Chaser
(hx) 01:00 AM EDT - Aug,17 2003

Chaser is sci-fi first person shooter developed by Slovakian developer Cauldron (Quadrax, Spellcross, Battle Isle: The Andosia War). As in many sci-fi games, the future doesn't look too bright. "Chaser is set on Mars, 2044. The UN establishes MARSCORP (Martian Security and Economics Committee) under the leadership of Samuel Longwood. In the years that follow, the UN gradually loses control of MARSCORP, mainly due to the non-transparent licence policy of its director. Samuel Longwood uses his autonomous status to create vassal relations between the corporations and MARSCORP. The unshakable power position of MARSCORP is supported by the companies and thus they acquire additional rights and licenses. Samuel Longwood and his consortium become extremely wealthy from this arrangement. However, dissenting voices in MARSCORP begin to challenge Samuel Longwood's authoritarian policy. They demand the dismissal of Samuel Longwood as director and a complete redistribution of the mining rights. But Samuel Longwood keeps an ace up his sleeve for occasions like this".

Playing as the here Chaser, you awake on board the spaceship H.M.S. Majestic. You doesn't know who are you, what you are doing here, why you are being sought by men in black uniforms and what they will do to you when they find you From this point, you jump right into the action, trying to avoid or blast enemy troops and escape from the station before it explodes. Well, the idea of you suffering from amnesia has been chucked around quite a bit in the game industry (I still remember Sanitarium or upcoming XIII), but despite this clich, Chaser's story is really integral to the game.

Chaser features over 30 locations with 30 different types of enemies (roughly 20 hours of gameplay), over 20 well modelled weapons and almost all of them are derived from real weapons including SIG Sauer P225 (9mm semi-automatic), Beretta M12, Calico MX 950, Ingram M10 sub-machine gun, H&K G11 Assault Rifle, FAMAS Assault Rifle, GDL2B (60mm calibre mortar), TAFF20 (four-barreled canon), Colt Commando, and multiplayer support via GameSpy as well as dedicated servers (up to 64 players) - there are DM, TDM, CTF modes and also Counter-Strike like mode called "Shock Troops in which the players from two opposing groups have to accomplish a number of objectives in a set time.

What about gameplay? It's decent fun, but nothing that you haven't seen before in the swarms of other first-person shooters out there. You basically just run around and shooting whoever is in your way and there are only a few stealth missions. The first couple of levels are somewhat linear and pretty boring, but as you progress, the game gets more involving and the missions become more interesting. To make gameplay a bit more juicy, Cauldron have added "Adrenaline Mode" into the game. It's basically just another name for bullet-time mode mode, which you can activate to slow things down and help you aim and dodge bullets better. It's sometime really useful. If you are jumping out on a load of bad guys, you can get your aim on someone's head and start shooting, before they even notice. It does help, if you know when to use it.

Chaser is quite hard to rate. I'd say that Chaser is fairly entertaining game with a good plot, some fun and excellent for 56kers in multiplayer, but doesn't show us anything we haven't already seen before. Try playable demos (SP Demo (150MB) | MP Demo (142MB) and decide yourself. Chaser is currently available in United Kingdom, Scandinavia, Benelux and Australia. The release date for US: August, 19th 2003.

System Requirements: Intel Pentium III 650 MHz or compatible, 3D graphic card with 32 MB RAM, 128 MB RAM, 1,35 GB HDD space

snd: 3/5 - good, impressive music, weapons are pretty cool but none of them sound very good, voice acting could be better done (John Chaser, is probably the most poorly acted)
gfx: 3/5 - mostly pretty good, Cloak NT game engine, some nice effects (you can shoot through windows and shatter them, water effect, snowing, raining...), a few clipping issues
playability: 4/5 - suprisingly good though the first levels are boring, strictly linear, involving storyline, Adrenaline Mode (bullet-time-with-another-name), roughly 20 hours of gameplay, mediocre AI, multiplayer support up to 64 players + Counter-Strile like Shock Troops mode, some bugs (ATI)
genre: sci-fi FPS
release: June 2003 (EU)
developer: Cauldron
publisher: JoWood
Good
Overall: 70%

As far as looks there is only one other engine out that beats the high level grapics here, Unreal. If I had to complain about it it would be the respawning enemies and the ending, that said thou this is a great game, and it comes form Solvinia (sp), designed apparently to have per pixel shading, but which todays sysems cant seem to handle. http://www.ownt.com/the_views/interviews/2003/chaser/chaser.shtm Has something form all thew most popular FPS and does a good job putting them all in one game. First half of the game the story is strong. These are some of the hugest levels if not the hugest ever in a game (major atomisphere), these size levels would bring Quake engine to its knees. The PC market has sucked for the last year or 2 cause Micosoft has been throwing money at the good Dev's to make Xbox games, and thankfully Europe and the east have been taking up the slack :)

