TechNews - Half Of Americans Now Watch Netflix - tech
(hx) 07:12 PM CET - Nov,21 2015 - Post a comment / read (17)
This is fairly unsurprising in itself, but the graph that shows just how Netflix is doing in comparison with its competitors might be interesting to you. Although 51% of American Internet users is not the same as 51% of Americans, so half of Americans do not use Netflix :-) And the rest are busy playing Fallout 4 :D FYI, Hulu now offers no commercial streaming, costs an extra $4.

  • Intel Reportedly Prepping 10-Core Broadwell-E Processors - In August 2014, Intel released the first Haswell-E processor, the Core i7-5960X. Unlike its predecessors, the Core i7-5960X jumped to eight cores and 16 threads - but the lower clock speeds that this required paradoxically made the chip a less-than-great alternative for gamers. In many titles, the 4.4GHz clock speed on the Core i7-4790K was a better gaming option than the eight cores but lower top-end clock speed (3GHz base, 3.5GHz Turbo) that the 5960X offered. Intel is now working on the successor to Haswell-E, and if recent rumors are true, the company is going to address this discrepancy with the upcoming Broadwell-E. The upcoming family will launch with multiple SKUs that should address the needs of both gamers and other high-end users who have more use for threads and less for clock speed. According to Chinese site XFastest, the Core i7-6950X will be a 10-core, 20-thread CPU with a base clock of 3GHz, an unknown Turbo frequency, and 25MB of L3 cache. That's two more cores than the current Core i7-5960X, with an equivalent clock speed and the same cache allocation on a per-core basis
  • iPad Pro users report freezing after charging - iPad Pro owners across the world have been reporting a serious bug that appears to affect all models of the device. Users have taken to the Apple Support Communities forum, saying that after charging their iPad Pros overnight, or for a number hours, they return to find the device unresponsive and the screen completely black. A temporary fix appears to be "force restarting" (holding both the home and sleep buttons for 10 seconds). Despite the iPad Pro returning to normal function and displaying 100% charge after the fix, users say the issue returns when they next recharge the device. Apple-enthusiast blog Mac Kung Fu offers another short-term fix, suggesting the device be set to Airplane Mode when charging, leaving questions about the iCloud backup service. In a post on its support site, Apple said that it is "aware of this issue and is investigating", but did not offer any indication of when a fix might be available.
  • Samsung Galaxy S7 Premium To Have 14-Core GPU, 4K Display - According to a new rumor that circulated on Friday, a Samsung Galaxy S7 Premium Edition is being planned by Samsung, and will be offered only in South Korea. This super spec'd version of Sammy's flagship phone is said to feature a 4K display, and a dual-lens camera module made by Sony. At the heart of this Galaxy S7 Premium Edition is a different version of the Exynos 8890 chipset. The Exynos 8890 SoC is rumored to be the chip powering the Samsung Galaxy S7 in all markets other than the U.S. and China. In those two countries, the Snapdragon 820 SoC will be driving the phone. The graphics processor on the Exynos 8890 is the Mali-T880 with 12 cores. A second version of the Exynos 8890 for the Galaxy S7 Special Edition, reportedly comes with a version of the Mali-T880 with 14 cores. ARM has said that the graphics processor is scalable from 1 to as many as 16 cores, so this is not science fiction. The source of this rumor is a posting on a Weibo page. This means, as tasty a dish as such a phone would be, you need to take this rumor with a grain of salt.
  • BlackBerry PRIV Review - The Priv is BlackBerry's new flagship phone, but it's also much more than that. As the company's first phone to use Google's Android instead of a BlackBerry OS, it represents a major new strategic direction. It also comes as the company is considering whether or not to continue making phones at all, so its success is crucial. The Priv has a premium design with a slide-out keyboard, curved-edge screen, and high-end camera. How is it in person?
  • Lumia 950 review: Windows Phone finally has a new flagship - will anyone care? - The Lumia 950 is a nice phone. The screen is very pretty. The camera is great. Its looks don't excite me, but it feels solid. I'm sure Windows 10 Mobile will get better. But I think the iris scanner was a mistake-Microsoft should have gone with a fingerprint reader-and the lack of all-carrier CDMA support hurts. And while Continuum is interesting and fascinates me in some ways, as things stand right now with limited availability both of Universal Windows Apps and hardware to use Continuum with, it's not a reason to buy a Windows phone. Not yet.
