  • Best Professional Monitors - Professional monitors always come at a premium price but for that extra coin you get multiple color gamut options, factory-certified calibration and often times the ability to create your own color presets with included software and instruments. When you need the absolute pinnacle of color accuracy, one of the screens can fulfill that need, usually without any initial adjustment.
  • Windows 10 S becoming a mode, not a version, as Microsoft shakes up its pricing - With the next big update to Windows 10, version 1803, Microsoft is making some big changes to how it sells the software to OEMs. The biggest casualty? Windows 10 S-the restricted version of Windows that can only run apps from the Store-is going away. Currently, Windows 10 S is a unique edition of Windows 10. It's based on Windows 10 Pro; Windows 10 Pro has various facilities that enable system administrators to restrict which software can be run, and Windows 10 S is essentially a preconfigured version of those facilities. In addition to locking out arbitrary downloaded programs, it also prevents the use of certain built-in Windows features such as the command-line, PowerShell, and Windows Subsystem for Linux.
  • No Office 2019 Without Windows 10 - A post on the Windows blog outlines changes to servicing and support of Windows and Office. The post states that Office 2019 will only be available to Windows 10, or the next long-term servicing version of Windows Server. Support will be shorter than normal well, Instead of the normal 5 years standard support, and 5 year extended, they are shortening extended support to 2 years
  • Learn More about how Spectre and Meltdown Work - Let Jon Masters, Computer Architect at Red Hat, help you understand just exactly how Spectre and Meltdown work. While he had to plow through his 90 slide presentation on stage in 45 minutes, he has been nice enough to give us direct access online. However you can click through those as slow as fast as you wish. The PDF entitled, Exploiting modern microarchitectures: Meltdown, Spectre, and other attacks, is available here.
  • A critical Adobe Flash Player zero-day vulnerability - Adobe's Flash Player has been the cause of security concerns over the past few years with lots of attackers targeting the particular software. A few months ago, Kaspersky Lab discovered a Flash vulnerability through Microsoft Word, and in February 2017, even Microsoft was forced to release a critical security update for Flash on Windows, separate from its Patch Tuesday schedule. Now, another zero-day vulnerability has been discovered in the software, which allows Remote Code Execution (RCE) on various platforms. According to Adobe, it is already being utilized against Windows users on a limited scale. The latest security issue has been discovered by South Korea's CERT and has been reported in detail by Cisco Systems' Talos group. According to the security researchers, the exploit is carried out by embedding a Flash SWF file in a Microsoft Excel document. In the limited number of attacks carried out using this vulnerability so far, opening this document allows the Flash object to download the ROKRAT payload from malicious websites, load it into the memory and execute it
  • Facebook bans ads for cryptocurrencies, ICOs and binary options - Facebook has just made it a bit harder for scammers to solicit your hard-earned dollars for cryptocurrency purchases. Of course, the social media company's new policy also may hit some legitimate crypto ads as well. The policy, made public by Facebook Product Management Director Rob Leathern, "prohibits ads that promote financial products and services that are frequently associated with misleading or deceptive promotional practices, such as binary options, initial coin offerings and cryptocurrency." The move is to protect users from ads that are trying to capitalize on the popularity of these new financial opportunities through bad faith.
  • Bitcoin Free Fall Continues As Dominant Cryptocurrency Drops Below $7,000 - It looks as though it isn't just the Dow Jones that is having a crappy day in the financial world. Bitcoin, which was trading at close to $20,000 in late 2017, has come crashing down to earth in the past few weeks. Just last week, there panic coursed through the market which caused the cryptocurrency to drop below $10,000. Today, Bitcoin dropped under $7,000. According to Coindesk, Bitcoin is currently at $6,784, which represents a 17 percent drop for the day. Bitcoin hasn't seen these lows since it began a meteoric rise back in mid-November 2017. For those keeping score, Bitcoin has lost roughly half of its value since the start of 2018... ouch.
  • eBay is dropping PayPal as its main payment provider - eBay has announced it is moving away from the payment service. eBay said it had signed an agreement that will see Adyen become its primary payments processing partner. The Amsterdam-based company, which offers back-end payment services to businesses, counts Netflix, Spotify, and Uber among its customers. Adyen will offer an integrated payments solution within eBay itself, meaning you won't have to log into a separate website for transactions. This should make paying on eBay a smoother experience and bring it in line with other retailers such as Amazon. The good news for most users is that the move will result in reduced payment processing charges, which can eat into sellers' profits. Despite charging less, eBay is expected to add $2 billion of revenue to its business once it starts taking the processing fees, according to Recode.
  • Google Turning On Pixel Visual Core in All Pixel 2 Handsets - Google today made the February security patch available to its Nexus and Pixel devices. First and foremost, the patch closes a number of security holes in the code that left all the handsets vulnerable to certain types of attacks. Google plugged up issues in the kernel, framework, system, and in select Qualcomm components. The update also provides a number of feature updates specifically for Pixel 2 devices. For example, it boosts Bluetooth call quality, WiFi uplink performance, and battery performance. It also improves the camera, Android Auto, app compatibility, mobile data, and audio switching, and provides stability fixes. Last, as already mentioned, the February patch turns on the Pixel Visual Core in the Pixel 2 and 2 XL for better photography

  • Google Closes Acquisition of HTC Hardware Team - Google today said it has completed its proposed acquisition of select assets from HTC. The deal includes portions of HTC's handset design team, among other properties. Google worked with HTC to develop the Pixel 2 smartphone, which was released last year. "As our hardware business enters its third year, we remain committed to building and investing for the long run," said Rick Osterloh, Google's senior vice president of hardware. "Today, we start digging in with our new teammates, guided by the mission to create radically helpful experiences for people around the world, by combining the best of Google's AI, software and hardware." HTC's hardware team will remain in Taiwan, as Osterloh said the acquisition marks Google's official expansion into Taipei, now the largest Google engineering site in the Asia-Pacific region.

As expected, the Oreo update contains notification dots, picture-in-picture, and autofill tools in Chrome. This update for the 5T also packs security patches, general bug fixes, and a new design for the Quick Settings screen. OnePlus says OxygenOS 5.0.2 also updates the file manager, weather, and gallery apps, and boosts the launcher to version 2.2. According to OnePlus, some users will see the update as soon as today though the bulk of users will see it over the next few days. The 5T is OnePlus' flagship handset.
