Silent Storm
(hx) 12:16 PM CET - Feb,09 2004

Developed by Russian based developers Nival Interactive, Silent Storm is a turn-based tactical combat game with RPG elements, in the vein of X-Com, Fallout: Tactics and Jagged Alliance 2. It's 1943 and you, as a battle-tested veteran, are chosen to lead an elite squad of special operatives on secret missions behind enemy lines. Your main goal throughout the game is to disrupt your enemy's war operations and gather valuable intelligence.

At the start of the game, you'll get to select your side (Axis or the Allies), your avatar and five additional squad members. There are over 40 different playable characters that you can use to outfit your squad - 20 for the Allies and 20 for the Axis. Each character is unique with its own background, profession, specialties and personality. You can either take a pre-fab character to adjust him or her slightly, or you can choose from a large collection of body types and then create your own face. There are six classes to choose from: Sniper, Soldier, Medic, Grenadier, Scout, and Engineer. The Sniper focuses on the use of single shot weapons, the Soldier specializes in the big, bad guns, the Medic can treat injuries and cure things like bleeding, the Grenadier is very similar to the Soldier, only focused more on grenades and heavy weapons, the Scout is stealthy killer, favoring silent killing typically with a melee weapon and finally the Engineer is your basic lock-picking and trap specialist. RPG system in Silent Storm is based on characters' attributes, including basic attributes (Strength, Dexterity and Intelligence) and secondary attributes, derivatives of the basic ones. In addition to attributes, characters have skills and abilities. Skills determine how good characters are at certain things, e.g. using firearms, engineering, medicine etc. As you progress through the game your characters will level up and you will be able to select various abilities in the ability tree. The more you use a particular skill, the better your character will be at it. The best thing is that there are no limits to what any character can do, for example a medic can handle any weapon or set explosives and an engineer can administer first aid.

There are two non-linear campaigns (Axis / Allies ~ over 24 missions in total), with an united storyline and maps that cover areas of England, Germany and Russia. You travel the world map from your landing zone to areas of interest which are highlighted on the map. There is no set order to missions, but there is some kind of plot tree based on clues. Every time you start the game, the mission randomizer scatters clues and information throughout the plot. If you succeed in retrieving such information, new missions, locations, and objectives become available to the squad. Combat is pretty rewarding and sometimes pretty difficult. The game plays in real-time mode however any destructive impact (a shot, a thrown grenade etc.) automatically switches the game to turn-based mode. Actions not connected with destroying objects (moving around, picking up and swapping things, setting up mines and booby-traps etc.) can be taken both in real-time and turn-based modes. During one turn in turn-based mode, a character can take actions which in real time would last from 6 to 30 seconds (e.g. firing a long burst takes much less time than dressing a wound, with identical AP costs). Waiting for the opposition to complete their turn might take tens of seconds or more (depends on your CPU speed) because all allied and enemy characters act taking turns, one after another. There are over 75 authentic WWII-era weapons, including different types of knives, daggers, mines, grenades, rocket launchers, pistols, SMGs, rifles, explosives and bullet types for weapons. Apart from standard weapons, your characters can also acquire such rare examples as a Shuriken, Chakra, Katana Sword, Wood Chopping Axe and many more. For players who enjoy games that employ authentic WWII weapons, Silent Storm has more to offer than nearly any other title out there.

Overall, Silent Storm is pretty addictive game. Once you have mastered the interface, your next challenge is to use enough strategy to overcome the enemy and complete objectives. The enemy AI is pretty good, not perfect, but pretty good. Let me tell you the game is very challenging (but rewarding). My only complaint is that this game lacks any multiplayer. I would have loved to be able to play against (or even cooperatively) with some pals on LAN/Internet. I'd recommend it to anybody who enjoys turn-based tactical combat games. Try the demo and if you like it then get the game.

