What the hell is a teraflop anyway? - tech
(hx) 09:14 AM CEST - Jun,27 2016 - Post a comment / read (2)
What the hell is a teraflop anyway? And to what extent does it define gaming power? The Digital Foundry at Eurogamer explains all.
Teraflops are a very basic measure of computational power, separate and distinct from all other aspects of GPU design. For example, AMD's GCN (graphics core next) architecture has always been heavy on raw computational power compared to its Nvidia rivals - one reason why Radeon GPUs did so well back in the cryptocurrency gold rush era. However, it is important to stress that this does not necessarily translate into games performance.

A good example of this is to compare Nvidia's GTX 1080 with its 9TF vs AMD's Radeon R9 Fury X with 8.6TF. Based on computational power alone, you'd expect these two graphics cards to offer broadly equivalent performance, but as the 4K benchmarks below demonstrate, the GTX 1080 isn't just a bit faster, it's a lot faster in all but one title we tested. Indeed, even the slower GTX 1070 - with a rated 6.5TF of power - can comfortably outperform Fury X in many games. Further, in terms of teraflops, the GTX 1070 even lags behind Nvidia's own Titan X (7TF) and again, it manages to match or even outperform it.

Drivers - the software powering the hardware - are important, but more crucially, so is the design of the graphics architecture itself, not to mention other aspects of the hardware, such as memory bandwidth and on-chip memory caches. However, comparisons between console parts can be broadly indicative for two reasons: firstly, because the surrounding elements of the GPU tend to scale as required in line with compute performance and secondly, because both PS4 and Xbox One GPUs come from the same family and share very similar core designs.

  • The Intel SSD 540s (480GB) Review - Against the wider field of competitors, the Intel 540s is clearly an entry-level SSD, intended for light workloads. It cannot keep pace with SanDisk's X400 or even the current generation of Phison S10-based drives like the Toshiba OCZ TR150 (formerly Trion 150). The ADATA SP550 has held on to a place in the market by usually being one of the cheapest drives available, but at the moment it is mostly tied with the TR150 on price, making the latter a better purchase given its better performance. The current pricing of the Intel SSD 540s makes my recommendation quite simple: don't buy.
  • Western Digital My Passport Wireless Pro Wi-Fi Hard Drive Review - Iit is clear that Western Digital continues to differentiate itself in the crowded wireless storage market. The addition of 802.11ac support, and the continued targeting of content creators as well as consumers (with features such as Plex and support for external storage devices formatted in exFAT) are welcome aspects. The experience with the My Passport Wireless Pro was positive overall. The only quibble we have is that the WLAN radios are both 1x1 configurations. Having 2x2 radios could provide better performance. It is not outside the scope for such products, since the first generation unit did come with a 2x2 802.11n WLAN adapter.
  • Microsoft Says Edge Beats All Browsers In Battery Life - What happens when three identical devices run on different browsers? The Microsoft Edge team wanted to find out. This experiment showed that battery life on a PC running Microsoft Edge lasts 70% longer than Chrome, 43% longer than Firefox Firefox, and 17% longer than Opera (with Battery Saver enabled).

  • Google Search to Improve Symptom Search Results - Google plans to change the results shown when people search for symptom-based information. Moving forward Google will show a list of related conditions to symptoms like stuffy nose, cough, or headache. The results will provide a description of the symptom itself, list possible self-treatment options, and alert when symptoms warrant a doctor visit. "Our goal is to help you to navigate and explore health conditions related to your symptoms, and quickly get to the point where you can do more in-depth research on the web or talk to a health professional," explained Google in a blog post. Google created a list of symptoms based on medical conditions that are often included in search results. The list was checked by medical professionals at the Harvard Medical School and Mayo Clinic in order to associate individual symptoms with potential ailments. Google warns that its search results are for informational purposes only and should not replace in-person consultations with physicians or other healthcare providers. The changed symptom-based search results will appear on mobile devices in the coming days.
  • Galaxy Note 7 Confirmed With Iris Scanner - Multiple reports stated that Samsung might skip a numeral to release the Galaxy Note 7 later this year, and it also being reported that there will be no flat screen variant of the device. Now, a new image has surfaced that pretty much confirms the name of the next flagship smartphone from Samsung. A new tweet from serial leaker Evan Blass (@evleaks) consists of what could be an official logo of the Galaxy Note 7. It is possible that the South Korean smartphone giant might release only the curved screen variant of the Galaxy Note 7. It is expected to feature a 5.8-inch curved QHD Super AMOLED display, a 12-megapixel primary camera with new features, a 5-megapixel secondary camera, 6GB RAM, a microSD card slot, and a 4000 mAh battery.
  • iPhone 7 May Keep Headphone Jack And Support Dual Sims - Rock Fix, a smartphone repair shop based in China's Ganzhou, has recently been posting photos of alleged iPhone 7 components. One of these is apparently the 4.7-inch model's Lightning cable assembly which, contrary to what we've been hearing before, still has a headphone jack attached to it. And more recently, the shop shared photos of what it claims to be the next iPhone's dual-SIM trays, which will be a first for Apple if true.