  • Microsoft Not Bringing Android Apps To Windows After All? - Microsoft unveiled some huge news back in April, pledging to allow developers to run reworked Android and iOS apps on Windows. While Microsoft is pushing ahead with its iOS porting tools, the company's Android work has been put on hold. Sources familiar with Microsoft's plans have revealed to The Verge that the company has pulled back on dedicating employees to Android app porting, favoring the iOS route instead.
  • Google Photos for Android Can Delete Local Files to Save Space - Google is rolling out an update to Google Photos for Android today that lets people free up on-device storage by deleting local files. A new option in the settings menu called "Free Up Space" lets users set the app to automatically delete local photos that have been backed up to the cloud. The feature is opt-in, and asks for permission before deleting local photos. The Google Photos app now supports deleting photos from memory cards, as well. Google is rolling out a complimentary change to the web-based version of Google Photos that lets people adjust the quality of stored photos after they've been backed up online. Google Photos is free to download from the Google Play Store. Google offers "unlimited" storage for high-quality photos, or limited storage for full-resolution photos
  • The YouTube Fair Use Protection Program - Google has announced that it will defend you in court against copyright claims against videos it believes are fair use. Holy shit, YouTube doing something to protect their content creators? Someone take their temperature, I think they might have a fever! :-)
  • Price List for Secret Hacker Techniques - An attack that can fully, remotely take over a victim's computer through his or her Safari or Internet Explorer browser, for instance, fetches a price of as much as $50,000. For the harder target of Google Chrome, Zerodium's price rises to $80,000. Remote exploits that entirely defeat the security of an Android or Windows Phone device go for as much as $100,000. And an iOS attack can earn a hacker half a million dollars, by far the highest price on the list.
  • ARRIS Cable Modem - Serial Backdoor - Shodan searches revealed more than 600,000 affected modems in the wild. Vulnerable cable modem models including TG862A, TG862G and DG860A.
  • Ads Using Inaudible Sound To Link Your Phone, TV, Tablet, And PC - Privacy advocates are warning federal authorities of a new threat that uses inaudible, high-frequency sounds to surreptitiously track a person's online behavior across a range of devices, including phones, TVs, tablets, and computers. The ultrasonic pitches are embedded into TV commercials or are played when a user encounters an ad displayed in a computer browser. While the sound can't be heard by the human ear, nearby tablets and smartphones can detect it. When they do, browser cookies can now pair a single user to multiple devices and keep track of what TV commercials the person sees, how long the person watches the ads, and whether the person acts on the ads by doing a Web search or buying a product.
  • Hackers Identifying With Anonymous To Isis: We Will Never Let Up - Last week the war against ISIS was brought back into focus when several terrorists bombed, took hostages and killed numerous civilians in several locations of the French capital, Paris. In a new video announcing the new campaign, an unidentified man donning the iconic mask said "These attacks cannot go unpunished. That's why Anonymous activists from all over the world will hunt you down. Yes, you, the vermin who kill innocent victims - we will hunt you down like we did to those who carried out the attacks on Charlie Hebdo. So get ready for a massive reaction from Anonymous."
  • Verizon Offering 1GB of Free Data for the Holidays - Verizon Wireless customers can snag an extra 1GB of mobile data this month from Big Red. The promotional data offer can be redeemed online and will be added to the account holder's existing data allotment for the current billing period. Verizon said customers can get another free 1GB of data for their next billing period, too. Verizon is offering a range of other freebies to its customers in what it calls its "Thanksgetting" promotion. For example, people who shop online Nov. 25 can get a $5 iTunes gift card or a 30-day trial of Pandora One. Other freebies come from Lyft, Boingo, Gogo, and Amazon.

