  • 2nd Gen AMD Ryzen CPU Showing Boot Issues with Old BIOS -  AMD has issued a support bulletin this morning pertaining to its 2nd Generation AMD Ryzen CPUs. It seems that some older UEFI BIOS are not playing nice with the new CPUs. All in all, this is not all that uncommon when it comes to new CPUs and motherboards that support previous generation processors. If you are unable to get your system to POST or boot with a new Ryzen, the solution is simple and hopefully you will have what you need on hand to make this happen.
  • Ryzen 5 2400G Live Testing! - Due to a retail slip-up, tech YouTuber SonofaTech received his AMD Ryzen 5 2400G early and proceeded with a 10-hour live test to demonstrate the chip's ability to run newer titles in 1080p at appreciable framerates. It did particularly well with games such as Overwatch (1080p, high preset, up to 70 FPS) and Dirt Rally (1080p, medium preset, average 57 FPS).
  • Microsoft is bringing HoloLens to two more markets - Microsoft has published its February update for mixed reality. It's the first in a series of monthly blog posts where the company will discuss what's new for its platforms. Most notably, the firm announced that HoloLens will now be available in two new markets: Singapore and the United Arab Emirates. This brings the total number of markets that the device is available in to 41, after 29 countries were added in December. The other significant development is that HoloLens is now available to rent. Businesses in the United States and Canada can rent one from ABCOMRENTS, so they can evaluate the product and decide whether to purchase it, or just to temporarily increase their inventory. Unfortunately, there's still no news of a second-generation HoloLens. The last we heard of such a device was a year ago, and that report said that the next model will be available in 2019. In the nearly two years since the Development Edition was made available, little has changed. In fact, the device is still running the Anniversary Update, and Microsoft still only sells a Development Edition for the same price of $3,000, and the Commercial Suite for $5,000.
  • New Samsung 3D Cinema LED - The 3D Cinema LED has the same viewing angle as the Cinema LED. The 3D Cinema LED provides the opportunity to enjoy the film with less distortion no matter where the viewer is seated, just like the Cinema LED did. "When watching in the conventional 3D theater, the image becomes darker or distorted as people go to the edge of the theater, but 3D Cinema LED has significantly improved the problem."

  • Apple TV App Enables News Section as Promised - The Apple TV app now has a news section that integrates six different news streaming apps. If you don't have the individual apps it will prompt you to download them from the App Store and once they are setup the TV app will allow for single sign-on into any of them. Also, it integrates the Siri ability to start playing a specific network if you like. All in all it's a good capability for Apple fans. While not as extensive as the Sports interface, the News section in the TV app allows users to instantly access live streaming news content from several different networks. You get direct access to CBS News, CNN, Fox News, Cheddar, CNBC, and Bloomberg.
  • Microsoft will finally start letting users resume interrupted Windows updates - We've all been there. When Windows 10 is trying to download and install a big update, it takes a long time, and sometimes you'll have to shut down or reboot your PC before it's finished. Once you boot back up, you'll find an error message in Windows Update with a 'Retry' button, and it's time to start the process over. But according to a report from Windows Central's Andy Weir, that's all about to change. Soon, you'll be able to resume the download/install process, instead of starting from scratch.
  • VLC 3.0 Released with HDR, Chromecast Support - VideoLAN has released version 3.0 of its popular media player, VLC. Some of the new features and improvements include hardware decoding for 4K and 8K playback, 10-bit HDR support, 360-degree video and 3D audio, and Chromecast streaming. VLC 3.0 is the first ever synchronized release between desktop application and mobile ports. Today, VLC is released everywhere, with the same version number and at the same time. It will be simpler for everyone, including VideoLAN developers
  • Chrome 68 Will Mark All HTTP Sites As 'Not Secure' - In the interest of security, Google plans to call out web sites that don't adopt https. Later this year, version 68 of the Chrome web browser will proactively label web sites that don't make use of https encryption. The company has been casually marking such web sites, but will start to call them all out this summer. The goal is to encourage web developers to add https to their web sites, which will improve security for everyone. According to Google, over 68% of Chrome traffic on both Android and Windows is now protected, while over 78% of Chrome traffic on both Chrome OS and Mac is now protected. Fully 81 of the top 100 sites on the web use https by default. Google said it will adjust Chrome's user interface so users understand which sites are insecure and why they are insecure. Google says it has simplified its set-up guides to help web developers secure their sites with https.
  • Half of All Cryptojacking Scripts Are Found on Porn Sites - Data from Qihoo 360's Netlab is being used to confirm the obvious: cryptojacking is rampant on adult sites. To be exact, 50% of all mining scripts live on some kind of porn site. These pages are typically intrusive and ad-ridden, so there is little surprise here, despite time-consuming gaming and video streaming portals being potentially better deployments. Based on the meta keywords each site used to describe its content, porn sites represented the bulk of the detected domains on which researchers found JS-based mining code. Adult sites accounted for 49%, followed by fraud sites (8%), advertising domains (7%), cryptocurrency mining (7%), and film and television streaming sites (6%).
  • Stealthy Data Exfiltration Possible via Magnetic Fields - en Gurion University researchers have developed two pieces of malware that rely on magnetic fields to exfiltrate data from an air-gapped device. One of them is called ODINI and it uses this method to transmit the data to a nearby magnetic sensor. The second piece of malware is named MAGNETO and it sends data to a smartphone, which typically have magnetometers for determining the device's orientation.
  • Hackers Infect Android Phones And Smart TV's to Mine Monero - Hackers have infected thousands of Android phones and smart TVs, turning the devices into Monero miners. Chinese cyber security firm 360Netlab announced that the attack affected more than 7,000 devices in China by taking advantage of an open port 5555. The report says that scan traffic for port 5555 is growing rapidly as the ADB.Miner worm spreads. The researchers told ZDNet the hackers weren't opening the port themselves, which would have been a much more worrying attack. "The 5555 ADB interfaces of those devices have already been opened before [they're] infected," the researchers said. "We have no idea about how and when this port was opened yet."
  • Verizon to Start Locking Its Phones Again to Fight Thieves -  In a statement provided to CNET. "These steps will make our phones exponentially less desirable to criminals."
  • Elon Musk's Satellite Broadband Clears Crucial U.S. Hurdle - Bloomberg is reporting today that Elon Musk's SpaceX application to provide broadband services using satellite technologies was recommended by FCC Chairman Ajit Pai today. Last year SpaceX requested authority to deploy and operate a constellation of 4,425 satellites operating 700-800 miles above Earth. The proposal now has to go before Ajit Pai's four fellow commissioners for approval. If approved I have to wonder how ling it will take to deploy 4,425 satellites. While I love the idea of satellite internet, one thing that they still have not overcome is latency, we will see if the team at SpaceX can solve that problem..

shit, I was thinking of Salma Hayek .... :P Brain fart...

phone unlocking thing, I meant I have a friend that unlocks phones (among other things) for a price. There are phones that do need some hardware boxes to unlock them. I've had two such devices.

you worried me because FFS I'm already dead than! LOL!

Ya I always research my phone first before I buy. If it's locked F that. if there is a known unlock I'll get it. Phones in Canada, at least, are supposed to be unlocked by default anyway.