T-Mobile may terminate or restrict service for misuse or excessive roaming. The free WiFi offer is available from Friday, June 24 through Sunday, June 26 on all domestic flights that offer Gogo WiFi. Last, T-Mobile added Belize to its list of Simple Global countries, which means T-Mobile customers can use 2G data and send messages for free, and make low-cost calls when traveling to Belize. Free roaming in Belize begins July 1.

  • Leaked Galaxy Note 6 (Note 7?) - curved edges,USB Type-C, iris - uSwitch has managed to get its hands on what it claims are leaked blueprints of Samsung's next flagship handset. What it reveals is a device that'll look almost identical to the Galaxy S7 Edge, complete with curved edges. The key difference, of course, is the slot for the stylus.  The blueprints also reveal that Samsung is ditching the standard USB port in favor of a USB Type-C port, a welcomed move on a high-end device as it enables faster transfers and charging. A series of sensors above the display suggest the phone may feature a biometric iris scanner that would let users unlock their handset simply by looking at it.  In related news, serial leaker Evan Blass of @evleaks says Samsung is on track to unveil the next Note smartphone almost two months from now, or in early August. If true, that would be even earlier than the Note 5's debut on August 13 of last year and give Samsung more time on the market ahead of Apple's next iPhone.

Samsung says the device must be purchased on an installment plan, purchased with a contract, leased, or bought outright to qualify for the offer. Samsung says it has 600,000 Gear VR headsets to give away. If more than 600,000 people submit claim forms, Samsung may choose to reward people with a $100 gift card to Samsung.com.

Today's decision stems from an appeal based on a Baltimore case involving armed robberies from 2011. Citing a decades-old idea suggesting consumers routinely allow their phone service provider to know their location, the Fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Virginia, reversed a divided opinion from last year. The majority (12-3) opinion held that "Anyone who has stepped outside to 'get a signal,' or has warned a caller of a potential loss of service before entering an elevator, understands, on some level, that location matters." A ruling last year from the Sixth U.S. Circuit Court agreed that no warrant is needed. The Supreme Court has refused to review similar cases. A lawyer for the ACLU argued that the matter has not been finalized by the courts.

AMD Radeon RX480 officially announced - tech
(hx) 12:47 AM CEST - Jun,02 2016 - Post a comment / read (1)
The next-generation graphics card war is officially on—though it's already shaping up very differently than previous versions. While Nvidia kicked things off with the overwhelming firepower of the enthusiast-only $600 GeForce GTX 1080 and $380 GTX 1070, AMD's attacking the mainstream instead.

In a livestream from Computex in Taipei, AMD announced that the Radeon RX 480 will be the first graphics card based on its forthcoming Polaris graphics processors. And get this: The Radeon RX 480 stands ready to deliver performance equivalent to what today's $500 graphics cards offer. That's roughly in line with the Radeon R9 390X, GeForce GTX 980, or air-cooled Radeon Fury.

The Radeon RX 480 will cost only $200 when it goes on sale on June 29.

