Midnight Club II (hx) 01:00 AM EDT - Aug,05 2003
Midnight Club II is an arcade racing game that immerses you to the dark underworld of illegal street racing. The game sees you start out your career racing through the streets of Los Angeles, Paris, and eventually Tokyo, Japan. You find yourself entering this notorious racing scene, a scene with no rules and no set routes. Since there are no set tracks, part of the challenge is finding the fastest route through the cities. Use whatever routes, shortcuts and driving methods necessary to hit the checkpoints and arrive at the finish line before your opponent has a chance. Winner takes the title to the loser's car. Luckily this is a game and you can hit the retry button.
Midnight Club II features a reasonably lengthy single-player career mode (you have to play this to unlock new cars and tracks which are locked in other modes), an arcade battle modes (you can only access cars, races, and cities that you've opened up in the career mode), and an addictive multiplayer mode (LAN/Internet) for up 8 players, which let you play in either a standard sort of capture the flag game or a bomb-oriented variant called detonate. There are 28 cars for you to choose from (muscle cars, hot rods, rally cars end even motorcycles), all of which you'll earn by winning races. The cars, unfortunately, are not licensed, which leaves them looking a touch generic at times, especially the early vehicles. Fortunately there are also plenty of fictional ones on offer and each handles very differently. All of the cars here are designed for high-speed action, so there are come with a limited supply of nitrous oxide for a short boost of rocket-like speed, which can also be gained by drafting behind other racers and then speeding around them. The vehicles handle well, there is a handbrake, burnouts, weight shifting, and nitrous. The controls are responsive, and the general arrangement (gas, brake, nitrous) feels quite natural, the cars feel solid and handle like they have actual mass and weight (of course in terms of arcade gameplay).
Although the single-player missions are a lot of fun, they become extremely tough soon. So that you will have to replay a race several times before finding the right path to first place. This may lead to some frustrating moments of repeating a course several times until your skill becomes greater than those around you, but as you become familiar with each city, you will find that the "impossible" may actually be easier than you think with the help of some well placed shortcuts. Handling for the cars (and motorcycles) in Midnight Club II is well done. The controls, either the keyboard or the wheel, are crisp and respond as they should. Using a steering wheel with the game increases the gameplay further, although it's quite good playable with keyboard too.
Overall, Midnight Club II is one of the best racing game I've played in
months. If you're looking for a new arcade racing game for your game collection
you should definitely consider picking up Midnight Club II. ($40). Download

snd: 3/5 - good, engine sounds blend nicely with the environment, very mediocre voice-acting, an extensive soundtrack of techno, hip-hop, and trance music, as well as the option to add your own MP3s, annoying radio chatter gfx: 3/5 -
looks sharp, cities are nice and large, sensation of speed with detailed road textures, car models look good, lack of brightness control playability: 5/5 -
pure arcade racing, totally addictive, solid AI, multiplayer support (LAN/Internet) for up 8 players (CTF, Detonator modes), Race Editor, clumsy&illogical menu, some races can get extremely frustrating
genre: arcade street racing release: June 2003 developer: Rockstar Sand Diego the game is similar to: Midtown Madness publisher: Take 2

| agen@annwn.vc | posted - Aug, 05 2003 - 10:20 | Itīs a nice game, but as he said, itīts pretty nerving to drive every race XY times before one can win it. And i realy hated the city of paris. Only one race was of my likening. Needed 2 beers extra to get the turns natural.
To the Motorcycle problem: Motorcycles make much larger turns then a car with good handling values. Pick one with a good handling score and you will win, cause the first few checkpoints are all close turns. |

| posted - Aug, 05 2003 - 19:59 | Multiplayer mops up. You and a bunch of mates running quarter miles or aqueduct runs in LA is just too much fun.
Trainer for unlimited NoS also works in Multiplayer! No need to restart cruise mode! |

| slo@DOT.COM | posted - Aug, 05 2003 - 22:20 | Hey guys I'm not sure if you peoples know this but I'm looking to buy this game called "Jagged Alliance 2: Urban Chaos". It was made by a group o peoples from "planetjaggedalliance.com" who's well known for their hacking skills and mods abilities. I'm a HUGE fan of JA2 series and I'm dying to buy this one BUT can't find it anywhere. It is says that it will be release on May 2003 to a pc near you. If any of you peoples know any clue or store that might sell this please post your commenting after this. Well now I don't want any LIES or pretenders or spams. Your help would be appreciate it. Thanks.

Good and addictive for a while but loses its value. Maybe they could have changed some things in cruise mode (eg. impromptu drags against other racers who r also cruising). Will be looking forward to NFS:Underground, hopefully it'LL ass kick. |

| posted - Aug, 06 2003 - 13:37 | the AI is stupid. all you have to do is get on the free way for capture the flag and then you will score every time. the ai computers don't follow you on the free way. |

| one@none.cpu | posted - Aug, 12 2003 - 12:06 | I've tried the latest NFS of the whole bunch, and I can't say else that NFS is just a lot of "packed air". It's sub-par on all domains, and I don't get the comparison between NFS and MC2, sorry. |
|
| slow@anywhere.com | posted - Aug, 13 2003 - 14:25 | This game beats the NfS-series hands tied behind the back. Multiplayer is a rush once the Noobs are cleared out.
Single play has just about the right learnig curve and finishing the career tells you one thing:"You know how to drive!!!" |
|
| eahyouslow | posted - Aug, 16 2003 - 11:34 | umm no its a game dumbass finishing the career does not mean you know how to drive. |

| izzSmacka@yahoo.com | posted - Aug, 16 2003 - 19:34 | I rate MC2 up with Burnout 2. |
|
| Ray | posted - Aug, 17 2003 - 23:02 | The game is fun as hell. With the people on the streets diving out of the way,the big air jumps, ramps, freeway, and quite a few other things,it reminds me of Midtown Madness 2 with Nitro and way better graphics. I think that NFS:Underground will be equally fun with 10 times better graphics.EA needs to puts more time into the multiplayer. Hot Pursuit 2 sucked badly internet wise. But,EA will take full advantage of DirectX 9 and all the new shaders which will make the game beautiful. And with real licensed cars, fully customizable everything,Underground will dominate street racing games. Anyway,MCII is hot! Go download it or pretty much any game you want from here http://www.bytemonsoon.net/ or here http://www.suprnova.org/ You will need Bit Torrent to get any of the games from the sites, and it's well worth it!! Get Bit Torrent here http://ei.kefro.st/projects/btclient/ There are many Bit Torrent versions available, you just need to search google. |

| Big Yellow Monkey | posted - Sep, 13 2003 - 03:38 | Hahahaha slow or 2slow or whatever it is... you homo. If you've ever driven a real car, or a real vehicle at all, you'd know that it's nothing like video games. There's a little more to it in real life.
But I guess it's tough to drive when you're 13 years old sitting in front of a computer screen all day, isn't it?
Homo.
