Windows 10 update will reveal what data Microsoft is collecting - tech
(hx) 05:48 PM EST - Jan,24 2018 - Post a comment / read (4)
When Windows 10 was first released, the OS was received well enough on its merits but users were quick to voice concerns regarding Microsoft's new data collection measures, some of which could not easily be turned off. In October 2017, the Dutch data protection authority claimed Windows 10 violated local privacy laws. The year prior, France's data protection commission voiced similar concerns and ordered the software giant to "stop collecting excessive user data" without consent. Microsoft has taken steps to address these concerns -- including the implementation of a "privacy dashboard" -- but they haven't managed to silence them entirely. Microsoft will soon be offering Windows 10 users a new level of transparency in an upcoming OS update. The update will include the "Windows Diagnostic Data Viewer" feature which will let users see exactly what data the company is collecting about them. According to The Verge, Microsoft collects data regarding your peripherals, movie consumption habits, installed apps and more. This update will be made available to Windows 10 Insiders sometime this week but there's no word on when it will be launching for everyone else.

What bothers me even more is that it dials home, bypassing that 'hosts' file and the firewall.
They must fix that.
Actually, if they would fix that (and I could confirm that on my router over an extended period of time), I would not mind any data collection because I would be able to prevent sending the data.
But yeah, fuck their data collection. It's my PC, and I don't want anybody see what apps or videos I have/watch/user. It's our life, leave me and my family alone or get the fuck out of Europe.
I'm surprised it's only the Dutch though - usually it's the German.
I'd expect once MS publishes that list, many EU countries will go to the Brussels demanding a fix for Windows 10 or banning it as whole.
Data about an EU citizen must not leave the EU, the citizen must know exactly who uses that data for what, how that data is protected and all data should be wiped on based on citizen's expressed wish. That's not quite how MS does business, so Win10 might come to an end in the EU in a few years.

Properly disabling and blocking other services and processes will block sending any data you don't want to be sent through the firewall. Assuming you know how to configure firewall and what firewall is.

edit: assuming you are not using windows firewall as the primary and only firewall. Routers don't have good frewalls unless you have a good one and are not afraid of typing.