System requirements:
Minimum: CPU 600 MHz, 128MB RAM, 3D accelerator 32MB (nVidia GeForce2MX compatible or better), Mouse, Sound card, CD-ROM, 2,5 GB of free hard drive space plus about 500 MB for Windows swap file and save games
Recommended: CPU 2.2GHz, 512MB RAM, 3D accelerator 128MB (nVidia GeForceFX/Radeon 9700Pro), Mouse, Sound card, CD-ROM, 2,5 GB of free hard drive space plus about 500 MB for Windows swap file and save games

snd: 4/5 - sound effects are nicely done, mediocre voice acting
gfx: 4/5 - solid, fully destructible environment, impressive rag doll physics model, camera could be done better
playability: 5/5 - very enjoyable&addictive, two independent campaigns (over 24 missions), rich character development system, many weapons&items, extremely mod-friendly (editor, tools, docs), three difficulty settings, no multiplayer, amount of time it requires for the computer to take its turn
genre: turn-based tactical combat game with RPG elements
release: January 2004 (US)
developer: Nival Interactive
the game is similar to: X-Com, Fallout: Tactics, Jagged Alliance 2
publisher: Encore Software
Excellent
Overall: 85%

This game rocks, play it. I've never before played such a detailed simulation which has had so much thought and consideration put into the game design.

Bubba 2ndposted - Feb, 09 2004 - 12:56
MH is right, This would have to be one of the TOP 3 turnbased games ever constructed by man.

magaposted - Feb, 09 2004 - 14:01
i subscribe ! i still want a TB game set in a SF theme

ownageposted - Feb, 09 2004 - 15:09
by the llok of the screenshots i would say it sucks ass bigtime.especially graphics but maybe the gameplay isnt half bad.

GrooveManposted - Feb, 09 2004 - 18:04
Sorry, but don't listen to Ownage... Silent Storm is one of the best-looking strategy games on the market. The game runs on a complete 3D Engine, no Sprites here. The Lighting, Textures, Bump Mapping, Models and Explosions are Amazing. And on top of all that the Game Engine is incredible. Watch out, this game (with the options cranked) will make your system cry like a little girl. If you enjoyed X-Com, Fallout, or Jagged Alliance, you will be blow away by this game. Man I can’t wait for the Expansion. BTW. There is an X-Com MOD in the works.

jeez, don't even dare to compare this dull commandos clone to fallout

bioposted - Feb, 09 2004 - 21:19
the game is the dogs dangly bits, no line of site for your grenadier! blow the building up. Cant bo botherd with stairs! blow a hole in the floor. Door ways blocked! c4 + wall = new doorway. The fact that nearly everything is destructible is one reason why every body should try this. As for it being a commandos clone - it is turn based, you charcters stats grow, its fully 3D. enough said. enjoy

xxxxposted - Feb, 09 2004 - 22:28
Grooveman, whats your system? nvidia here dude, no lag and it's cranked. it's a nice game too. again hx knows how to rate em! =)

Who think L.A. (the ONLY female engineer) in the game is sexy? It's impossible to not pick L.A. since one other engineer is a grandpa and the last one is a nerdy looking guy... :D

"So much thought and consideration put into the game design." Like having six guys stand in a doorway and kill anybody who goes through, right? Sure! That's the way WW II was won!

Corelliposted - Feb, 10 2004 - 13:42
Great game. Everyone moans about the voice acting but it's laugh out loud funny in places. The weapons are just great, firing a bren gun through a brisk wall and blowing the german through the window the other side, sheer class. One of my all time favourite games. Although if you like no-brainer shooters, this is not for you.

MHposted - Feb, 10 2004 - 15:20
"Like having six guys stand in a doorway and kill anybody who goes through, right? Sure! That's the way WW II was won!"

Actually, no. Like the first time you take a single shot at someone takes slightly more AP and being slightly less accurate than the second shot you take, because when you take the second shot your character is already pointing the gun at the target.

The shooting/aiming model is incredibly detailed and well thought out.

Also like the path finding will plot a route from the ground to the top of a semi-destroyed building that you'd have never found otherwise.

Also like the little idle animations, a crouching character shifts and rubs their legs.

