Big Mutha Truckers
(hx) 01:00 AM EDT - Jul,17 2003

Big Mutha Truckers is an arcade game that puts you behind the wheel of 20-ton, 60-foot-long big rigs as they cruise coast to coast and everywhere in between. You drive a semi-truck from town to town, picking up loads, and delivering them to other towns. You get challenged to races from other truckers. The goal is to make the most money in a 60 day period. There are some other goals in the game, but this is your main deal.

The idea of the game is that there is an elderly lady (known as Ma) who owns a highly successful trucking business in the USA, but sadly, age has taken its toll and so she decides to give the business to one of five lucky truckers. As one of Ma Jackson's four kids, its up to you to take your rig out on the road and make as much cash as possible - by any means possible - in sixty days. Beat your siblings and Ma will hand over the reins of the business to you. You make cash by trading various commodities in the five cities that make up Hick State County, by taking on special jobs (some legal, some not so legal), by wagering with other rival drivers and by causing as much chaos as possible! Sadly there are no traffic cops. You can just run rampant down the highway without any penalties from the law. You can run cars off the road, hit pedestrians, drive on the wrong side of the road, and all with a police car passing by, you can even hit a police car and nothing happens.

Each city has a great and individual look to it from the towering sky scrapers of Capital city to the bright neon lights of Greenback. There's no one way of getting to each place, its just you and the open road which you are free to roam, but you must watch your fuel and damage meters. Buy, sell, repair and refuel at cities then off for another day for more of the same. There is also a mission based mode which pits you in a variety of scenarios. For example, you have to drive through town, knocking over all the newspaper stands along the way. You'll be racing against a countdown timer, but each newspaper stand you destroy will award you with bonus time.

Big Mutha Truckers features four unique characters (Bobbie Sue, Cletus, Earl and Rawkus), each with their own personalities, driving styles and attributes, an arcade driving model with only three gears: high, low, and reverse, multiple types of upgrades to choose from, including fuel savers, better air brakes, bigger cargo holds, better shock absorbers, louder horns, and a rather large spoiler, many hidden bonuses and extras for players to uncover; and five different radio stations in the game, including country, rock, talk, and two dance stations.

Overall, Big Mutha Truckers is fairly interesting arcade racing game with some nice ideas. Unfortunately, repetitive game play and difficulties with the truck control brings it back to average overall score. For information try this playable demo (147MB) and visit the official homepage.

Minimum system requirements:
Pentium III processor 500MHz (700MHz or above recommended), 96 MB of RAM (128MB or above recommended), 4x CD-ROM, 16MB DirectX 8.1 compatible 3D Hardware Accelerator (32MB recommended), 16-bit DirectX 8.1 compatible sound card, 985 MB free HDD Space

snd: 2/5 - unimpressive, music gets irritating extremely fast, lame voice-overs
gfx: 3/5 - mediocre, both trucks and backgrounds look pretty good, CPU cars look very cheap, badly rendered character models
playability: 3/5 - average arcade racing, easy controls, mission based mode, kinda repetitive, no mutiplayer, almost impossible to control the truck with keyboard
genre: arcade racing
platform: PC (released also for the Xbox, PS2)
release: May 2003
developer: Eutechnyx
the game is similar to: 18 Wheeler American Pro Trucker (DC)
publisher: Empire Interactive
Good
Overall: 50%

I wouldn't have any interest this kind of game because all you get is 20-ton, 60-foot-long big rigs going from city to city pick loads and drop-it off. If there's options where you could run-over ped, it be cool. But I'm not going waste my hot-burning cash on this DRIVING and PICK-UP STUFF game what a boring. I'm already sick of a real life driving to work every day if that's not enough.

adwa: Have you ever tried to grab screenshots from driving game? I doubt it very much :) Of course, I played&reviewed this game without cheats. I only played with cheats when I needed to grab some nice looking shots. That's all.

The cops only start to take notice of you after 7 days, this gives you a chance to learn the ins and outs of the trading, you also don't mention the bikers, who, once annoyed will try to hijack your load and will open fire on your truck, did you just try the first couple of days or did you actually play through the game to completion before basing your review score. It sounds to me like you didn't finish the game at all.

It woulda been nice if the truck driver have a FULLY-AUTO AK-47, complete with a 30rds mag to protect himself from those rotten dirty bastard a** hells-angels from trying to hijacking his loads. It will bring back memory of north-hollywood shotouts. Hahahaha[cough]

I think 50% is pretty fair score for this mediocre game.

Mike "Spy" Rosenbumposted - Jul, 18 2003 - 13:01
Yeahh! I agree "AK-47!" I woulda been nice if you could run-over peds, drive-by-shooting and may be have small amount of weapons arsenal in hands. Just imagine when a bikers try to hijack your loads and you JUICE his ass with your AR15,AK-47,RPK-74,H&K21, just to name a few, in a fully-AUTOMATIC MODE!! and watch that bikers bitches torn into pieces. RATATATATA!!!!oooh yeahh.

the developer must have giving up waiting for sales; the other products i've tried wern't worth buying either. They posted "cheats" on their web site that not only didn't work but you couldn't even enter- they write for ps2 and half way port to other platforms. ed2k://|file|Big.Mutha.Truckers.iso|738263040|598C1C71CB3F22B660D67A4F710702FC|/ I wonder what that means....

your a fucking loser cause you use cheats. thats all i can really say. If the cheats don't work in a game then i would say thats great. I like it when you losers can't cheat. Games which resist cheating are better than games that don't. does this one? well i have no clue. If your going to cheat to adjust your character, truck, whatever. why stop there? just edit the game so you get the winning screen everytime. THEN ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS LOAD THE GAME AND YOU WIN!. wooo you so great know! you a fucking god! you don't even have to PLAY THE GAME!

At first when playing this game I thought "how week, alls you do is race from city to city, dropping and picking up what the person at the bar tells you to do". Then I realized by doing that, I was millions of dollars behind the lead. This game is being misrepresented, it's not a racing game at all. Frankly if that's what you're expecting then I can see why so many people are disappointed. Anyone ever played Drug Lord or Dope Wars or any of the clones? Yeah, this game is exactly like that, only you actually get to drive yourself from city to city. And you're selling legal stuff instead of drugs. The game is actually in trying to get the right product, and make a profit off of it (which, by the way, you won't do by selling what the person at the bar tells you to.) You need to constantly check all other products, and follow the big news to where profits are high, again just like drug lord. Think of the game that way and it will completely change your outlook. Also, as I said before, this is anything BUT a racing game. You actually want to make it from point A to B with the least amount damage possible, fixing your car costs money! And after a month you'll need millions of dollars (either 100 million, or 1 bil - I forget which) to be in contention against your first place sibling. My this game? 4 out of 5. Good concept, albeit copied somewhat. The radio is cool the first 5 minutes then gets really repetitive. Again, copied a la grand theft auto. But, requires some thought, and isn't as easy as it looks. It's a good renter.

YES GOOD POINT THERE MOL ITS DEFINATELY NOT A RACING GAME.

Spaceposted - Aug, 27 2003 - 12:50
Great point Moll. I thought this game was fun anyway (maybe I'm a redneck), but when I realized what you need to do to win it added a whole new level of challenge. You definitely can't win by going through the motions. People should give this game a chance, because a sequel with some added abilities and a larger map could be one of the best games ever. Think of this as comparable to the original Grand Theft Auto.

Anyone know why this game won't play on a machine with a radeon 9600 series card? Says 'no 3D hardware'. Danka.
