TechNews - Google Accused Of Faking Duplex AI - tech
(hx) 06:27 PM EDT - May,20 2018 - Post a comment
  • Digital Foundry: PC has an HDR support problem - and Nvidia wants to fix it - Are extreme spec 4K displays the answer? The Digital Foundry at Eurogamer has the story.
  • NVIDIA's first 4K G-Sync HDR Monitor Is Available to Preorder for - Acer's Predator X27 has finally gone up for preorder at Newegg. The display will be one of the first to grant gamers the privilege of 4K at 144Hz, with 1,000 nits of peak brightness and NVIDIA's G-Sync technology
  • IBM Warns of Instant Breaking of Encryption by Quantum Computers - The head of IBM Research thinks that security-minded individuals should start looking into alternate forms of encryption and move their data today, as quantum computing is on the horizon. Some believe that quantum computers, capable of instantly breaking today's strongest security, could debut in as little as five years. Quantum computers can solve some types of problems near-instantaneously compared with billions of years of processing using conventional computers. Moler said people might feel safe because they have done everything they are supposed to do to secure their existing data -- but quantum computing will break it. "I do think that's scary," she said.
  • Google Accused Of Faking Duplex AI Speech Demo - It's safe to say that the most impressive thing shown off at Google I/O this year was the awesome demo of Google Duplex and the Google Assistant interacting with humans to book hair appointments and dinner reservations. Despite the potential of such a mind-blowing demo, some complained that the AI hadn't identified itself and that it was unethical to have humans in the dark about the computer on the other end of the phone. It's safe to say that the most impressive thing shown off at Google I/O this year was the awesome demo of Google Duplex and the Google Assistant interacting with humans to book hair appointments and dinner reservations. Despite the potential of such a mind-blowing demo, some complained that the AI hadn't identified itself and that it was unethical to have humans in the dark about the computer on the other end of the phone. What some are finding incredibly suspicious about the interactions is that the people who answer the calls never identify the business that is being called. Typically when you call a business the person answering the phone will say the business name and their own name; nothing of that sort was said by the people answering these calls. When the hair salon demo call was answered, the woman simply says "Hello, how can I help you?" and when the restaurant call is answered the woman says "Hi, may I help you?" Another thing that detractors are citing is that the calls have no ambient noise in the recordings as you would typically expect in a busy hair salon or restaurant. In addition, neither business in the demos asked for the customer's phone number or contact information. Google has declined to comment
  • Google Home Now Lets You Control Play Movies Via Voice -As promised, Google has added voice control support to its own video service, Google Play Movies & TV, to Google Home. People who own Google Home products can now speak voice commands to access movies and television shows purchased or rented through the Google Play Store and have that content play on Chromecast-connected television sets. Google says people won't have to change any settings or reconfigure their device to access this feature, as it has been added automatically on the backend. Google Home has for some time allowed people to use voice commands to access Netflix and other third-party streaming video content. The tool lets people start movies and shows, fast-forward, rewind, pause, and more.
  • Google Wifi Lets You Check Network Connections for Each Device - Google is rolling out a new tool to its wifi product that will let people gain more insight with respect to the performance of their home network. The Google Wifi Network Check function lets people measure how each individual device is performing on their wifi network. "Knowing wifi coverage is poor in an area of your home can help you pinpoint the exact bottleneck when you notice a connectivity slowdown. Then, you'll know to move your Google Wifi point closer to that device or even move the device itself for a stronger connection," explained Google. Google says most users of Google Wifi have an average of 18 devices connected. The new tool means people can explore how each is connecting to the network and then make adjustments to improve performance as needed. The new feature in Network Check will be available in the Google Wifi app in the next few weeks.
  • Qualcomm to Add WPA3 to Mobile Devices This Summer - Qualcomm this week laid out its plan to adopt the latest wifi security protocol in future products. The company said it will apply the Wifi Alliance's Wifi Protected Access (WPA3) across its portfolio of mobile and networking products starting this summer. The core feature of WPA3 is stronger protection when users choose weak passwords. WPA3 also simplifies the process of securing access points that don't have a display or interface. The standard provides individualized data encryption to protect data as it moves from computers, tablets, and phones to access points. Further, it includes a 192-bit security suite to help businesses and governments adopt the highest levels of protection. Qualcomm says it has already added WPA3 to its WCN3998 wifi radio and IPQ807x AP platform. The company says phons based on the Snapdragon 845 mobile application processor will be the first to support WPA3. The chip and phones that rely on it will gain WPA3 this summer, with Qualcomm's portfolio of networking devices to follow soon thereafter.
  • ASUS ZenFone Max Pro M1 Revealed - If you're in the market for a new smartphone you might want to hold out a bit and take in the specs of the new ASUS ZenFone Max Pro M1. This bad boy has 6" of screen real estate running with a resolution of 1800X2160. It's using the new Snapdragon 636 and comes with a massive 5,000 mAh battery. Also, it has a dual-lens camera system for those of you that take a lot of pictures.
  • OnePlus 6 Moves Up the Ladder with All-Glass Design and Top Specs - The OnePlus 6 drops the metal chassis of previous phones and adopts a metal-and-glass design common to today's top devices. The 6 will be offered in white with pearl powder, matte black, and glossy black, all with unique finishes on the curved Gorilla Glass 5 surfaces. OnePlus says the phone can withstand splashes and similar exposure to water, but the phone stops short of being waterproof. The OnePlus 6 adopts a notched screen design. The AMOLED display measures 6.28 inches across the diagonal with 2,280 by 1,080 pixels at a 19:9 aspect ratio
  • Mozilla to Display Ads in Firefox - In a move laced with irony, Mozilla would soon be putting paid advertisements into its popular browser Firefox. These advertisements would come in the form of sponsored links shown when one opens a new browser tab.
  • Senate Vote Passes to Save Net Neutrality - Democrats in the Senate forced a vote on net neutrality today and walked away victorious. Members of the Senate voted 52-47 to retain the net neutrality regulations put in place by the Obama administration that were later nixed by the FCC. The margin of victory was large than expected, with three Republicans, two independents, and 47 Democrats all voting in favor of keeping the rules. Though the bill has passed the Senate, it still has to get through the Republican-controlled House of Representatives and, if it succeeds there, President Trump. Obama's FCC established firm rules governing broadband service as a utility under Title II. As such, paid prioritization, fast lanes, blocking, and throttling were strictly prohibited. The Republican-led FCC has largely scaled back those rules, preferring to let the industry govern itself with "light regulation" from the FTC rather than the FCC. For the moment, the FCC's repeal of net neutrality will go into effect on June 11.
  • Porsche says - Tesla Who? - History is written by those who start in pole position. Strictly speaking, Porsche E-Performance was set in motion 120 years ago when Ferdinand Porsche took a leading role in the design of the Egger-Lohner C.2 Phaeton electric car and development of the Semper Vivus. Around one hundred years later, Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG reprised this visionary concept for use in production-based GT racing. See all the milestones of our hybrid and electric engine history and take a look what the future will bring in this video.

