NVIDIA: DirectX 12 Is A Major Stride for Gaming - tech
(hx) 09:23 PM CET - Mar,20 2014 - Post a comment / read (13)
Microsoft today introduced DirectX 12 at the annual Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco. DX12 is Microsoft's latest version of the graphics API that is the dominant standard in the growing, $25 billion PC gaming industry. Developers have been asking for a thinner, more efficient API that allows them to control hardware resources more directly. Despite significant efficiency improvements delivered by continuous advancement of existing API implementations, next-generation applications want to extract all possible performance from multi-core systems. Developers also want to take direct advantage of advanced GPU hardware features, from which developers are currently insulated to provide fool-proof usage. DirectX 12 was designed from scratch to provide the infrastructure for these advanced applications.

Looks like DirectX 12 will mirror many of the improvements AMD implemented in its own Mantle API. The big news today was that DX12 will support more than just the PC and will work on existing hardware. Microsoft will bring DX12 to all of its platforms, including the Xbox One and, if I understand correctly, Windows Phone. Which hardware will be DX12-compatible? AMD said all of its Graphics Core Next-based Radeon GPUs (i.e. Radeon HD 7000 series and newer) will work with the new API. Nvidia pledged support for all Fermi, Kepler, and Maxwell (i.e. GeForce GTX 400 series and newer) parts. The keynote included a demo of Forza 5 running in DirectX 12 mode atop an Nvidia GPU. Finally, Intel said the integrated graphics in its existing Haswell processors will also have DX12 support. All in all, Microsoft estimates that 100% of new desktop GPUs, 80% of new gaming PCs, and 50% of PC gamers will be able to take advantage of the new API.

"Microsoft adopts Mantle but calls it DX12"

lololol

If AMD hadn't spear headed Mantle, microsuck would have been sitting on there asses because this is basically just Mantle. Now lemme guess support for DX12 will just be whichever the next fking OS M$ decided to lock dx12 too.

"NVIDIA will support the DX12 API on all the DX11-class GPUs it has shipped"

yeh, but does Microsuck support it on all Windows based OS it has shipped :P

Csimbi(09:39 PM CET - Mar,20 2014 )
It seems that MS continues the DirectX trend: every even release sucks (and can be safely ignored).
DX13, please.

you got so much hate toward microsoft and i bet you probably use only linux so why you care what microsoft is releasing or not

It remains to be seen how MS deploys DX12. Will everyone HAVE To buy Win 9 to get it? The Nvidia and AMD cold war heats up, will developers have to choose which API or both and increase development costs? Im not seeing this working out well.

Seems to me like it was very clearly stated that this dx is windows independent...

I don't think its clearly stated depending on source Geno but I hope you're right.

I'm GLAD Microsoft is copying Mantle because that means Nvidia card owners like myself get to enjoy something that isn't locked into a just GCN architecture. Good question as to which OS's will support it though. As it stands, only Windows 8.1 supports the latest DirectX (i.e. 11.2 granted no games use it yet). Will that carry over into Directx 12 or will compatibility be extended back to Windows 7 at the very least? Given your reply, you are obviously not very keen on having to install Windows 8.1 (or perhaps 9) just to use it and I can't blame you for that.

What's the problem with OpenGL? Is there anything better in DirectX?

Tom(02:45 PM CET - Mar,21 2014 )
All I see is good publicity for MS and Windows (who has been shat on countless times) and another starting point for nVidia and heck ATI, to make more money selling video cards continually inflated rates. I'm not going to judge MS next OS yet because I haven't seen much about it but if it's anything like Win8... yikes. And lower the F'ing price already. If SteamOS works out, so far looking pretty damn good, I will probably dump Windows all together. Come to think of it, I'll bet the DX12 is more a strategic hindrance for developers to make their games work on Linux.

Tom(03:06 PM CET - Mar,21 2014 )
Mojoman> What's the problem with OpenGL? Is there anything better in DirectX?

OpenGL is good but DirectX is better (my opinion). While OpenGL works good on multi-platforms, the API's and stuff that DirectX has are superior and as far as I know are easier to work with than OpenGL. but this isn't really true either. If you have guys who know OpenGL, it may be the other way around. Really more depends on the game you are making and what API's you will use. It's a controversial subject. Some like OpenGL and other DirectX. There is so many factors involved when deciding on OpenGL and DirectX. I'm sure MS is pretty aggressive with game dev's with DirectX. MS is faster to incoporate the features that nVidia and ATI want. Pretty sure that's still the same case today. Carmack was always swearing OpenGL was better but even he has had a change of critique over the years.

I think it depends on the game you are making, the features your game will support and the platforms the game will run on and your dev team that will decide the direction.

Csimbi(08:09 PM CET - Mar,21 2014 )
quote:

Depends on which hat you have on.

I'd think the other way around. Ask any programmer. Real programmer, that is. The OpenGL API is far better in every sense than DirectX and it's a much better performer, too.
If you have an old Riva card, try Serious Sam (the first 3d shooter in the series) with DirectX and OpenGL - you'll see that OpenGL is not only faster, but looks better, too. That game was optimized for both as DirectX and OpenGL were on the same level at the time, so you can compare these two more or less without bias.

If you have your gamer hat on and you're playing current games, you'll agree with Tom: undoubtedly, current games do look better on DirectX.

The thing is, DirectX development is far better funded, hence its advantage about being better-looking and seemingly more advanced at the moment; OpenGL is far behind in every sense. We are talking literally, years of time "lost". Imagine if OpenGL could be brought up to speed...

Now that MS is killing the Windows platform, the funding (and with it, the interest) will shift towards other platforms and more investments will be made into the OpenGL specs and catch up, making it far better than DirectX ever was.
Unless of course MS recognizes that they are making a huge mistake and invest into making a competitive OS again. Personally, I would not mind seeing MS crash under its own stupidity finally...

Koogle(08:57 PM CET - Mar,21 2014 )
Opengl for game development and cross platform compatibility is the way to go, Microsoft vendor lockin with Directx is pointless these days with mobile as a new market, this company has so much money and fucks up just about everything they touch. Windows mobile.. idiots, zune, idiots, surface, idiots, windblows metro shite, IDDDIIIOTS

Is still plenty to like about having a windows OS, but they are seriously fucking up windows as a platform over linux or osx, they are turning it into a pile of spyware crap for shitty square loving dummies who like dumbed down interfaces with features and options removed. Just getting worse as they make it easier for OSx and Linux to actually compete on the front of crap UX experiences.

Maybe MS should start working on a linux distro

Csimbi(12:41 PM CET - Mar,22 2014 )
Koogle> Maybe MS should start working on a linux distro
Erm, ok, but do it far, far away from anything that would have an effect on any known Linux out there...
Windux, lol