  • The Intel Skull Canyon NUC6i7KYK mini-PC Review - One of the more impressive aspects of the Skull Canyon NUC6i7KYK is the reappearance of Thunderbolt in a mini-PC.  Connecting the Thunderbolt ports on the two machines and allowing the PCs to talk to each other automatically creates a 10Gbps network adapter. For a setup with just two machines, it is enough to just set static IPs on the interfaces of both machines in the same subnet, and setting the network location to private so that the machines can talk to each other.
  • MSI GT80S Titan SLI Gaming Laptop First Look -  The MSI GT80S Titan SLI features an Intel Core i7-6920HQ, with four locked cores at a frequency of 2.9 GHz and a 3.8 GHz turbo clock. Although the Core i7-6920HQ is a heck of a mobile processor, some may question the choice of a locked CPU in a premium powerhouse PC. However, it all boils down to power, and the 330-watt power adapter is already exceeding its limits with the inclusion of two GTX 980 graphics modules, which eat up to 150 watts each. If the GPUs are on full blast (which is unlikely in real-world applications), this leaves roughly 30 watts to run the rest of the system, so it’s no surprise MSI paired the powerful desktop-grade GPU configuration with a locked mobile processor.
  • ZOTAC announces three new GeForce GTX 1080 graphics cards - The first cards in the lineup include the ZOTAC GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition, ZOTAC GeForce GTX 1080 AMP and the ZOTAC GeForce GTX 1080 AMP Extreme. The GeForce GTX 1080 AMP and GeForce GTX 1080 AMP Extreme cards come with SPECTRA, a lighting system that lets you customize colors and mood lighting using the redesigned ZOTAC FireStorm utility. As far as cooling goes, the GeForce GTX 1080 AMP Edition features re-engineered dual fan IceStorm with tougher ExoArmor. The GeForce GTX 1080 AMP Extreme on the other hand is equipped with a triple fan IceStorm thermal system with EXO Fan performance claimed to deliver up to 30% higher airflow compared to traditional fans. Also MSI has unleashed its lineup of GeForce GTX 1080 graphics cards, with a total of six new cards. The cards announced by MSI include the GTX 1080 GAMING X 8G, GTX 1080 SEA HAWK, GTX 1080 ARMOR 8G OC, GTX 1080 ARMOR 8G, GTX 1080 AERO 8G OC, and the GTX 1080 AERO 8G. The GeForce GTX 1080 SEA HAWK is a result of a partnership between MSI and Corsair. The card integrates Corsair’s popular Hydro Series liquid cooler, allowing it to deliver extreme gaming performance thanks to increased clock speeds out of the box. MSI GeForce GTX 1080 ARMOR 8G OC comes in a Black & White design that has been inspired by advanced armor shielding. It includes the ARMOR 2X Thermal Design that uses patented TORX Fan technology and Advanced Airflow Control for improved cooling performance.
  • Microsoft accused of deceiving people into upgrading to Windows 10 with updated pop-up - Microsoft is in trouble yet again for its heavy-handed approach when 'encouraging' people to move to Windows 10. The GWX prompt was changed last week, introducing a small and quite easily-missed link that allows users to reschedule or cancel the upgrade. But when presented with this Window, many people missed the link and simply clicked on the corner X as usual, assuming they were canceling the installation; instead, they were consenting for the update to take place at the scheduled time.
  • Overwatch Benchmarked: Graphics & CPU Performance Tested - Making the game even more affordable are the surprisingly relaxed PC hardware requirements. • Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Injustice Edition - Introducing the new Galaxy S7 edge Injustice Edition inspired by DC Super Hero Batman.
  • Samsung's Galaxy Note 6 might instead be called the Galaxy Note 7 - If you are waiting for Samsung to finally announce the Galaxy Note 6, you may well be surprised to find out that there might be no device under such a name in the near future. According to a source from Korea, Samsung has decided to skip the Galaxy Note 6, and instead name its upcoming Note handset as the 'Galaxy Note 7'. As for the reason for this unusual change, this was reportedly to eliminate inconsistencies when it comes to branding Samsung's products. Samsung has announced and launched the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge early this year, and such a move supposedly will help bring more parity with the company's handsets. 'When Galaxy Note 6 that has its model number lower than Galaxy S7, which is the newest model, is released, it can give out a feeling that it is an outdated phone,' according to a high-ranking official of a telecommunications company. Moreover, according to the source, Samsung is already referring to the next Note device as the Galaxy Note 7. Rumors are further stating that Samsung is also planning on using dual-edged screens for the Note series for the first time. However, it is still not known if this change will produce two variants, a Note 7, and a Note 7 edge, similar to the S flagships. As for the possible time of release, the new Note handset is seen to be launched around mid-August, which is at par with the Galaxy Note 5's announcement which was last August 13, 2015, and was made available to the public after just a week.

  • Foxconn Replaces 60,000 Factory Workers With Robots - A government official in China just announced that Foxconn has replaced 60,000 factory workers with robots. How long before other companies do the same? Robots are cheaper, work 24 hours a day, seven days a week with no overtime, can't call in sick....kinda like human employees in China, just less robotic. Former McDonald's chief executive Ed Rensi recently told the US's Fox Business programme a minimum-wage increase to $15 an hour would make companies consider robot workers. "It's cheaper to buy a $35,000 robotic arm than it is to hire an employee who is inefficient, making $15 an hour bagging French fries," he said.
  • Spotify family plan is now $14.99 - Spotify has offered Family Plans for some time now, but today the company is sweetening the deal while matching rival music streaming services from Apple and Google. The company has announced it is now allowing up to up to six listeners (they don't really need to be family) to grab a Premium subscription for $15 a month. Previously, Spotify charged $14.99 for two listeners and up to $29.99 for a family of five. The new pricing structure is rolling out globally starting today, except in Canada for some reason. Current Spotify family plan subscribers will automatically get upgraded to the new plan and should see a lower bill the next time they are charged.
  • Pebble Reveals Two New Watches and 3G Connected Button - Pebble today announced the Pebble 2 and Time 2 smartwatches, as well as the Core connected button. The two wearables target fitness users and include heart rate monitors for tracking workouts and monitoring sleep. Pebble recently updated its health tools, and the Pebble 2 and Time 2 are able to take advantage of the upgraded software. Both devices serve notifications, show the owner's schedule, control music, run some 13,000 apps, and perform simple tasks. Each has an e-paper display and is water resistant down to 30 meters. The Pebble 2 can run for seven days and costs $99, while the Time 2 can run for 10 days and costs $169. They work with Android an iOS smartphones. The Core is a 3G-enabled fob that Pebble says acts as a smartphone when on the go. The device has two buttons that can be programmed to do anything, such as start/stop streaming Spotify playlists. The Core has Bluetooth, WiFi, and GPS radios, and can act as a relay to the internet for Pebble smartwatches. It can be paired with Bluetooth headsets and accept voice commands, serve as a hotspot, and sync with select fitness apps. The Core costs $99. All three devices are available for pre-order via Kickstarter. The Pebble 2 ships in September, the Time 2 ships in November, and the Core ships in early 2017.
  • How Deep Learning Can Paint Videos in the Style of Art's Great - Thanks to Instagram and Snapchat, adding filters to images and videos is pretty straight forward. But what if you could repaint your smartphone videos in the style of van Gogh's Starry Night or Munch's The Scream? A team of researchers from Germany's University of Freiburg has made significant strides toward this goal using an approach to artificial intelligence called deep learning. The team developed a method that uses a deep neural network to extract a specific artistic style from a source painting, and then synthesizes this information with the content of a separate video. NVIDIA GPUs make it possible to crunch through this computationally intensive work with striking results.