While Treyarch is getting flak for developing Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 as a multiplayer-only title, statistics show that the decision could be justifiable. According to numbers gathered by TrueAchievements, few players are invested in the series’ single-player story modes.
The participation for the original Black Ops averaged 25.44% with the second game peaking at 27.13%. The third game averaged a paltry 4.14%, though to be fair this game's achievements are a bit different and require you play on higher than regular difficulty to unlock most of them. Still, the story completion achievement, which pops regardless of difficulty, sits at under 9%.

Blizzard Celebrates Overwatch's Second Anniversary - briefly
(hx) 04:01 AM EDT - May,20 2018 - Post a comment
Blizzard Entertainment’s Overwatch is quickly approaching its second anniversary, which will happen on May 24th, and today the developer released a celebratory video. The video is made with some very advanced and fluid stop-motion techniques, featuring Tracer and Reaper as they engage in some rather adorable interaction. Could Tracer manage to break the masked assassin’s shell just a little bit? Well, you’ll have to watch the video to know. A second video was also released, and it’s basically a "behind the scenes" clip showcasing the process from concept to creation, and the people behind the short. It’s interesting to see the enormous amount of effort that went into shooting each frame.

Valve's Steam Link App Beta - briefly
(hx) 03:40 AM EDT - May,19 2018 - Post a comment / read (1)
Earlier this month Valve announced that it would be releasing a new app called Steam Link allowing you to play PC games on your mobile device. Steam Link was promised to land by the end of May and now the Steam Link beta is available via Google Play. The app does exactly what was promised; it allows you to stream PC games via Steam if the smartphone is connected to a PC close by over a 5GHz WiFi network. The PC also must be connected directly to your router via an Ethernet cable. Steam Link won’t function over an LTE connection, which means no streamed PC games from across town. Controlling the games on your mobile device can be accomplished with the Steam Controller or to other Bluetooth controllers such as the Xbox One controller. However, the full list of supported controllers hasn't been released at this time. Valve Link will work with Android TV devices assuming they are attached to the same router as the PC used for game streaming. App Link will support games at 4K and 60 FPS, but the standard quality for most games streamed with the app will be 1080p quality. The original announcement also talked about an iOS version, but there is no indication of when that app might hit the App Store.

