- Ubisoft announces ANNO 1404 - Ubisof sent out
a press release announcing ANNO 1404,
the publisher's first ANNO offering after acquiring the popular PC
"building-strategy" property and its German publisher in 2007. In ANNO 1404
- scheduled for release worldwide in March 2009 anno domini - "players will
get to know the culture and technology of the ancient Orient while learning
the tricks of local trade, diplomacy and economy in order to build their own
metropolis." In related news, a

- Gothic 4 - GC Previews -
PC Games and
GameStar had a look Spellbound's Gothic 4: Arcania aka Arcania: A Gothic
Tale. These german preview reveals that the new graphics engine looks great
and is lightning-fast, detailed weather simulation, for example: rain -> wet
or dry areas -> puddles -> sun dries them up slowly, "light exposure
control" (basically HDR), much more graphical details on characters.
Example: Lester -> tattoos, skin details, skin folds, ranged combat (bow):
Zoom over the shoulder, up & down movement (-> breathing), different target
zones, aiming costs stamina, experience with a weapon category increases its
precision and hit percentage; only as a small modifier on top of standard
Gothic character development though.
- Hollenshead & Carmack Interviee - Part One -
The main topics are engine licensing, digital distribution, and piracy:
Todd Hollenshead: There's lots of things that they could do but typically
just they just line up on the wrong side of the argument in my opinion. They
have lots of reasons as to why they do that, but I think that there's
been this dirty little secret among hardware manufacturers, which is that
the perception of free content - even if you're supposed to pay for it
on PCs - is some sort hidden benefit that you get when you buy a PC, like a
right to download music for free or a right to download pirated movies and
games.