Also like the physics engine, properties of materials, deformable objects. If you don't have a door way you can always make one with a long burst from a suitable weapon.

Also like the one-liner comments, which are as Corelli points out Laugh Out Loud funny. I think the voice acting is superbly humourous.

This isn't to say that this game is perfect, or without bugs & glitches. BUT this game is highly polished, to a degree that embarrasses most game releases these days.

Bottom line: If you like turn-based squad tactical games, than you will love this one, if you're not a fan of the genre than obviously this game isn't necessarily for you.

I have an amd xp 1.8ghz with 512 SDRam, a geforce fx 5600 and the game runs very slow...especially in the second level.. Ive made some changes in a configuration file..but its almost the same. Its a pitty because i loved to play the first two missions, then i gave up playing it...because it was too slow.. :(

Jason Hitman Jr,posted - Feb, 10 2004 - 19:12
SnakeEyes, you need to update your video card to the latest cards why take your pc down to the "best buy" nearest to you and have them put in a brand new "Radeon 9600 Pro". This R9600 Pro will certainly handles ANY latest pc games other there super fast and extremely beautiful graphics too.

GrooveManposted - Feb, 10 2004 - 21:30
Even with a high-end system you will still experience some minor lag. Play the Russian Factory level and you'll see what I mean. Oh Yeah…My System Specs. Radeon 9800pro AMD 2800 1 Gig of Kingston RAM

Tomposted - Feb, 10 2004 - 22:23
SDRam sucks, DDR is what you should have you have a dated system mac. I'm playing 5900 and it runs great. 2ghz, 1gig ram. Radeon.. gimme a break. Speak for yourself Grooveman.. Your card is 10-15fps better than a 9700, funny as my system is underpowered supposedly to yours and i got no problems... This is a great game! Knew I'd hear ATI'rs bellyaching.. just love hearing it, now! Ahhhh...got to screenshot these comments! Jason Hitman.. ur disillusioned, thanks to Grooveman for proving that.

ya right, what was the problem with NWN Alfred Jefferson? oh ya shit code or shit computer systems, oh and while your at it can you explain C&C performance issues(not fixed) as well the problems with COD that were just previously fixed... Hey Grooveman, who gives a shit? DDR moron..I got rid of my card and all my problems and i'm presently saving people all around me that are upgrading too, on my newsgroups in the office I got a whole thread that PRO-nVidia and there's Shit you can do about it. If you want a good card people, nVidia is the hassle free, driver stability card, dont get a card that ATI only listens to a select few and the rest is blamed on you. Ask yourself, why did ATI 'really' lower their prices, cuz most gamers are sticking with nVidia and so ATI can cling to the top they had to match nvidia due to lost sales... Ask Radeon users about shadows and fog.. or better yet, look at their systems.. Hahaha, when Counter-Strike can lag a Radeon, that's pretty sad. Ya! Top notch tech there! LOL! Silent Storm ran like crap on my 9700, with my nVidia it's as smooth as a DOS game..Everything now is as smooth as hell. Just remember these words when you get back home and have stuttering and other lockups with your RadeonRules card..

GrooveManposted - Feb, 12 2004 - 00:01
Very interesting Tom... So I'm a moron and who gives a sh*t?... So now you say the Radeon 9800pro uses DDR RAM (which is correct btw)... But Son you said earlier that it used SDR RAM, and you "not giving a Sh*t" ripped my system due to that made up fact... Looks to me like you’re the moron who “gives a shit.”... The Radeon 9800pro is a Very Fast, Inexpensive video card... and ATI has great driver support... All the things Nvidia had and was, too bad really... Back in the day, I loved my GeForce 4.

posted - Feb, 12 2004 - 00:26
tom no problems with shadows here. everyone buy ati