  • HuniePop and Other Adult Games Facing Removal From Steam Store - It seems that Valve is on a crusade to remove games from Steam that are claimed to include pornographic content. Not that this is a bad thing because it is their house, so their rules, but some developers are crying foul because they don't believe their content is pornographic. However, some of these same developers are removing the "bad" content so they can continue to be sold on Steam. I don't play any of these games so I can't opine on whether the potential bans are valid or not.
  • Worlds Adrift Looks to be the Next Big MMO - Worlds Adrift looks to be a Massively Multiplayer Online game in the same vein as Minecraft, but moving a bit past simple building blocks and creepers, and it relies on a lot of the ingame environment being created by the players themselves. Reuters has a story covering this and the huge investments being made into it. $24 or $36 is not a bad price if it makes good on its promises, and no in-game transactions as well. That is at least refreshing. It went on sale yesterday. They are citing GTX 960/ R9 280 GPUs as the recommended video cards, so they should have plenty of footprint to sell into.
  • GeForce Now for the NVIDIA SHIELD is Now Free - Starting today, GeForce Now is a free service. Nvidia has sent out emails to customers saying, "Over the next few months, we’ll be upgrading your GeForce NOW service. You’ll continue to have access to your favorite membership titles and games you’ve purchased through the GeForce NOW store. To reward our loyal GeForce NOW gamers, we’ll stop billing your account as of May 15th, 2018 to make the transition as smooth as possible."

Such upgrades are a customizable in-game HUD, voice chat, performance, and stats. However buried in the middle of the post, they announce that Fortnite is coming to Android, with a summer release. Always interesting how developers wait to release stuff on the platform with nearly 90 percent of the market share.

NVIDIA GTX1180 reportedly coming out in July - tech
(hx) 11:17 AM EDT - May,17 2018 - Post a comment / read (3)
Another day, another GTX 1180 report. This time it’s related to the next generation card’s release date. According to Tom’s Hardware, Nvidia is set to launch the Founders Edition of the upcoming GPU in July, which matches previous rumors. That means we don't have long to wait before getting our hands on it. The news comes from industry sources who spoke with Tom's Hardware Germany's Igor Wallossek on condition of anonymity. In addition to the FE cards’ arrival in a couple of months, they revealed that third-party cards would follow in August or September. There had also been confusion over whether the new cards would use Volta, Ampere, or Turing architecture, but it seems the chips will be based on the Turing platform. There are still no official details, but rumors say the 1180 will use TSMC’s 12nm FinFET process and have 3584 CUDA cores, 224 texture mapping units, and 64 ROPs. It’s also said to sport "8-16GB" of DDR6 memory and features a TDP of 170 to 200 watts. The GTX 1170, meanwhile, is rumored to come with 2,688 CUDA cores, run at 1.5GHz to 1.8GHz, and also have 8 to 16GB of GDDR6 memory.

Next Battlefield game will be revealed on May 23rd - briefly
(hx) 04:29 PM EDT - May,16 2018 - Post a comment
The next Battlefield game, Battlefield V, will be revealed on May 23, according to a teaser website set up by EA. The site’s URL contains the phrase “Never Be the Same,” and a portal to the upcoming livestream event is available, as well. While not on the teaser site, the preview for the site (seen when posting a link to social media or in a messaging app) contained a watercolor of a white horse. While not a very informative clue, it is a lovely picture.

For more than a year, Battlefield 1 players wondered how to get through a locked door in the basement of Fort Vaux, a multiplayer map from the They Shall Not Pass DLC. This month, some savvy players finally opened the door by breaking signs and flipping switches in an order that spelled out “isolement,” the French word for “isolation.” Inside, they were greeted by the horse picture. Determined to find more in a room that seemingly held no tangible clues, they listened in on a dripping pipe overhead. As it turned out, the drips were Morse code. The message read, “ea.com/neverbethesame” - the teaser site.
RIDE 3 Announced - briefly
(hx) 11:06 AM EDT - May,16 2018 - Post a comment
Milestone has announced Ride 3, ahead of the upcoming game's official release on 8th November 2018. The latest entry in Milestone's Ride bike racing game franchise, Ride 3 is also the first title in the series to utilise the Unreal 4 engine - following in the wake of other Milestone-developed games, such as Gravel, MXGP 3 and the upcoming MotoGP 18. As well as boasting improved visual fidelity and accuracy, Ride 3 is also claimed to offer a more authentic bike riding experience. Milestone states that, on top of physics changes, Ride 3 features a "revised collision system" and "improved AI" over Ride 2. Ride 3 will also boast noticeably more content over its predecessors. Milestone claims over 230 bikes will be included in the base game, with players having the option to customise them with a livery editor and over 500 different motorcycle parts. Furthermore, Ride 3 will contain 30 different locations, spread out across road courses, drag strips, city circuits and drone-scanned real-world race tracks. For the first time ever in a Ride game, night racing will also be present in Ride 3 - with the weather system from prior Ride games also presumably set to return in Ride 3. No details on Ride 3's multiplayer offerings were disclosed by Milestone, though it was confirmed that Ride 3 will contain an extensive career mode. Utilising a volume-based setup, Ride 3's various campaign mode chapters will focus on specific themes - with Milestone citing manufacturers, bike classes and noteworthy tracks as examples of what some of these volumes will focus on. Ride 3 will officially launch on 8th November 2018 across the PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One platforms