TechNews - Will you be upgrading to GTX 1080? - tech
(hx) 01:13 PM CEST - May,21 2016 - Post a comment / read (5)
  • The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Preview: A Look at What's to Come - Looking at the raw specifications then, GTX 1080 does not disappoint. Though we're looking at fewer CUDA cores than the GM200 based GTX 980 Ti or Titan, NVIDIA’s significant focus on clockspeed means that GP104's 2560 CUDA cores are far more performant than a simple core count would suggest. The base clockspeed of 1607MHz is some 42% higher than GTX 980 (and 60% higher than GTX 980 Ti), and the 1733MHz boost clockspeed is a similar gain. On paper, GTX 1080 is set to offer 78% better performance than GTX 980, and 47% better performance than GTX 980 Ti. The real world gains are, of course, not quite this great, but they’re also relatively close to these numbers at times.
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition Review - The GTX 1080 is packing 8GB of ridiculously fast GDDR5X memory and a core that just thumps down an impressive FPS performance that is needed to deliver great gameplay in today's ever more visually appealing games. All while running the eye candy turned way up even when running at 4K. There really is no performance comparison at this time that comes close. Even the Maxwell-based fastest cards on the planet pale in comparison to the GTX 1080.
  • Microsoft releases update rollup for Windows 7 SP1 - Microsoft has released an update rollup for Windows 7 Service Pack 1 and Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 that it's calling a "convenience rollup." Since this update roll-up includes almost all of the updates Microsoft has released since Service Pack 1 was released, it should simplify new Windows 7 installs. Unfortunately, the convenience rollup is only available through the Microsoft Update Catalog, a legacy website that doesn't support non-Internet Explorer browsers. Running Internet Explorer with ActiveX controls enabled is currently the only way to download the package.
  • Windows Malware Tries To Avoid 400 Security Products - The malware's name comes from Latin and means 'stealthy,' Yotam Gottesman, a Senior Security Researcher at enSilo explains, adding that the program goes through great lengths to avoid being caught by security parties: it includes checks for 400 security products. Should any of the products on this extensive list be found on the targeted machine, the malware terminates itself and leaves the computer unharmed.  Built to target Windows computers, the malware was first discovered by a researcher that goes by the name of @hFireF0X, who noticed that none of the 56 anti-virus programs tested by VirusTotal service detected the new threat. It's unclear who is behind the malware as of now, but it is clear that the actor would abort infection rather than being caught.  Furtim is deployed as a binary file named “native.dll,” which is a driver supposedly meant to be loaded by the kernel, researchers explain. The analyzed sample was 295 KB in size, was compiled on October 22, 2015, and came unpacked, although it did show protection mechanisms.
  • Google Shows Off YouTube VR App for Daydream - Google has announced YouTube VR, a version of YouTube dedicated to virtual reality. It will be among the first apps to support Daydream, Google's new VR platform for Android devices. YouTube says the VR app will support voice search, browsing/discovery, and playlists. Google says all YouTube content - whether captured in 360-degree/3D or not - will be available via YouTube VR. Google is working with content creators and camera makers to ensure that plenty of 360-degree content is available when the app launches. Google expects YouTube VR to arrive with Daydream in the fall. It will only work with Android phones. Google didn't say if YouTube VR will be compatible with other VR headsets, such as Gear VR or Oculus.
  • Android Apps Headed to Google's Chromebooks - Google has said its Chrome operating system will soon have access to the Google Play Store and the Android apps therein. ChromeOS will support all Android phone and tablet apps, including games, productivity apps, and social networking. Android apps can run in three different window sizes in ChromeOS and users will be able to move the windows around and multitask as needed. Keyboard, mouse, and touch input will all work together within Android apps, and Android-based notifications will be pushed to Chromebooks as well as phones. Moreover, users will be able share files seamlessly between Chrome and Android devices through a new Files app. Google says developers can add admin-level network support to their Android apps for Chrome so businesses and schools can control options such as Bluetooth and WiFi. Android games should run very well on Chromebooks, according to Google. Google Play for Chrome will be available to developers on the Asus Chromebook Flip, Acer Chromebook R 11, and the Chromebook Pixel with a wider launch expected later this year. Google says it will add support for Android apps to more Chromebooks over time. ChromeOS is Google's light-weight, browser-based operating system that runs on inexpensive laptops.
  • Apple releases iOS 9.3.2, OS X 10.11.5, watchOS 2.2.1, and tvOS - After a seemingly endless beta cycle, Apple has finally released iOS 9.3.2, OS X 10.11.5 El Capitan, watchOS 2.2.1, and tvOS 9.2.1 to all supported devices. As the version numbers indicate, there isn't any notable front-facing features in these updates. Instead, they focus on bug fixes and performance improvements.
  • Apple pulls iOS 9.3.2 for the 9.7" iPad Pro after bricking reports - Apple has pulled iOS version 9.3.2 for its 9.7" iPad Pro today after users reported that the update caused their devices to enter an unusable state. iMore's Rene Ritchie shared a Tweet with a statement from Apple that confirms the take-down. The problem reared its head as early as Tuesday, when Ritchie posted a statement from Apple indicating that iOS 9.3.2 was bricking a "small number" of customer iPads with an "Error 56" message. "Error 56" indicates a hardware error with the device. Affected users are told to attempt an iTunes restore to recover the device, but MacRumors reports that the recovery process enters into a boot loop where the device is never able to restore. Apple says affected users should contact its customer support team for assistance. This issue doesn't appear to affect any other Apple devices aside from the 9.7" iPad Pro.
  • Sprint Rolls Out BOGO Offer for the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus - Sprint today launched a buy one, get one free promotion for Apple's latest iPhones. The offer includes both the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus. Customers must have an eligible upgrade and initiate at least one new line of service in order to qualify for the offer. Sprint said customers may purchase the iPhones on a monthly installment plan, lease the iPhones, or lease one and buy the other. However customers choose to pay for the iPhones, the cost of the second handset will be offset by a service credit applied each month. Sprint is also offering to cut $200 from the price of the latest iPads for customers who buy a new iPhone and iPad together on an installment plan. Sprint didn't say how long the buy one, get one offer will be available. It has offered similar programs for the Samsung Galaxy S7 and LG G5 smartphones.
  • Sprint Packages 40GB Shared Plan with Amazon Prime  - Sprint today announced the Amazon Better Choice XXL plan, which includes 40GB of shareable LTE data and a year of Amazon Prime. Subscribers also get unlimited talk and text, Sprint Global Roaming, international texting, and mobile hotspot. The Amazon Better Choice XXL plan costs $100 per month, which does not include per-line access charges ($20) and monthly device payments. This plan, which is available to new and existing customers, requires subscribers to sign a one-year contract. Customers not interested in signing a contract can still choose to add Amazon Prime to their monthly bill for $10.99. Amazon Prime includes online storage for files and photos, as well as Amazon Music and Amazon Video streaming services, and expedited shipping on purchases made from Amazon.com.