Hugh Dublinposted - Feb, 12 2004 - 04:15
Tom, C&C performance (not fixed) is a BUG and it comes with it when it ship-out to retailers stores. This problems CAN be fixed you just need to update C&C to it latest patch that all. Now the video cards (Radeon 9600,9700 & 9800XT) are not make to fix problems on your pc or fix your BUGS-UP games. It goal is that to bring out a totally eyes popping effects such as graphics, smootheness, butt kicking animations, and many more. My pc is using a AIW ATI Radeon 9600 Pro, and it run smooth-ass hell even during the extremely intensive moment. On the bottomline I say buy ATI's Radeon video cards is way better than Nvidia cards. Why you might ask because ATI's company is way more experience than Nvidia company.

|\|\/1D1@posted - Feb, 12 2004 - 05:23
Alfred Jefferson - you would be happy with a 9600??? your opinion just went RIGHT OUT THE WINDOW. The rest of you ATI-girls are just cut because you KNOW nVidia has more balls, and you're about to get whipped HARD! ATI doesn't even have vivo! Tom ... you can take it from here. Finish off these whining little women... Your outspoken opinion for nVidia makes you my hero. Top stuff.

Zachary Rowelandposted - Feb, 12 2004 - 05:43
It true nvidia finally make a much deserves or a much more advance video card namely thier latest FX5900. But it comes out to late to safe nvidia butt because ATI's Radeon video cards is already reign supreme. ATI's Radeon video cards is considered to be the most advance video cards to have ever made in the face of the planet ever. A game test between the latest Radeon 9800 XT and the Nvidia latest FX5900 show that at the end Radeon 9800 XT shit all over Nvidia in terms of frame per minute, graphics, quality and every thing else in between. Nvidia latest video cards might cost more than Radeon 9800 XT but when it comes to the BEST EVER MADE video cards in the world ATI's RADEON video cards rules'em all.

No Groove man, I was talking to SnakeEyes.. I love you ATI people, just blindly look at present like its been the past 10 years. nVidia has been stomping ATI's ass since it was first out. For 1 measily year ATI has some tainted reviews of how good their card is and to you, Radeon rules(ya that extra 10fps is a killer card). That shows how fucking stupid you are. Enjoy it while it lasts.. But still I can enjoy "any" game stutter free, you can lie all you want to promote ATI's second rate cards but who are you hurting? innocent people, kids with little money that save up, people with families looking to make sure there money lasts a long time. If they had gotten nvidia they wouldn't have problems. But like Rage3d site.. you're all ignorant users who are likely new to PC gaming..nVidia knows the business way better than your Canadian company ATI previously only really known for the Mach64. And Zachary Roweland, you are a perfect example of a clued out gamer. If you are even a gamer. Just another flake who believes everything he reads and likely another ATI fanboy from Rage3d.

Tomposted - Feb, 12 2004 - 21:08
8 fps gains over nvidia equivalent doesn't make it a better game. Only marketing and bias from sites does that. To deny nVidia runs best with every game simply shows you don't know anything.. and seeing how you don't even specify your e-mail address shows you have zero appreciation for this site or the people that post here. Also shows you don't stand behind anything you say. Go back to Rage3d and use their gaming forums and bitch all you like. I will continue to spread news about ATI and their drivers and their support community as much as I can, as well as everyone else I know. If I see any Pro-ATI comments anymore, I will add my 2cents.

Johnposted - Feb, 12 2004 - 21:37

Hey Tom... When was the last time Nvidia release a patch to increase its cards performance?... Because ATI just did not 4 hours ago... Now that’s support... Oh I can hear it now, 5900 is so great and so powerful it doesn't need drivers, or support… But watch out you’ll need to tie it down to keep it from blasting off and going orbital... BTW Tom you can't stop me I'm still going to tell every starving orphan I meant to buy ATI. What a dumbass.

There you go "comments from" I'm pretty sure you cut down "tom" with that last commenting way you go man. BTW are you a ATI's clan member as well. In order to protect the name and dignity of ATI's we fans must UNITE and than we will destroy our opponents. Haha.