About halfway through the video, a small eruption from the active region near the center causes the coils to rise up and become brighter as the region re-organizes its magnetic field. This video was taken in extreme ultraviolet wavelengths of 171 angstroms, typically invisible to our eyes but colored here in gold.

IT's a blade made from Cortosis Weave. It was used extensively in The Old Republic games.

Those guys from Anonymous are such clowns.

As for Star Wars, a black Jedi as lead character? That's like putting 50cent as a hacker (can't remember which film was). LMAO

This account did not tweet about possible future ISIS attacks, this is the original post....

wtf

Tom(11:54 PM CET - Nov,22 2015 )
Well if Anonymous can spoil ISIS plans I'm in support.

Mojoman, not sure where you reside but stop being racist. I don't care if the lead Jedi is Asian, as long as they can act the part and be believable that's all that matters.

3 billion USA internet users.. 350 million actual population. 43 million subscribers is not half of anything. So I don't know what that Netflix article is saying. The math is just wrong.

That tree cutting machine is awesome! LMAO!

I do not see how is that racist. Still a human, is it not?
Or are you saying that black people are not of the human race?

It's not wrong, it's just a weak lie.
Welcome to the half-truths of the corporate world.

Tom> That tree cutting machine is awesome! LMAO!
Yep, watch it a few times myself.
To think I am still using an axe to chop up granny's wood...

Black movies are discriminating, too. Though they would look really dumb with white folk acting in them.
I think that's the point he was trying to make. Though I am not sure why: Samuel Jackson is not white either and he did a fabulous job in Star Wars - not as a lead character though.

Tom(07:55 PM CET - Nov,23 2015 )
How are black movies discriminating? WTF. Are you smoking the green stuff?? Most stupid comment I've heard today. Lots of movies with white people replacing different nationalities/colours. The Hunger Games; Katniss, Last Airbender;white instead of asian, Lone Ranger, Johnny Depp, Othello, The Party; Peter Sellers, Star Trek;Benedict Cumberbatch. It's not discrimination, it's more because nobody was interested in the role or there was better. What movie ever follows the book? Yet, all excellent movies. So a black Jedi, who gives a shit? So he's black and he's a good actor. All that matters. To sit there and say a Black Jedi as a lead character? Is clearly discriminating. Or 50cent as a hacker in Escape Plan. Why is there something in the book that states Hush was white? Or laughing that a black guy is a hacker?? Mojoman, is clearly a bigot.

gx-x(01:49 PM CET - Nov,24 2015 )
species > Human
race is something else ;)

Racist =/= realist.

Realist: while white people and Arabs where doing math, mapping skies, building ships, gun powder, weapons, industry etc., Black people where wearing banana leaves and spears. That's why they where easy to enslave in the first place. They are simply inferior.

Racist: I hate niggas taking our jobs, they should be in cotton fields. (I am not racist, this is just an example)

Csimbi(04:47 PM CET - Nov,24 2015 )
You're right, my bad, sorry.
Though according to these definitions you can't really talk about another person without being racist.
If you call someone stupid, an idiot, whatever, you're being racist because it's a characteristic of the person you're referring to...

Tom(06:56 PM CET - Nov,24 2015 )
Ya ok... Now that that is all cleared up.

What the hell are you talking about, restrictions, download limits? I got none of those 100Mb/s down, 15MB/s up uncapped. No problems here. I use both Cdn and US Netflix without issue.

I read some time ago that a lot of internet providers in USA are limiting monthly download limit. And 'Fair Usage Policy' is nothing new in USA and Canada...Now, since I don't live there I can't tell what is true and what is not therefore I can only assume things :/

Yeah, US and CA SPs provide capped internet quite often - Rogers in Toronto for example. Better buy uncapped Teksavvy...

gx-x(07:24 PM CET - Nov,25 2015 )
Oh, I am not affected by any of this. I do not have access to Netflix since I am not from "murica" or CA, and internet is not capped in my country, or any neighboring country that I know of. It's actually confusing me why is this news important. 50% of USA internet users watches NetFlix - what does that imply exactly? That other 50% pirate? I don't even...

It implies nothing.
It's an artificial number for marketing purposes.