Google I/O 2016 - Keynote - tech
(hx) 11:36 PM CEST - May,18 2016 - Post a comment / read (3)
Google today outlined some of the new features in Google Play Services 9.0. Specifically, there are a handful of new APIs that will let developers add more functionality to their apps. For example, the Video Recording API will allow developers to add video recording the their own apps, as well as make those videos easy to share via YouTube or other apps. The updated Nearby API will let apps scan for nearby Bluetooth low energy beacons without additional permissions. This will give beacon owners (and the developers who wrote the apps for them) more leeway to send messages to Android devices as they roam near beacons. Play Services 9.0 makes changes to the Player Stats API, which lets developers gain more insight to gameplay, what actions gamers are likely to pursue, and whether or not they'll spend more money. In a related change, Play Services 9.0 makes improvements to how developers can integrate ads and ad campaigns into their apps. Google didn't say when Play Services will be distributed to end-user devices.

What Makes NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 1080 So Fast? - tech
(hx) 11:31 PM CEST - May,13 2016 - Post a comment
The chaps over at VR World think they have a pretty good handle on what makes NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 1080 so fast. Definitely good reading!
Stock GTX 1080 is clocked at 1.66 GHz, with Turbo Boost lifting it to 1.73 GHz. Founders Edition includes overclocking-friendly BIOS to raise the clocks to at least 2 GHz, and the presentation showed the chip running at 2.1 GHz. The main limiting factor for the overclocking beyond 2.2 GHz is 225 Watts, which is how much the board can officially pull from the power circuitry: 75 Watts from the motherboard and 150 W through 8-pin PEG connector. However, there are power supply manufacturers which provide more juice per rail, and we've seen single 8-pin connector delivering 225 W on its own. Still, partners such as ASUS, Colorful, EVGA, Galax, GigaByte, MSI are preparing custom boards with 2-3 8-pin connectors. According to our sources, reaching 2.5 GHz using a liquid cooling setup such as Corsair H115i or EK Waterblocks should not be too much of a hassle.

