Neighbours From Hell
(hx) 07:00 AM CEST - Aug,08 2003

Do you remeber the game Spy Vs Spy? I first played First Star' Spy vs Spy on my Atari 800XL computer when I was about 15 years old. It was and still is a very good multi-play game. For those of you who've never heard of this game or seen Atari, one of the most unique features of Spy vs. Spy was an unique solution called Simulvision. This splits the screen in half, so that the activities of White can be seen in the top half, and Black in the bottom, allowing each player to see what the other is up to. When a player enters a room already occupied, the action shifts to one half of the screen for a winner-take-all brawl.

I would say that Neighbours from Hell is pretty similar to Spy Vs Spy classic, although it's not exactly the same game. You control Woody; the super trickster who loves to put one over on his bad tempered neighbour Joe. The game is basically a TV show and the idea is to push up the ratings by playing tricks and laying traps for grumpy neighbour causing hysterics for the audience and despair for your neighbour. Needless to say Joe is the kind of obnoxious, cruel, noisy, bad-smelling jackass that you only find on TV. Each episode is time limited and there are a certain number of tricks to be performed. Your score is measured in ratings, and you'll have to achieve a certain rating level to avoid being cancelled. For example, there is a level called "Birthday Surprise", where the neighbour continually celebrates his birthday with a cake upstairs, and checks his mailbox for birthday cards downstairs. You must set the tricks up at the right time and hide where necessary, so in this case, you could put a mousetrap in the mailbox while the neighbour is busy upstairs.

This is a great game, funny and very good playable. Unfortunately, Neighbours from Hell features contains _only_ 14 episodes. Which means that you will finish the game in 5 hours (maybe less), and it's over. There's no multiplayer, no editor (even planned in future), nothing else. I bet those who will buy it, will beat it and take it back in the same day. Yeah, I would like to recommend this awesome game, but It's just too short and is not worth the 30 bucks. They should sell the game for $9.99 or something. Well, it depends how much money you can spend :) Needless to say that the same game with more episodes, level editor, and some multiplayer support would be bomb with overall rating +90%. As I mentioned, there are currently no official patches of any sort and the developers even don't plan to make one any time soon. It seems we will have to wait for Neighbours From Hell 2. Download a playable demo (20MB).

snd: 3/5 - good, fairly repetitive music, a few voices

A good bit of fun. No resolution changes, a real 'Wallace and Grommit' feel and that kind of whackyness usually associated with the old Bullfrog "Theme" games. Too bad you can't get it in Australia.