ATI drivers fix a pile of game bugs - nVidia drivers rarely has to fix such large bugs. They are typically faster performance, tweaked image quality, and support for newer better video cards. Nuff said. TOM YOU RULE! GOOD ON YOU FOR NOT TOLERATING ANY OF THIS KIDDY-SNOT. HX - thanks for leaving these posts... they are interesting to read!

i've been leery of buying a new video card (was leaning towards ATI due to the price range) and after reading reviews of both sides, i think i'll sit out and wait for the next batch of cards. ATI seem to have problems running alot of games, and stability issues NVIDIA didn't even bother to attend the DX9 conference that microsoft help so their DX9 performance is sub-par compared to ATI's honestly, why bother touting either company? they both make money off of you dumbasses every six months when you rush out to buy the next great chipset.

To jeff, since I got rid of my 9700 and went to a 5900 for $80 I really doubt I will have to upgrade it soon. It's simply beautiful. In the past I never knew why nvidia released so many drivers as I usually stuck with one all the time, and again with my 5900 I see no reason to update my driver at all. I got some 30 games installed and all function perfectly. If nvidia dx9 not great, I dont know in what, haven't noticed any graphical problems yet. But I agree with you, wait for PCI Express and remember that game companies will support nvidia as they have for years and years before they start putting out games constantly supported for ATI. I doubt that trend is going to end anytime soon. P.S. I don't buy cards every 6 months. =p and thanks kinda xxxx for your support and from others to that e-mailed me =D

To "Tom" quite your lying lame-butt you can't buy Nvidia latest FX5900 video card for $80 the last time I see it was $499 while on the other hand ATI's latest Radeon 9800 XT is $399 and it affordable for every ATI's fans all over the world. Anyway I'm a fan of Nvidia crap so I don't bother them. ATI's Radeon 9800 XT. On the bottomline ATI's Radeon video cards still rule all over other video cards out there period. I bought it 'used' dingledorf(as was stated before) from a friend and sold mine to him who wanted to overclock it since it's a Saphire with samsung memory. Why I even bothered to respond to your idiotic post when I already stated this before..ogk, now F O and go bug someone else that cares. Thanks.

my dad can beat up your dad!!!!!!!!!! I do have a real question for you video card fans/cheerleaders. If the computers is running at its best performance in those test can the human eye detect the 3-5% difference in the frame rates. I know im getting old and my eyes aren't so good anymore but what about you youngsters. Can your eyes so the difference or are you a slave to the numbers. And as for mike commenting on my work ethics, I wish I could be lazy. my email was for humor i dont want you emailing me asking me out on a date like you did tom.

Tomposted - Feb, 13 2004 - 22:41
8~10fps doesn't make a difference. It's pc configuration, it's driver quality. If your running with 60Hz refresh and you have a 3-5% hit you'll notice. If you are running 90fps and you get a hit you wont notice. Nobody can. Don't forget, TV is ~30fps. When I am running a game like q3 types that are initially locked at 60Hz/60fps, I notice.

Nimnioposted - Feb, 14 2004 - 04:25
I use an Nvidia 5200 series, and it seems to get the job done on any game that's out today. If "Bob" wants to talk about affordability, he should look at Nvidia; the 5200 can be picked up for $69. It's the cheapest 128mb card on the market, and it's DirectX 9.0 compatible. I'm just commenting on affordability, not power, so don't rant about the power difference between the 5200 and faster cards.

Nimnioposted - Feb, 14 2004 - 04:27
Oh, and sorry for not commenting on Silent Storm. It's a great game, but the computer does really take WAY too long to finish it's turn. I kinda hope Nival can do something about that with a patch.

Joe "Master Hacker"posted - Feb, 14 2004 - 16:24
HA! don't make me laugh ATI's Radeons will fixs that problem first before Nvidia even got they foot half-way into the door.

Erbozposted - Feb, 14 2004 - 19:06
Aaaaaargh. Please guys get over it now. nVidia was the king, and now ATI is. Is it that hard to acknowledge what is known by everyone playing games. This day you're better of with an ATI card, and maybe tommorow you'll be better of with an nVidia one, but honnestly who cares, it's games we need, no endless discussions