Search for performance lead the company to remove as much legacy options as possible, and you can no longer connect the GTX 1080 with an analog display. D-SUB15 is now firmly in the past, and you cannot make the connection work even if you use a 3rd party adapter. The rest of connectors include a 144Hz-capable DVI, three DisplayPort 1.4 and a single HDMI 2.0B connector.

Just a day ahead of the Bethesda's official launch of the new Doom game, AMD has rolled out its new Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.5.2 drivers which include all the game optimizations for the game.

As this is not a big driver update, the main part are the optimizations for the upcoming upcoming Bethesda and id Software Doom game, scheduled to officially launch tomorrow, May 13th. In addition to the optimizations for the Doom, which probably also includes Crossfire Profile for the game, the new Radeon Software 16.5.2 drivers also bring some other performance and stability improvements and bug fixes.

According to the release notes, the new Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.5.2 drivers also bring a new Crossfire profile for Battleborn game and fixes some issues seen with earlier drivers, including a couple of issues with Radeon Settings, issues seen with Frame Rate Target Control (FRTC), issues in games like League of Legends and Star Wars: Battlefront as well as Hitman in Crossfire.

As it was the case with earlier driver releases, the new Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.5.2 drivers also support all Radeon graphics cards since HD 7700/HD 7900 days and are available for Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 OS in both 32-bit and 64-bit flavors.

Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 announced - tech
(madmax) 10:10 AM CEST - May,07 2016 - Post a comment / read (10)
At a special event today, Nvidia announced their new flagship graphics card: the GeForce GTX 1080. The card uses a new Pascal GPU built on a 16nm FinFET process, as well as GDDR5X memory from Micron. Nvidia says they spent several billions of dollars developing Pascal, and the result is a massive GPU capable of powering today and tomorrow's games at ultra quality settings. It's also energy efficient thanks to improvements in the way Nvidia delivers power to the GPU, making Pascal the company's most efficient architecture yet.

According to Nvidia, the GTX 1080 is "a whole lot" faster than the Titan X, and faster than two GTX 980s in SLI, while consuming a lot less power. The chart below sees the GTX 1080 consume around 180W of power, compared to the 165W TDP of the GTX 980, with performance around 30% faster than the Titan X. An on-stage demo of the GTX 1080 had the card's core running at 2.1 GHz air cooled, with a temperature of less than 70°C. While these aren't the stock clock speeds for the 1080, it shows just how overclocking friendly this card will be. The stock clock speeds for the GTX 1080 are 1607 MHz with a boost of 1733 MHz, on 2,560 CUDA cores. This suggests the card is using a GP104 core rather than the full GP100 GPU used on the Tesla P100, which comes partially-disabled with 3,584 CUDA cores.

The GTX 1080 will retail for $599 in its basic edition, and $699 for "Founder's Edition", although it's not completely clear what benefits the Founder's Edition will bring. The card will be available worldwide from May 27th. There will also be a GTX 1070 available for $379 ($449 for the Founder's Edition), which Nvidia says is faster than a GTX Titan X, packing 6.5 TFLOPs of performance and 8 GB of GDDR5 memory. The GTX 1070 will be available from June 10th.

