Contract J.A.C.K. - Just Another Contract Killer|
(hx) 10:36 AM EST - Dec,07 2003
Contract J.A.C.K. is standalone prequel to Monolith's first person shooter No One Lives Forever 2. The events in the game take place between NOLF and NOLF 2. The game puts you in the role of John Jack, a rugged anti-hero in the services of H.A.R.M. Your occupation is spelled out in the title's acronym: "Just Another Contract Killer." You're recruited by Dmitrij Volkov to investigate an Italian criminal syndicate that seems to be making a play for the big time at H.A.R.M.'s expense.
Contract J.A.C.K features 7 chapters (15 levels in total), that take place primarily in former Czechoslovakia, Italy, and on the moon. A lot of the NOLF 2 weapons are back They added also some new weapons and gadgets like The Bacalov Corrector featured on the retail box, Jack's trademark Desert Eagle pistol and a powerful combat shotgun, In addition, you can expect a couple of new H.A.R.M. enemies, including UNITY agents, Evil Alliance Thugs, and Volkov's arch nemesis, Il Pazzo, and a couple of multiplayer maps with Doomsday, Deathmatch, and Team Deathmatch modes.
I felt rather disappointed when I finished the game. Contract J.A.C.K plays like a straightforward, uninspired first-person shooter. There is no stealth, no lock-picking, no searching dead bodies for ammo, no skill-building, no playing around with nice devices. Basically, you start at Point A, shoot a lot of stupid enemies, and finish at Point B. There aren't any interesting side objectives, and even the vehicles you get to drive (snowmobile and a scooter with big cannons) are very awkward to control. The game doesn't even have anything new in terms of multiplayer.
I understand the shift to a more action oriented title, however the action in
Contract J.A.C.K. simply isn't as good as it was in NOLF 2. The enemy AI is
pretty much non-existent - most enemies tend to run straight at you in
predictable patterns once you're spotted. I'm sure NOLF fans will be pretty
disappointed with it, plus there are plenty of better first-person shooters
available these days. Anyway, you can try
Minimum: Pentium III, 733MHz, 128MB RAM (256 for WinXP), 32MB Direct3D compatible video card with hardware T&L(32-bit color), DirectSound compatible 16-bit sound card, 1.8GB HDD free, 56k Modem or LAN for multiplayer games*
Recommended: 1 GHz Pentium III or equivalent, 256MB RAM, 64MB Direct3D compatible video card with hardware T&L(32-bit color) DirectSound compatible 16-bit sound card that supports EAX 2.0, 1.8GB HDD free, Broadband Internet connection or LAN for multiplayer*
*Please note that in order to host or join a multiplayer game, your computer should meet or exceed the recommended system requirements.
snd: 3/5 - mediocre, weapon sounds are fairly good, Czech soldiers have a very strong Russian accent when they speak wtf :),
gfx: 3/5 -
farily good, the same engine like NOLF2, blocky and uninteresting environments
playability: 3/5 -
mediocre shootfest, level-building tools, enemy AI is pretty much non-existent, unpolished, incredibly linear, unnecessarily easy, no good story, vehicles are awkward to control

|It's a fun shootem' up. Not quite so clever as NOLF, but not to many games are. Inexpensive game and good mindless shooting with the NOLF feel. Good have been longer game though.|

|Seems a complete waste for Monolith to allow someone to use the branding they've built in the NOLF titles to put out such a crappy game. Just makes you wonder what people will do for money if these guys are so willing to trade gamer trust for a quick buck. Well, I guess it just goes to show us gamers how little the industry cares about our business as paying customers...in return, I will treat them accordingly.|

|NOLF is better, this game is mediocre at best/|

|CrazySpoon's right. Everything's for sale in the land of the sequel, and the gamer is the last consideration.|

|Just a game like the others... walking around like rambo and killing people. I see no reason to play it.
Can someone create a big massivly multiplayer strategy game please? Someone should combine games.
A commander who gives orders to the players (other humans). He see everthing like in a strategic game (like starcraft or warcraft).
And the players on bottom drive tanks, fly aircrafts (like battlefield).
Single player is out...|

if somebody is interested in a RTSS so try out natural selection (ns). Official Page: http://www.natural-selection.org
this is a mod based like cs on half life. yeah its right, a RTSS with half life engine! i play the game nearly 6 months and i cant get enough. you should really try it out! hf^^|

|I am stuck at the moon trying to find Dr. Harji. I can`t open an airlocked door.. Do any of you know how???|

|It's great to see such insight and thoughts on the game and understanding of the English language as FY has, especiay for one who uses AOL, what next a WEB TV user ???
If you are stuck on the moon, look for a can of compressed air to put in the door lock.
This game is not terrible, it's not super terrific either, lot's of mindless shooting and mayhem ... I mean after all it is a shooter and half the fun is blasting away bad guys and a shooter game that has a great shotgun, tommy gun, laser and crossbow can't be too bad.|

|This game has the 'most' overlooked engine. Graphically one of the best. AvP 2 also showed off aspects of the engine. Sad to see there aren't any good developers to put out games with it. Guess Quake3 crap is all they can do.|