This game is very poor. I hope (and bet) that the developers have all committed suicide by now. So bad, oh my god. Are the developers of this game blind, deaf quadrapaledgic mutes? I swear to god, a 12 year old retarded kid with dual oxygen pumps on his wheelchair could make a better game. Jesus christ, what were they thinking?? This: Developer1: Lets make a game that rips off soldier of fortune 2! But, instead of improving upon it, lets make it completely shittier by using a graphics engine originally placed into a 1986 frogger machine! Developer2: Ok! If you have a mind (void all Jowood employees) you wont buy this game.

Great level design, decent weapons, good AI. After a while it bogs down in repetitive play, but overall it's one of the better recent shooters. These Slovakian developers deserve every success.

The underwater level was so fuckin lame but it was a decent immersive/cinematic FPS (although generic) up until then when i stopped playing it.

This game got the rating it deserves, a 70% seems about right. Its, nothing more then a sci-fi FPS. I personally like the Multiplayer mode, but only if you ignore the extensive errors and gitches you seem to get. The single player is okay, but it gets boring preety quicky. I do appreciate decent AI. Altough, My computer hella lags on All FPS so, my opinion isnt all that good. Download Demo. It has Multiplayer, sing on and give a try.

This is a nice game, good graphics and great atmospheric sounds. Perhaps not an original game, but good entertainment. With settings on high and a P4 2.5/GeForce 4 4200, this game speeds along. Basically, this game is FUN.

I find the engine extremely boring. Empty for being precise. The whole game tries to act professional, but in some ways I doesn't get there. My score for Chaser : 56%

not as good as DOOM 3, or HL2. that's what you ppl mean. But as a foreign game, on the FPS route, it's very good. Don't compare games. DOOM 3 and HL2 with make all other games look crappy we all know that. But Chaser it a great game, and this only the demo i've played, therefore it can only get better. (i hope) Great job guys. looking for a better game from oversea? check out FARCRY.

This game's graphic engine is very cool.. It requires no recent expensive graphic card. I can play Chaser with my RADEON 7200!! superb!! but finding all the routes in this game is so hard to play. it's a big maze! but this is a well-made game. try once more!

WHAT THE FUCK WERE THEY THINKING WHEN DESIGNING THE UNDERWATER SHIT ??? I liked the game up until the submarine moronic thing. Nice graphics, great story (nothing novel but given effectively).

Jakeposted - Sep, 28 2003 - 01:13
WHY? WHY? Did they make that underwater level? It was a good game up until then. Now I hate it.

Brightposted - Oct, 03 2003 - 22:14
stfu n00bs this game rocks. it fucks every single fps that was out for the last 2 years... you damn dumb ass-faced baboonz... indeed, the underwater level was something annoying... so?? every game has it weaknesses. the game is *really* long, the gameplay is *great* (except those fucking crouched-jump), weapons are darn cool, musics are nice, level design is one of the better i've *ever* seen you damn' bastards! the story is intersting enough, and... shit you f00lz! 90% if you do not agree, hang yourself on by the ballz

Good game, I got the full version and its a difficult game. Good its abotu time you accually had to work at a game in order to beat it. Bunch of sissy lala's! (Something to play pre-Doom III)

Gappaposted - Oct, 17 2003 - 12:23
I've just started playing this game - it looks promising, but I think that the story is, as said in the review, a bit clich. Right now I'm at the Watergate level. The graphics are nice and the engine is also fast. The sound is crappy - the guns sound too lame...like spring operated ones :o) But overally taken, it's not bad, I can say It's good. My personal rating 65-75% (something between it..I'm leaving space for myself to revise the rating :o)))))

Ulmoposted - Nov, 06 2003 - 09:19
Very nice graphics and does not require top level cards, I have a TI4200/64 Mb and the game runs quite well. Decent AI. The storyline is just too much inspired by Total Recall. Huge levels, sometimes interesting, sometimes boring. The underwater level is horrible, I skipped it w/out regrets. Regrets for the Mars airport, very funny level but you must run and you cannot enjoy all the details. Lots of quotation from the Alien movie series: the military trucks (from Alien 1), the Mars prisons (from Alien 3). Lots of weapons but almost equivalent, you end up using only the attack rifle. The game has shadows and very good light reflections, but this is embarassing since there's no way to hide in the shadows nor you can see yourself reflected in water, steel or glasses. Some bugs such as dropping in the nothing between two wireframes.