  • Intel Optane Demo - File Transfer at 2GB/s - It is great to see XPoint / Optane technology being demonstrated again, but as far as demos go, this was not the best / fairest example that Intel could have put together. First of all, the 'NAND SSD' they are using is a Thunderbolt 3 connected external, which was clearly bottlenecked badly somewhere else in the chain (when was the last time you saw a 6 Gbit SATA SSD limited to only 283 MB/s). Also, using SATA for the NAND example while using PCIe x4 NVMe for the Optane example seems a bit extreme to me.
  • AMD Polaris 10 Allegedly Performs Close To A GTX 980 Ti - The crew at WCCFTech have posted what they claim are leaked specs showing the upcoming AMD Polaris performing close to a GTX 980 Ti.
  • The Samsung 750 EVO (120GB & 250GB) SSD Review: A Return To Planar NAND -  The Samsung 750 EVO is a drive for a limited audience. It is intended for use as the primary boot drive of a system that will not be subjected to particularly intense storage workloads, and the limited capacity options preclude using it to hold a large game or multimedia library. Seen through this lens, the 750 EVO offers great performance for a budget drive. The peak performance of the 750 EVO is close to the Samsung 850 EVO and even the 850 Pro in many cases. On tests simulating lighter real-world usage the 750 EVO is generally the fastest budget TLC drive and also sometimes competes well against low-end MLC drives.
  • Acer's Liquid Zest Plus Packs 5,000mAh Battery - Acer has provided a preview of the Liquid Zest Plus, an Android phone that features a 5,000mAh battery with Quick Charge support that provides "days" of uptime. Other than the battery, the Liquid Zest Plus includes an average feature set, including a 5.5-inch HD screen, MediaTek processor, 2 GB of RAM, and 16 GB of storage. The phone's main camera has a 13-megapixel sensor with laser-assisted and phase detection autofocus. The 5-megapixel selfie camera has a wide angle of view. The phone ships with Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Acer could not confirm pricing details, nor could it say if the phone will be sold in the U.S.
  • Gold Wires and Electrolyte Gel Improve Battery Longevity - Researchers at the University of California at Irvine say they've found a way to increase the number of charge cycles a battery has from a few thousand to more than 200,000. Their discovery could lead to batteries that can be recharged repeatedly for years without losing capacity, which his something that happens with today's lithium-ion batteries. The researchers coated gold nanowire with manganese oxide and a layer of electrolyte gel. The gel and manganese oxide prevent corrosion. The nanowire holds the charge. The longer the wire, the greater the charge contained within. Using gel, rather than liquid, is what provided the breakthrough in this case, but the researchers don't yet fully understand the mechanism behind their discovery. The researchers' next steps include making a true battery from the gold-and-gel combo, discerning the mechanism of action, and then testing if other materials can be substituted for the gold. Adding gold to batteries, even in small quantities, would add to their cost. The researchers did not say if or when their discovery might be commercialized in consumer products.
  • Verizon to Kick Off HTC 10 Preorders April 29 - Verizon Wireless has said it will begin accepting preorders for the HTC 10 on April 29. Verizon expects the phone to launch in early May and has not yet provided pricing details for the phone. Verizon is giving consumers the opportunity to test the HTC 10 in retail stores, also starting on April 29. Verizon says the 10 will include its HD Voice service and WiFi Calling. The phone includes several Verizon offers, such as three free months of HBO Now, credit for handset trade-ins, and ETF payoffs for customers who switch to Verizon. An unlocked version of the HTC 10 is already available for sale directly from HTC.com for $699.
  • Samsung and The Weather Channel Team Up for Galaxy App - Samsung and The Weather Channel have created an exclusive weather app only for owners of Galaxy-branded smartphones. The Weather Channel App for Samsung offers features the regular Weather Channel app does not include. For example, a tool called Smart Weather Wakeup will trigger users' alarm clocks a bit earlier than normal when bad weather may impact their routine. Another tool called Floating Shortcuts provides direct access to information such as current conditions or daily forecasts. The app includes new, dynamic weather backgrounds for Samsung phones, and targets Galaxy Edge models with customized alerts for the edge panel. The Weather Channel App for Samsung is available from the Galaxy Apps Store for the S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge+, Note 5, S7, and S7 Edge. Samsung said it plans to eventually expand the app's availability to other platforms, including the Gear S2 smartwatch and select Samsung Smart TVs.

DX11 vs DX12 Intel CPU Scaling/Gaming Framerate - tech
(hx) 02:36 PM CEST - Apr,20 2016 - Post a comment / read (1)
What does DX12 mean to those of you running an Intel processor with an older GPU? What kind of performance gains can we expect from DX12 on newer high end GPUs when used with an Intel processor?
Let's start by saying that most of these Ashes of the Singularity benchmarks can easily be put into the "theoretical" column. While I am sure someone somewhere will email me an exception, these high end Fury X and 980 Ti video cards being paired with a 1.2GHz processor is not likely. Conversely, a GTX 670 or Radeon 7970 being paired with a $1000+ Intel Core i7-5960X for gaming is a bit far fetched as well, albeit much more likely to be found in the wild I would think.

One thing that is interesting in all of these benchmarks over the last couple of weeks is a trend that "favors" AMD overall and DX12. While much of the headlines have been about how NVIDIA is lacking at DX12 performance, if you look at the "low end" benchmarks where the benchmark is CPU limited, NVIDIA's cards actually give a much better DX11 experience. Even the lowly GTX 670 gives a 39.4% performance increase at over the Radeon 7970 at LOW settings with the 1.2GHz CPU under DX11. Moving to DX12 on that same comparison, we see the two systems pull within 2 frames per second of each other. These results surely hold up the arguments that NVIDIA's GPU pipeline is much more in tune with handling DX11 instructions, and AMD's is much more svelte and certainly shorter when it comes to DX12.

Nvidia have released driver 364.96 for their graphic cards, and it’s one of their smaller updates in recent years. On the whole, it just seems to add game ready compatibility to Nvidia cards for the upcoming open beta of DOOM. That’s right, even betas get game ready drivers now.
There doesn't seem to be any SLI profile for the beta, which indicates that the final game won’t support multiple GPUs- then again, this could be an issue restricted to just the beta. The full changelog follows:

This is GeForce Hot Fix driver version 364.96 that addresses the following:

Support for DOOM Open Beta
Known issues:

GFE may show the following error if launched without a network connection: “GeForce Experience encountered an error and must close”

Quantum Break Won't Support Multi-GPUs - tech
(hx) 05:08 PM CEST - Apr,13 2016 - Post a comment / read (3)
Remedy has just released a new FAQ about the current state of its latest title, Quantum Break:
Windows 10 Issues & Solutions

Stuttering Frame-Rate / Frame Pacing
There was a major rounding error introduced into our refresh rate predictions on shipping. A solution to this issue is already being worked on; we expect it to be resolved in a Quantum Break Title Update launching in the near future.

