishing such leakers. They claim to have caught 29 employees last
year and 12 of them were eventually arrested
- Live - Zuckerberg Before Congress Pt 1 - Facebook
Zuckerberg defends the social platform as a 'positive force in the
world' as he addresses Congress on Tuesday while admitting he made
'a big mistake' by not taking seriously the social network's
responsibility to its two billion users
- Instagram to Let Users Download Their Content - Instagram,
which is owned by Facebook, is preparing a tool that will eventually
make it simpler for users to download all the photos, videos, messages,
and other content they've uploaded to the imaging-based social network.
"We are building a new data portability tool," said Instagram in an
email to Reuters.
Specifics concerning how the tool might work and when it might be
released were not revealed. The news arrives as Facebook CEO Mark
Zuckerberg spent the last two days answering Congress' questions on
Capitol Hill in the fallout of the Cambridge Analytica scandal. The
social network has taken steps the last few weeks to ensure users have
easier access to and control over their own data.
- Instagram Debuts Advanced Portrait Mode - Instagram
today announced a new feature that makes it easier to capture artistic
selfies or portraits. The tool, called Focus, lets people take pictures
or video of people using either the front or rear camera with gently
blurred backgrounds. Focus seeks out faces in the viewfinder and locks
on to create sharp focus on the face. Once the media is captured, users
can then apply stickers or otherwise dress up their portraits or videos
before sharing. Focus is available on the iPhone 6S, 6S+, 7, 7+, 8, 8+
and X, and select Android devices. Instagram is also rolling out a new
@mention sticker feature for iOS devices. iPhone users can capture
pictures or video and then tag friends using the sticker creation tool.
Stickers with @mentions can be resized and moved around as users deem
fit. Instagram is free to download from the Google Play Store and the
iTunes App Store
- Snapchat's TrueDepth Lenses for iPhone X Now Live - Snapchat
has made a
handful of lenses available specifically for the iPhone X. These
lenses, first previewed last year, take advantage of the TrueDepth
camera of the iPhone X and its 3D face-mapping capabilities. The result
is more accurate and more form-fitting augmented reality masks that
appear on users' faces. There are three AR Snapchat lenses to start, a
gold eye mask, a Day of the Dead skull, and a Mardi Gras-style mask.
Snapchat says the TrueDepth camera allows it to blur the background and
more accurately handle ambient light with these lenses. The new lenses
will only appear to those using Snapchat on an iPhone X. More are
likely to be made available over time. Snapchat is free to download
from the iTunes App Store
- Fortnite studio called out by Gears of War director over
hiring practices - Asks Epic to "please stop trying to hire away my team"
- after major December defection. Bleszinski followed this up with an
insinuation that this alleged employee poaching has to do with his
studio's new "X-Treme Early Access" game Radical
Heights, which bears a striking resemblance to Epic's
hugely popular Fortnite Battle Royale. "There's room
at this genre for more than a few games SMH [shaking my head]," he
wrote in one Tweet, while in another, he added, "We have plenty of ways
to make [Radical Heights] our own but they may never see the
light of day if [Epic] keeps doing this."

- THE MEG - Official Trailer #1 - The first trailer for the
Statham giant shark action movie The Meg is
out, and... surprise! It turns out it’s a far-future science fiction
movie set in a high-tech deep-sea research station that strongly
resembles a space station. The tone is grave and serious, like Alien
mixed with the better parts of Sphere. There are some shocks,
but clearly, this is a tension-packed, grim future-horror movie.

will be released in theaters on June 8th.
