- Viking launches a 50TB 3.5-inch SAS SSD - Viking
Technology has managed to develop an
SSD with 50TB of storage, and it may just be enough to tremble the
faint-hearted data hoarders. Viking has dubbed the new drives as the
Ultra-High-Capacity Silo SSDs - or UHC-Silo, in short. The drives are
using planar multi-level cell NAND flash chips, and Viking claims that
it can endure one drive write per day (DWPD), every day, for five
years. As for the speed, the drives are rated to deliver up to 500MB/s
of sequential read and 350MB/s of sequential write. Unfortunately,
these drives aren't exactly for the average consumers – they are meant
for datacenters instead; they come in the 3.5-inch form factor, with a
6Gbps SAS interface. They are also not the fastest drives out there,
but the capacity should make up for it. Viking says that these drives
can help datacenters reduce their power, space, and cooling costs by up
to 80% per terabyte, thanks to the low power consumption of less than
10W when idle, and 16W when at work.
- Facebook Hints At S$300 VR Headset For The Masses - The
impending VR headset from Oculus is designed to be a gadget that anyone
can carry in a bag, and take out during a flight to enjoy some movies
and games; and (of course) get updated on social media in VR. Facebook
is hoping that the new kit will advance VR just like how Apple advanced
smartphones.
The device's design and features are not finalised yet, so details are
scant. But the new headset is rumoured to be completely wireless and
even lighter than the Gear VR headset, which requires a Samsung phone
to operate.
Mark Zuckerberg is betting that VR will be instrumental in the future
of Social Media. But great VR headsets today are either too
unaffordable or too cumbersome (shout out to the HTC Vive here). Even
Facebook's Oculus Rift needs an expensive PC to work, piling more than
a thousand dollars on the cost. At
less than S$300, this exciting VR headset from Oculus is priced far
lower than the HTC Vive, and half of Sony's popular Playstation VR.

- World of Tanks Using HoloLens Mixed Reality - Today World
of Tanks developer Wargaming released a video

with the museum to restore an ultra-rare World War II tank
Sturmmörserwagen 606/4 mit 38 cm RW 61, nicknamed 'Sturmtiger.' Then
they created a mixed reality experience using World of Tanks assets and
even a view of a map together with Microsoft HoloLens to have the tank
look like it was entering the hangar, and showcasing the interior and
mechanical features of the massive steel beast.
- Star Wars: Jedi Challenges Sneak Peek - Disney has
also partnered with Lenovo and LucasFilm to create the AR
headset that was demonstrated during the panel. Goslin promised
unprecedented Star Wars experiences coming with it. The headset allows
players to slot their phones horizontally into it and look through the
reflection. They then premiered prototype footage featuring Hol0-Chess
and AT-AT battles on Hoth, all happening atop a living room landscape.

- New Apple macOS malware alters the operating system - A
recently-discovered macOS
malware called OSX Dok, which alters the operating system to
subvert the security measures put in place, has now started mirroring
banking websites according to researchers, in an attempt to steal
sensitive information from machines which are infected by it. The
malware which uses 'phishing' and 'man in the middle' attacks to sneak
onto an unsuspecting user's computer, was discovered back in May by
ESET. Initially, it only tricked people into allowing access to their
keychain, but since then, has morphed and is now targeting their bank
accounts
Apple, however, has continued to revoke the certificates that the
malware used to gain access to the underlying system, but this seems to
have had little to no effect on it so far. Researchers noted that the
group behind the malicious program has continued to get new
certificates; what they described as a 'surge in activity' with new
compromised certifications being purchased daily.
- A Reddit user claims he has downloaded all 900TB of music - Earlier
this month, streaming audio platform SoundCloud announced that it would
cut 40 percent of its staff and close its San Francisco and London
offices, as part of an effort to stay independent and ensure long-term
success. A few days later though, co-founder and CEO Alex Ljung
admitted that these measures would only save the firm enough money to
survive until the fourth quarter of this year. Fearing for the future
of the site, one Reddit user who goes by the name of “makemakemakeâ€,
claimed on Reddit's “DataHoarder†thread that he
has downloaded all 900TB of SoundCloud's public archive. He
provided a 100GB log file to prove his accomplishment.
The Redditor used Google's cloud computing services and downloaded the
files over a connection of 80Gb/s during the course of one weekend.
Makemakemake does not plan to make the archive available to others,
because as he claimed “it'd be quicker to download everything from
[SoundCloud] yourself. Only have 10G to where the data is now.†The
Reddit user is not the only one trying to archive SoundCloud, as
according to The Verge, Archive Team has announced it will also make a
backup of the company's vast database of music. Archive Team, founded
by Jason Scott in 2009, is a group dedicated to the preservation of
content housed by at-risk services.
- Border Patrol Agents Cannot View Your Cloud Data - U.S.
Customs and Border Protection agents are
not allowed to access or view consumer data that is stored in the
cloud, such as social networks and email. The agency admitted as much
in a letter sent by acting commissioner Kevin McAleenan to Sens. Ron
Wyden of Oregon and Rand Paul of Kentucky. The Senators posed several
questions to the agency early this year after Americans reported a
surge in border agents asking people to unlock their phones and even
share social media passwords upon reentering the U.S. McAleenan insists
officers are allowed to search phones without consent and without a
warrant. For the most part, they are looking for information regarding
terrorism, drug trafficking, and child pornography. However, the agency
is limited to viewing content that is saved directly to the device,
such as call logs, text messages, and photos. "Border searches
conducted by CBP do not extend to information that is located solely on
remote servers," wrote McAleenan. This means Americans' Facebook,
Instagram, and Twitter accounts are off limits to border patrol agents.
McAleenan admitted that Americans do not have to unlock their devices
or hand over their passwords, but they do so at the risk of losing
their device, which may be detained by border patrol agents. The agency
insists that phone searches are "exceedingly rare."

purchases anywhere Samsung Pay is accepted. Samsung Pay uses both NFC
and MST technology and works at most retail credit card terminals.
Beyond retail locations, Samsung says a partnership with Braintree
means Samsung Pay users can take advantage of PayPal to fund in-app and

only add PayPal as their payment method in order to take advantage of

Mexico today, and will reach the U.S. soon.
- Samsung Commits to Recycling Parts from Galaxy Note7 - Samsung
plans to extensively reuse, recycle, and recover, parts and materials
found in last year's failed Galaxy Note7 smartphone. The company confirmed
plans to recycle the phone earlier this year, but has now provided more
details on exactly what it hopes to accomplish. Samsung said it will
reuse parts such as the OLED display, memory components, and camera
modules in future devices. Other components will be sold. Further,
Samsung claims it can recover some 157 tons of gold, silver, cobalt,
and copper from the recalled handsets. The company says it is committed
to pursuing these efforts in ways that are eco-friendly. Samsung will
begin the process of recycling the Galaxy Note7 this month. The phone
was recalled last year after manufacturing flaws led to overheating
batteries and fires. The news comes mere weeks before Samsung is
expected to announced the Galaxy Note 8.