Windows 10 Performance Issues
Remedy is looking into how to improve the overall performance of the game. Part of that is working closely with AMD and NVIDIA to address issues and improve the gameplay experience.

Sometimes, after a longer play session, the game can end up to a state where the video memory becomes fragmented, and an important asset gets moved to system memory, which slows the rendering performance significantly. This problem is very rare and Remedy will continue to investigate and improve the video memory behavior in future updates.

If you experience this issue, exiting and restarting Quantum Break will resolve this issue for now. This is one way to identify if you have encountered this issue or if it’s another potential problem.

Graphics Drivers:
We recommend, for AMD Radeon GPU’s, AMD Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.4.1

We recommend, for NVIDIA GPU’s, 362.00 from NVIDIA.

Keep in mind, these drivers might have an impact on other software on your computer.

Windows 10 Frame Rate Locked?
In May, Microsoft will be enabling the ability for developers to disable v-sync and adding support for G-Sync and Freesync monitors. This means that UWP games running in full screen, borderless windowed mode will have all of the performance advantages of traditional full screen exclusive mode.

No Option to Quit from Main Menu
We hear you! By popular demand, we are adding an exit option to the main menu in an upcoming title update. For now, similar to all Windows 10 apps, you will need to use Alt-F4 or move the mouse cursor to top right corner of the window to the see the X icon, which you can click to exit the game.

Crashing on Launch
We have been able to repro at least one reason for a rare crash on launch– with some SIMD instructions that require SSE4.1. We are working on fixing that in a future title update, and will fix any other issues we find as they are reported.

Image Quality
We are working on giving users more control to turn on and off features like film grain. We love the artistic choice for our game, but we also want to give PC gamers more choice and this will come in a future update.

Does Quantum Break support SLI or other multi-GPU solutions?
Quantum Break on Windows 10 unfortunately doesn’t support DirectX12 multi-GPU rendering. Due to the engine architecture, the work needed to support multiple GPUs would have been significant and out of scope for Remedy for Quantum Break.
In other news, the Remedy Community Forums have a response from Remedy to recently identified issues with Quantum Break:
The entire development team at Remedy Entertainment and Microsoft Studios want to thank all our fans for the success that Quantum Break has experienced since it launched last week on April 5. We have spent the last four years working on Quantum Break – the ultimate Remedy Entertainment game as we call it – and to see how warmly it has been received by gamers worldwide has been exhilarating and incredibly rewarding.

We are aware that some players are facing issues with the Windows 10 version of Quantum Break and some extent on Xbox One. We want to let you know that we are working diligently with Microsoft Studios on addressing all the feedback; below are the things we know about today that are being worked on.

We want to thank our fans again for all their continued support for Remedy and apologize for any problems you have faced playing Quantum Break. We are paying close attention to forums and the discussion online about Quantum Break and are doing our best to solve the issues you are experiencing.

NVIDIA Unveils The Tesla P100, Its Fastest GPU Ever - tech
(hx) 12:45 AM CEST - Apr,06 2016 - Post a comment / read (3)
For those of you that haven't been following along with the keynote speech from this year's GPU Technology Conference, NVIDIA has made a number of product announcements today, including the Tesla P100. According to NVIDIA's CEO Jen-Hsun Huang, the Tesla P100 is based on the new NVIDIA Pascal GP100, at 600mm² is the largest FinFET GPU ever made. Huang even joked on stage that it was so big that you could easily see it from the back of the room. In addition to features like HBM2, NVLink, Unified memory and 16nm FinFET, NVIDIA says the GP100 is "composed of an array of Graphics Processing Clusters (GPCs), Streaming Multiprocessors (SMs), and memory controllers. GP100 achieves its colossal throughput by providing six GPCs, up to 60 SMs, and eight 512-bit memory controllers (4096 bits total). The Pascal architecture’s computational prowess is more than just brute force: it increases performance not only by adding more SMs than previous GPUs, but by making each SM more efficient. AMD has released a new update to their Radeon Software Crimson Edition graphics card driver, version 16.4.1, that includes performance optimizations for Remedy Entertainment's Quantum Break, which is set to launch on April 5th. According to AMD's driver release notes, users can expect to see up to 35% better performance in Quantum Break when playing the game on a Radeon R9 Fury X. AMD has also introduced support for the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive in this driver, which should be arriving in the hands of consumers very soon, if not already. The 16.4.1 drivers fix issues where some DirectX 12 games were frame rate capped, and where Hitman flickered at high shadow settings. There are still a collection of known issues thorugh, such as Need for Speed's poor Crossfire scaling, The Division flickering in Crossfire mode, and low fan speeds on a small subset of Radeon R9 380 owners.
