Heaven & Hell (hx) 06:06 AM EDT - Sep,13 2003
Heaven & Hell is a strategy game in the same vein as Populous or Black&White. You play the role of an omniscient and all-powerful deity trying to convert followers to your side by impressing or intimidating the local population. You must use all of your powers and a strong faith in order to win over people and make them believe in you.
Heaven & Hell contains two different campaigns allowing you to play good or evil God. Each of the campaigns tells a story about the relationship between the prophets and their god, as well as between the prophets. An overall story spans across both campaigns throwing new light on the perception of "good" and "evil." Both good and evil sides feature seven miracles and catastrophes (rainbows, angels, demons, lightning, earthquakes, floods and plagues of locusts and frogs) that can be used to encourage local believers, or to sway any non-believers to the one true faith. There are two important factors in the game: Mana (divine energy, created by believe) and Karma (a good or evil influence affecting every inhabitant, drawing him to the Good or Evil side). Instead of caring for economy and creating new inhabitants, you use the Mana to influence the Karma of the world to gain new believers that again provide new Mana. If you are good, things get even merrier, flowers grow, people get a springy bounce in their walk, things get more colorful. If you are evil, the vegetation withers, people start sulking, the world gets darker. Sadly both sides are functionally equivalent. In other words, both sides are carbon copies of each other. There are four different kinds of people in the game: farmers, nomads, miners and townsmen. They differ in the way that they can be convinced to your faith. Some are easier impressed by miracles, some can be easily seduced, some respond well to preaching, some might need a little force as motivation. The typical goals are eliminating a certain enemy prophet, turning certain groups of the inhabitants over to your faith (so you can convert them to your side by using the main prophet), protecting certain buildings or units and gain enough Mana to work a certain miracle. Don't expect anything else.
Despite thinking Heaven & Hell is a good game, it disappointed me and I'd be
less than honest if I didn't say so. After 10 hours of playing its all
been seen and done. Sadly, the game gets extremely boring very fast. Save your
money. If you're thinking of buying this game, I strongly recommend you to try
the demo
(102MB) first.
System Requirements: Intel Pentium II 300 MHz; 64 MB RAM, graphic card with 8 MB RAM, DirectX compatible sound card, 4X CD-ROM drive, 1-8 players
snd: 2/5 - background music is pretty good, but only a few nice sounds gfx: 3/5 -
cute graphics ~ cartoon-like world, day and night settings, some graphical glitches playability: 2/5 -
hard + it gets extremely boring fast, friendly interface, random mission generator, multiplayer up to 8 players, boring Skirmish mode

So they decided to release this and kill off IG3 when it was a month or so to completion. I personally think there would be more people out there interested in IG3 than this game which from many reviews that I have read has not came out well. I played the demo of IG3 months ago and thought it was excellent and couldn`t wait for it to come out. It just shows the mentality of some companies. |

But it can be used for short entertainment. And you all have to admit, you've always wanted to play god at one point or another. |
